When he turned down Bama, he should have stayed at WV. He got a good raise and was loved by the fans. I compare him to Gary Patterson at TCU. Patterson has stayed and is considered one of the top coaches around. If Rich Rod had stayed he would likely still be considered one of the best around.

Coach Bryant retiring.


Not really...but his decision to retire was the last chapter in his amazing life. He got his reward...while the rest of us suffered through some tough years afterward.

Rich Rod is the worst fit I can think of at UM- Certain teams have a type of head man and Rod is a square peg trying to fit in a round hole in Ann Arbor. Just not a Big 10 (twelve) type coach.

If Dick Sheridan from NC State had accepted UGA's offer in 1988 to replce retiring Vince Dooley GA would have been in much better hands than Ray Goof for 7 long years. I cannot remember where he went after NC St.???

Torbush didnt have much choice. He wanted an offer to coach Alabama and when that wasn't going to happen he still hung around hoping for an assistants job. Mike Price came in and hired Joe Kines. Fran gave him an ultimatum come to A&M or he was hiring someone else so he was between a rock and a hard place.

I agree, although I believe it was made worse by how he left WVU (thus causing unnecessary distractions, etc.). It's like Bill Callahan at Nebraska, except not on the same level. I think Callahan could have been a good fit at some places...

I don't think it's on the same level as others mentioned, but Dan Hawkins could have landed in a much better situation than the one at Colorado. He took a team in complete disarray in a talented league as his first "big boy" job. Now, his credibility is lost, so he can't recruit, so he can't catch up... I think Hawkins would have been much better off had he waited for the right situation.

Fran should have never left TCU. Then he followed up with another gaffe leaving Bama. I remember listening to Coach Stallings on Finebaum when Fran left Bama. CGS said - paraphrased - Fran wasn't man enough to be head coach at Alabama

Chuck Fairbanks leaving OU after 1972 to coach.... the New England Patriots. Oklahoma went on to win two NC's in the next 3 yrs under a former wishbone OC under Fairbanks named Barry Switzer.
