Worst career coaching decisions?

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

Sorry about that- Mason turned down UGA Christmas 1995

Rich Rod is the worst fit I can think of at UM- Certain teams have a type of head man and Rod is a square peg trying to fit in a round hole in Ann Arbor. Just not a Big 10 (twelve) type coach.

If Dick Sheridan from NC State had accepted UGA's offer in 1988 to replce retiring Vince Dooley GA would have been in much better hands than Ray Goof for 7 long years. I cannot remember where he went after NC St.???
Dick Sheridan has never had a coaching job since he left NC State after the 92 season. Not sure what he is up to these days.

Interesting question. Makes you think about both the coach and the school's decision-making processes. Leaving moves to or from Tuscaloosa out of it, and in no particular order:

-- Spurrier to the Redskins.
-- Holtz to the NY Jets.
-- The Northwestern coach to Colorado (can't remember the name).
-- RichRod to Mitchigan.
-- Butch Davis to Cleveland.
-- Fran to aTm. I know I said leaving Alabama out of it. But this was just so badly handled on so many different levels that it qualifies.
-- Kiffin to Oakland.
-- Kiffin to UT.
-- Kiffin to USCw.
-- Man, Kiffin's been a disaster everywhere he's been. What were any of these teams thinking? He's the only guy who could make Al Davis look sane -- remember the "Liar" rant? Wonder how long this keeps going on?
-- OFC special: Gerry Faust to Notre Dame.
-- Schnellenberger to the USFL (his part) and later to Oklahoma (OU's part)
-- Ron Zook to Florida.
-- Ron Zook to Illinois.
-- Gerry DiNardo to Indiana.
-- Petrino to the Falcons.
-- Chan Gailey to the Cowboys by way of Samford.
-- OFC special, II: Chuck Fairbanks to New England.
-- Bud Wilkinson to politics.
-- Jack Crowe to Arkansas.
-- Pretty much anybody during Oklahoma's walk in the wilderness between Switzer and Stoops.

How about Sly Croom leaving a cush NFL job to coach at Miss State after being snubbed by Bama-I am still interested in what he could have accomplished at Bama but he should have known better than to go to MSU.
