The US economy added 353,000 jobs last month, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday, registering a far stronger than expected gain to kick off 2024.

January’s gains blew economists’ expectations out of the water: Consensus forecasts had called for a net gain of 176,500 jobs last month, according to FactSet.

The unemployment rate remained at 3.7%.

It’s the 24th consecutive month that the nation’s jobless rate has been under 4%.

This story is developing and will be updated.

I have always been confused by the "jobs added or created". Because I know 3 people that were laid off around New Years and all 3 have gotten a new job. so are you or anyone trying to say Biden and his admin. got them their new jobs?

my guess without checking is that in the situation that you mention, these numbers will net out as these numbers are aggregates based on industry sector, etc. if they switched sectors, you would see a loss in one sector and a gain in the other. however, it's hard to extrapolate individual data as these data are based on samples

you can find the methodology for most of these stats at the bls site

Peeling back the layer of the onion. As one FRB president said, a lot of these jobs were part time.
Two things here - some of us only want to work part time, or are only able to.
Some are choosing to because their views on life and what makes them happy are changing. They’re beginning to abandon the nonsense of “keeping up with the Jones’s “ and it has nothing to do with “underachieving”. Their values have changed and they think 👏 that there are things more important than money,
It’s good for companies that can keep workers happy by not forcing the ones that don’t want to, to work 40 hours. Companies with the happiest employees are the best companies to work for, and oftentimes the most successful.

One letter was sent by seven Democrats and more than a dozen Republicans who are part of the bipartisan Energy Export Caucus.

The seven Democrats who signed the letter are Reps. Henry Cuellar (Texas), Lou Correa (Calif.), Mary Sattler Peltola (Alaska), Vicente Gonzalez (Texas), Jared Golden (Maine), Jim Costa (Calif.) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Wash.).

The other letter, with more than 150 Republican signatures, was led by House Energy and Commerce Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and joined by members of House leadership, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

Both of the letters argued that the U.S. should continue to grow its natural gas exports to counter gas coming from Russia.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday will announce $1.2 billion of student debt relief for nearly 153,000 borrowers — and he’s sending emails to make sure they know whom to thank for it.

The administration’s latest tranche of loan forgiveness covers borrowers who are enrolled in Biden’s new loan repayment program, initially borrowed $12,000 or less and have been repaying their debt for at least 10 years.

America's top executives are strikingly more confident about the economy, with expectations of stronger sales and capital investments — plans that indicate the economy might keep booming in the months ahead.
Why it matters: For the first time in two years, the Business Roundtable's quarterly gauge of CEO sentiment — first seen by Axios — is above its historical average, signaling that business leaders' economic uneasiness may finally be fading.

By the numbers: The lobbying group's index jumped by 11 points in the first quarter to 85 — topping the long-running average by 2 points.

  • That double-digit surge reflects a larger share of CEOs planning to increase capital spending — investments in equipment, factories and the like — and expectations of stronger company sales relative to the previous quarter.
  • The sub-index for capital spending over the next six months surged by 16 points; the sales sub-index surged by 13 points.
  • Plans for hiring edged up more modestly, by 5 points. That sub-index remains depressed relative to two years ago, a sign that the rip-roaring hiring rates have been replaced with more modest employment plans.
What they're saying: "This quarter's survey results underscore the resiliency of the U.S. economy and suggest accelerating economic activity over the next six months," Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, who chairs the Business Roundtable, said in a statement.

Gotta do something about the border first. How do propose to do that when Senator Ron Johnson suggests that Republicans shouldn't ever pass anymore legislation?

Looks like something someone could vote for. Who isn't for reducing the deficit?

I wish we could get our COVID checks back that we used to payoff my wife's student loans. If only we had neglected her loans for a few more years.

I wish he could cancel personal loan debt... talk about relief.
I don't know if you meant to imply the loans that were forgiven were neglected, but these people met their service obligations and were entitled to forgiveness.

The Biden administration announced this week that it will pause student loan forgiveness processing under a key program.

The suspension is part of a broader transition, whereby the Department of Education will be taking over the administering of several student loan forgiveness programs from contracted loan servicers. During the pause, borrowers can submit student loan forgiveness applications, but will not receive any discharges until the transition period is complete.

_________

This will be a good thing because MOHELA is the devil, but the timing sucks.

DETROIT (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday awarded $20 billion in federal green bank grants to eight community development banks and nonprofit organizations to use on projects combating climate change in disadvantaged communities and helping Americans save money and reduce their carbon footprints.

The money could fund tens of thousands of eligible projects ranging from residential heat pumps and other energy-efficient home improvements to larger-scale projects such as electric vehicle charging stations and community cooling centers.
