They were running the most basic package... Coaches even said that after the game. They didnt' want to show anything, so they kept it vanilla.
Then you should be scared because that basic package shut down the Lankmeister in the second half.

that’s why there’s no winning at A-Day.

I'm sure if they had to play a game today it would be bad in every aspect from offense to defense. I'm not sure how much of the installation phase they are still in with everything, but my guess is there is still some "new" on everything and everybody that I expect to be off by August.
I get all that, but it doesn't change the aspect that Robinson and Koht were dominated physically by the OTs in the run game. As pass rush specialists, they've got some twitch and some 'juice' for sure. As guys who can hold up on the LOS against the run, they didn't have it at aday and it wasn't a scheme thing. Maybe they can gain some mass/bulk/strength before fall, but neither has really made big gains in that area in the time they've been at 'Bama.

From just last season our massive offensive line many times got beat by smaller defensive players. Some of that may have been they were up against smaller players who were just "stronger" or some of it could have been those smaller players used their quickness and understanding of leverage to beat them. I don't know, but I watched way too many times our massive NFL-sized OL get beat by smaller defensive lines/players. So, if we have issues in that area I would suspect we now have the coaching staff who can teach them to "skin the cat" another way.

Yup. And reports from I think he first scrimmage implied the run D was struggling a good bit. Definitely a concern IMO

IMO, there's only one position in football that makes you or breaks you and it's not a safety, even if he's a generational talent like Downs.

It's the QB position. This is the new reality.
For sure, but as Saban used to say, many games come down to a couple plays.

A player like Downs could be the difference between one or two of those plays going your way rather than the other way.

As Saban also used to say, players make plays, good players make other players better, and great players make an entire unit better.

Downs is a great player.

Caleb Downs is gone. He's a stud DB with a high FB-IQ and will be missed in the DBF for sure but, for me, I think I'll miss the punt catch/return ability he developed mid to late season more IF we have the same issues Kool-Aid had in the beginning. CKD is noted for doing more with less so I'm granting benefit of doubt at this point that he and staff will take the talent available and mold it into a very competitive product.

And he currently has more talent than he's ever had...

Yes, and much of it carry over from Saban recruits. The real test comes when those Saban recruits are gone, and only DeBoer recruits remain.
Well, unless a mass exodus happens, that's going to be a few years. The 2024 class is in the barn and all of those recruits were Sabans. So, we'll see. But considering the guy's track record, I think he'll be just fine.

If you do well this year - make the playoffs and win a few games in the playoffs, you will be in great shape going forward. This is his prove it year the way college football works today.

I mostly agree with this thought, it’s obviously the most important position, but Bryce proved the QB cannot do it alone.[/QUOTE]

A lot of the big dudes getting beat by the small guys was in pass situations, and I think Robinson and Koht can likely play that type of role just fine. Quickness and leverage can absolutely help a smaller guy be successful in that respect.

There's a big difference in how much smaller we're talking about though. Guys like Anderson, Braswell, and Turner were way smaller than then OTs they faced, but were big enough to still hold up in the run game.

Then there is smaller like where Robinson and Koht are: Robinson is 231, Koht is 232. Roster weight for Braswell was 255, Turner 252 and Anderson 253. 20-25 pounds of good mass and muscle makes a HUGE difference in the ability to get into and hold the gap, especially when it's edge contain. At UW (scheme we are moving to), the "small edge"/Wolf guys on the 2 deep were 255 and 260 so still a bigger body type than what Robinson and Koht are.

They remind me of an early Tim Williams, who was a great pass rusher the minute he stepped on campus and was able to contribute in that role but didn't get expanded responsibilities till his last year when he finally got up to about 245. Even then he was never the full time guy as that was Ryan Anderson as Anderson was able to hold up on the edge (being bigger/stronger) better than Williams could

I think they'll figure it out, I really do. I'm not pushing "the season is over" button just yet. I think we've got a staff that is exponentially better than what Saban had the last five years and I'll trust they'll figure it out until they don't.

Possibly - but sometimes it comes down to the Jimmy's and Joe's more than the X's and O's. Gotta have the right types of guys in the right spots to make the scheme work.
