LOL - I give up. You guys just pick out the pieces that you want and ignore the gist of the argument - that this system is unfair.

You throw up huge hurdles, and if Utah cannot afford to jump over those hurdles, they are "choosing" to be a non-factor.

Fine. I am sure that you are all right. I am wrong. It is their fault. They are just wannabes who are afraid of the big, bad BCS conferences. You win... :biggrin2:

I'm with you, I gave up a few topics back.

Are you saying your victory over PITT gives you legitimate claim to the 2004 MNC?
Maybe you do need a week at Alta;)

I always will agree when someone says I need a week at Alta. That's good terrain and even better snow.

I would never claim that a victory over PITT in 2004/05 would qualify a team for a championship. That year the schedule was weaker than this year. We played Texas A&M and North Carolina but they weren't much to shout about. We had beaten Cal and Oregon the year before but that only helped with our starting rank for the 2004 season.

My statement about 2004 is that we destroyed every team on our schedule. The scores aren't indicative of the blowouts either because we pulled starters pretty early in each game allowing teams to score more than they might have otherwise. Each game was decided by the end of the first quarter. It was an undefeated season and we had as much claim on the trophy as the other undefeateds. Though we didn't go the Auburn route with the rings. ;)

Our offense was far more explosive in 2004 than this year. Those Utes could have competed with anyone and I believe they would have beat USC or Auburn. Urban Meyer agrees (yeah, I know. Totally unbiased opinions).

It is too bad that neither team got the chance to prove themselves in a playoff. As a side note, both Auburn and USC has had some allegations of improper recruiting/player contact in 2004. Utah has had no such allegation.

I said with a few exceptions. Utah scheduled Michigan, Texas and Oregon State that we know of. Looks like a good start to me...

I was saying that sometimes you have to travel beyond your backyard . I think it would be a positive for Utah even if they had to go so far as .... Pitt , VaT , WVa , Ole Miss , Clemson , N.Car , etc. .

I admire your defense of the little guy, but it might be time to take up another noble cause like feeding homeless beach mice in Gulf Shores.

Is there an address where we can send packages of cheese, water and Folger's Coffee cans made into little FEMA trailers for them to live in?

This is probably unfair to ask of Utah seeing as how Bama really doesn't go very far either. Yes, we went to Oklahoma in the 2000's, but I wouldn't consider the Hawai'i trip any sort of game that we would pump our chest about.

Utah is a fair piece away from Michigan, so is Texas.

Bama traveled to UCLA in 2000. A reason we didn't travel far lately is due to the NCAA sanctions and loss of bowl revenue. Hawaii paid Alabama travel money to come to Hawaii. Prior to 2000 Alabama made trips to N. Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Texas, we traveled but there are a lot of quality teams closer we can play.

Back a page or 2 , we were talking about FSU going anywhere to play anyone and that was how credibility was gained during the 80's which in turn served them very well in the 90's . Sometimes you have to go farther and if Utah wants to gain credibility , respect and eventual entry into a BCS conference , as FSU accomplished , odds are that they will need to do the same .

Look how well going to OK , Neb , AzSt , ND , OhSt , etc. during the 80's eventually paid off for FSU during the 90's . Same type of scenario which I believe would help Utah . It's a proven path . If Utah doesn't try , they'll continue to remain non factors every January . JMO :)

They've done that recently. We played North Carolina and Louisville in the last few years. When we scheduled Louisville they looked to be a solid team... we all know how that has worked out.

The other problem not being considered is the difficulty of scheduling these games. FSU did it in a different time, teams were willing to play these games. Now the big programs are guarding their records. They'll schedule another big time program but only because it's perceived that a loss to them would be less damaging than a loss to Utah. If we get contracts signed with teams they may cancel before the game is played (example: Texas). Utah is trying to schedule up where they can but we are playing by a different set of rules.

For those mentioning BYU's schedule next year... they've had a recent plan of scheduling down to have a better record. Their previous coach had some tough schedules and the records were dismal. Their current coach started trying to dumb down the schedule but has changed course now that they have seen their rival get more accolades by doing what we have against stronger programs.

Anyway, yes we are tryingto schedule up. But it isn't always easy to schedule a team that isn't willing to play us. We have to rely on a lot of bowl matchups, which we seem to be doing well with.

I understand that. However, we lost both to UCLA and Oklahoma whereas Utah won their games.

We do have quality teams around us, but we must come out of the perception that Utah MUST travel East to play "real" opponents.

Guys, seriously, lets pull the punches at least a LITTLE.

They played their conference and won their games. They scheduled non-conference games with Oregon State (who beat USC) and Michigan. It's not their fault Michigan stunk it up this year. That's like the same people who talked about our weak schedule after Clemson started to tank. Clemson was Top 10 when we got them.

They beat us. I know, we didn't have Andre and such, but let's give credit where it is due.

Do I think they could beat Florida? Sure. Ole Miss did, we almost did, why not Utah?

Utah - Great team this year. I hope you guys do manage to get into the PAC-10, but I doubt USC will ever allow a team that's a legit threat come into their conference.

I, for one, will not fault another team just because they beat us. We don't have a Toomer's Corner for a REASON.

You think name schools weren't protecting their records during the 80's & 90's ? I had only mentioned the schools which are farther away but , FSU played many others with much more to lose down here in their own backyard as well - Fla , Ga , barn , Clemson , etc. . They made every possible effort . It worked and Utah must follow FSU's example in order to reach the top of the mountain .

With 12 game schedules and SOS being a BCS factor , you have to shoot for the moon and do it now while the iron is hot . If not , you're going to go nowhere in the near future @ 11-2 , 12-1 or even 13-0 and your coach will soon move on to greener pastures . Don't be afraid of coming up short and becoming SoMiss

Quality bowl matchups are great but , obviously they haven't had the meaning you'd hope for or prefer . At this point , I feel all means should be exhausted in making every possible attempt to play anyone and to even play them 2 for 1 in their house if necessary . Publicly rip every program that declines the offer so you can shame others into accepting . Call Tuscaloosa - you never know .....

So, would a SoS of, say, 35th in the country be good?

Only if it's good enough  I think we all know where they're going if they fail to make every effort each and every year - nowhere :)

At one time , had SoMiss won 3 more games - PnSt , TxA&M & Neb , they would be on a different level today . At least they tried . I know Utah has as well but , it's time to press the issue across the country even if they sign bad 2 for 1 deals and lose cash .
