Wondering what we'll do if we get spurned by Saban...

I have a sinking feeling we're not gonna offer RR while we wait on someone else (saban), then Saban declines, and in the meantime RR re-ups with WVU and talks about how he just couldn't leave home, how happy he is at WVU, etc...

I feel like I've seen this movie before. Please get it right this time Mal.

I'm going with the "A blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile" hope.

DISCLAIMER-not to be confused with the "A blind squirrel finds a Nutt every once in awhile" hope.

Re: Does MM know what he's doing?

Good question . If he screws around with Saban and loses CRR , he should get canned immediately .

Re: Does MM know what he's doing?

I can promise that CMM knows a whole lot more about what he's doing than I know or than you know.

:BigA:
I guess the question is whether he is competent at this whole "coaching search" thing by now, or are we about to be left twisting in the wind (again) due to indecision. After this many bungled searches, I think it's a legit question.

I'll say Yes he knows what he's doing, and No we haven't a clue what he's doing.

Coach Rod can win here, I really believe it. Let's go get him.

Re: Does MM know what he's doing?

If MM has gotten some pretty positive vibes from Saban and he ignores them and let's RR rush him into offering him, IMO this would be a worse move than trying to string RR along while waiting on Saban. If we did throw money at RR and he came in and underachieved for 3-4 yrs, then we would be right back in the same boat as we are right now. We would be looking for another coach, paying out some absurd severance package and blaming MM for not waiting on Saban.

MM could get hammered either way.

I have liked the way this search has been handled so far. We have not rushed into anything and seem to be examing all options. We do not have to rush into anything and we should not want to settle. Doesn't everyone remember everything being said last week when Spurrier was a sure thing?

IMO, we have the A-list which is S, S and well S. There is a big drop to the B-list which is RR and possibly BP but not as much seperation to the B-list that would include PJ and Grobe. These are just the candidates we know about. There are still other capable names out there.

I know everyone is getting antsy but we need to let MM do his job so that we will have the least chance of repeating this process 3-4 years from now.

Re: Does MM know what he's doing?

It was a great move by RR if you ask me. Pretty smart. If you want me, you better offer it or that's it. I'm the man, or nobody else is. It's probably got the AD in a wad right now. Very interesting stuff.

Re: Does MM know what he's doing?

i'm thinking what if we spend $20+ million buying out Saban's contract, another $20+ million to sign him and then HE doesn't live up to expectations....

OR we spend what $2 million? buying out Rich Rods and then $20 million to sign him, its still A LOT cheaper than Saban and we know both are good coaches and are taking the same risk for A LOT less money...

I do not think we would have to spend 20+ M to buy out Saban. If Saban was such a darling in Miami, I doubt he would be looking elsewhere. We would probably drop more money on him though. He is a proven coach in the SEC (pretty tough conference) and he sports that little ring on his finger. RR and Grobe are just flashes in the pan right now. They may develope into great ones or they may not.

Re: Does MM know what he's doing?

I hate to go out on a limb here, but hear me out. CMM has made 3 head coaching hires at Bama (I believe he didn't hire Dubose).

Think about this,

Dennis Franchione
Fran was a pretty good hire. He brought stability to the program at a time when we were definitely unstable. The program consistently improved under him. We had two winning seasons, and one 10 win season. If it weren't for the sanctions, we would have been in Atlanta at the end of the 02 season. It's hard to complain too much about him as a football coach, besides his recruiting. Would that have caught up with him eventually if he stayed in Tuscaloosa? Nobody will know. Was he a snake-oil salesman? Yes. Did he run a clean program when that was THE MOST IMPORTANT THING he had to do? Yes.

Mike Price
It's hard to argue that Mike Price was not well respected when he was hired on at Bama. For those of us worrying that we were going to get someone like Fran, who could care less for the University, Mike Price's press conference was refreshing. He spoke of how the Bama gig would be the end of the road for him. I really do think that he believed that, and so did we. Everyone was happy, points were scored in the A-day game, we could all sleep well at night. But then, personal issues came up. Did Mal know prior to his hiring Mike Price that these issues existed? Maybe. I don't know, maybe someone on the board does. He had some issues in Tuscaloosa, he was warned. He had some real issues in Florida, and he was finished as the coach. It's probable that Mike Price just didn't understand what he was getting himself into when he took the job. It's also apparent from his work at UTEP that he is a pretty good coach.

Mike Shula
This is where opinions are horribly mixed and people get upset. We had previously gone to two outsiders and both had been total busts. We were in the thick of NCAA probabation, and we didn't exactly have a laundry list of great coaches wanting the job. Some decent coaches turned us down, and it came down to two Bama boys, Mike Shula and Sylvester Croom. Neither had head coaching experience and both were assistants in the NFL. Croom appeared to have great motivational skills. Mike Shula was an unknown commodity as a head coach.
Here's where I go out on a limb - MIKE SHULA WAS HIRED TO BE FIRED. I know it sounds crazy, but imagine for a moment that Alabama had hired Croom and he had the same record as CMS over 4 years. Who would be our coach at this very moment? CMS was hired and given the opportunity to do great things. If he turned out to be a winner, everybody wins. If he turns out mediocre, well, we survive probation and can then go pursue a very good coach. If Sly were hired and things had gone well, everyone would be happy. If we had decided to fire him, things could have gotten VERY ugly.

Remember that Gene Stallings wasn't the most popular hire at Bama. It's not as simple as looking at what a person has done prior to taking the job. You have to look at work ethic, dedication, ability to adapt, ability to work well with others, ability to deal with Alabama's wonderful state media:rolleyes: and our fans , and ability to please EVERYBODY ALL OF THE TIME. I think CMM deserves this last shot to make things right with the Bama Nation.

Excellent post. I agree 99.5%. The only thing I haven't figured out was the raise for Shula. Some will say it was just a gift to increase his severance package but I do not know. There seemed to be some signs of tension there. Regardless, MM was faced with a really bad situation. A situation that we all worried and complained about at the time but now some want to act like it never happened. I do not think Mal could give Fran what he wanted. He brought in his friend Price because nobody else would step up and gave Shula his shot. I was not happy about the way the whole Shula firing was handled but that is water under the bridge now. While we can second guess him all day, I think Mm brought stability to the program when it looked to be in shambles.
