Saban was college football’s foremost architect, but he still needed someone he could trust to provide him with the best materials—in other words, a recruiting coordinator. Saban needed one he could trust.

So he turned to someone who had worked with talented players such as quarterback Philip Rivers, and whose father had once been Saban’s boss. He handed the responsibility to a low-profile position coach named Curt Cignetti.
