WKU defended run/pass based on Fluker's posture.

My next thought is whether a sports writer will be gutsy enough to ask Coach Saban about it today... I don't think I could do it, even if it is a legitimate issue/question.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone did. Granted, the person must have some guts to ask the question, but the question is legitimate. CNS doesn't like the absurd questions. Like Scott Griffin and Scarbinsky said last week, some guys ask questions because "It's a press conference, so I have to ask a question."

Do we simply coach DJ back to the correct stance for the play?
Or do we get tricky and use it to fool defenses?

You correct the stance and move on. The situation itself is not complex and it will be taken care of before we line up and play Saturday, guaranteed!

Lets see... WKU knew pretty much when we would run or pass and two of our defensive starters didn't play and we still beat them by a score of 35-0. I feel much better now. I will feel much better when I hear some good news about Jalston.

The number 1 team in the country defeating WESTERN KENTUCKY 35-0 is nothing to go home and write about. Go back and look at the predictions many on here had for the game...

Alabama looked flat from an offensive line standpoint most of the game. They allowed too many sacks and pressure against the pass on AJ and the run was stagnant to say the least.

Is it the end of the world? No! But there is definite room for improvement. The trophy is not handed to the team that comes out the gate the strongest each year. Typically it is handed to the team that continues to get better week to week. If Alabama is happy with what happened against Michigan and complacency sets in, we can go ahead and forget about #15 this year. Do I believe that is what is going to happen? NO! I believe the coaches will make the correct adjustments and that there is enough leadership on the team that will squash any ideas of complacency. But to sit here and think that we should overlook the Western Kentucky game and think that we dominated it because we won 35-0 is pure silly.

This is one of the reasons I was glad Alabama worked on the passing game a bit. These linemen won't be great at pass blocking if they never do it. AJ will have to win a game with his arm before the season is out and he needs pass protection to do it.

I agree. I went back and re-watched the game and it seemed the objective was to pass the ball. I think we need to remember. With the development of McCarron last season and with the comments made by CNS this off season. All indications were more of the offense was going to be put on McCarron's arm, and all of this was BEFORE the Fowler injury (seeing it was in the offseason these comments were made). Which means we were/are going to pass more. So none of this should come as a surprise to us.

Well, knowing that little "secret" didn't help them *that* much, especially in the passing area. 35-0?
6 sacks and they were pretty effective against Alabama's run game...

I honestly think it explains a lot. Also, I'm going to be cheering for WKU. If they were coached by a guy like Urban Meyer, the coaches would have kept that to themselves and may be told any coaching buddies playing Alabama.

I'm not one for over-thinking this one. 'Tells' are as much a part of football as they are boxing or poker. Good coaching corrects them, and I'm sure our staff will address this one. I'm not trying to be dismissive, but given that DJF came to 'Bama fairly raw to the position, this is the sort of problem I would expect. This might be a tough practice week for the big man, though.

That what I was wondering, if this is a complicated fix.
My first thought was: Wow! If DJ's been doing this for years can we correct it in one week?
But I don't know much about the facets of blocking.

IMO. If Nuss and Stoutland hadn't picked up on it prior to the WKU coaches they did when breaking down the game film. And yes, the primary game plan was probably pass first in this game. We have a good stable of RB's, as usual, but the receiver talent is deeper and broader than ever before. And we have a QB who is proven capable of getting it to them. Will the run/pass ratio change with Jalston out of the line-up? Probably, but this coaching staff and O-Line will adapt accordingly.

I have faith in this team and staff. It's great to be a TideFan!

RTR!!!

AJ won't throw the ball away; several of those sacks were not on the o-line, he had plenty of time but couldn't find anyone open. He has seldom, if ever, "thrown the ball away". In all honesty, he hasn't needed to a whole lot.

Agree, this is actually a really good question about football, not about rankings, or who can expect to see the field in the 4th quarter when the game is in hand, or any other fluff. I think Saban would welcome actual football questions.

IF this is true, there's gonna be an unhappy GA on the Alabama staff. Gene Stallings got his job at Alabama under Bryant by scouting his Tex A&M team like an opposing staff would and then having the guts to tell coach all the flaws.

I HOPE it was a GA's job to spot these things. I hope it was SOMEBODY'S job.

Thanks to the WKU coach for pointing this out. If someone here has the tape, please let us know if it's true. 6 sacks kind of make this one more "real" than not.
I'm sure our coaching staff will get on it immediately and get it fixed. However, I remember the ESPNU episode when CJ Mosley and Nico Johnson are explaining some similar stuff. Maybe this is kind of common for the OLs at this level. Maybe it's what separates great OL and good OL.
I hope this is not just a tip of the iceberg. The WKU coach kind of give out a methodology of studying and game planning. What are their other findings?

I wish I could say that the tipoff was the reason for the sacks, and it may have helped them on blitzes, but at least three - two on DJ and one on CyKo - were because they weren't moving their feet fast enough. On the first sack given up by DJ, he flat didn't see the DE. He was looking downfield for someone else to block. By the time he saw the DE, the guy had a full head of steam and just ran around him. Foot position had nothing to do with that. Probably the tipoff helped them more on the run game than the passing...

bingo....let's the LB or S slide down

Another concern with pass blocking, especially with Fowler gone, is the play of the RBs. It had to be expected that there would be a drop-off in that area after Ingram and Richardson, but Yeldon sometimes looks lost back there trying to block. Hopefully he'll learn on the job quickly, because his other skills are top-notch.

Knowing that a particular play is a pass play gives the defensive ends a slight advantage. They do not have to think about containment - they just pin their ears back. That said, if the O-Line anticipates this (as they should), it should be able to make adjustments and compensate for the rush itself.

Where you see a greater advantage is in linebacker and safety play. They know that they do not need to defend the run, so they are in better position to defend the pass. Could explain why your receivers were so well covered on so many plays (forcing AJ to eat the ball).
