Where to place the blame on our poor o-line play is a mystery. My personal opion is that they are 'too nice' and don't have that killer instinct/swagger/get out of my face attitude that previous o-lines at UT have had.

The blocking schemes are just not working and haven't for the last two years. Definate advantage to Bama. That said, they somehow manage to get things done enough.
Sometimes, it's just coaching. We suffered for several years with "Bucket-step" Bob Connelly, whose mantras were "Be physical, but don't be aggressive," and "Nobody bull-rushes anymore." Pendry came in and took the same group of talent and turned them into road-graders on running plays...

i would highly suggest a bucket step technique for the upcoming game ;)

I think it will be a close game. I know TX is very deep and has playmakers in all 3 phases of the game. Have ya'll had any injuries or inelligible situations that have caused starters to be out for the season and the championship game?
The running game is non existent because co-starters McGee & Whittaker have been battling nagging injuries since last year. Cody Johnson is a short yardage specialist and considered too big to run the spread, he came in overweight during the summer. They only signed one RB, 4/5-star Whaley, came in out of shape resulting in a redshirt.
Newton wasn't expected to compete but did a terrific job until he suffered a concussion mid-season, some wondered just how healthy he is.
Applewhite is the RB coach, though no one dares question his ability. I for one think we need a proven RB coach, let Major have the QBs

(4 TEs out the year, they converted a lineman-Smith & WR-Buckner to fill the role but Smith can't catch and Buckner can't block)
Starter TE Irby out for season, knee
TE Grant out for season,knee
TE Marshall retired due to injury
TE Harris out for season,neck

Starter WR-Collins academically ineligible
Starter DB-Scott academically ineligible
KR/RB Monroe suspended indefinitely, was one of the top KRs in the country before suspension

First, congratulations on winning the BIG 12 Championship game.

I believe that is Coach Brown's 2nd in just 12 years? Interesting.

Who were UT's non-conference opponents?

Who is your leading rusher and finally who is Colt's backup and did he play much this year?
Big XII championships is a sore spot for us.

We played UTEP, Louisiana-Monroe, Wyoming and UCF. We WERE scheduled to play Arkansas this year but they backed out last minute and we had to scramble to find Wyoming.

Leading rusher? What is that? I don't think we have one.

Actually it is Tre Newton with 513 yards. We actually have a few good running backs Fozzy Whittaker, Tre Newton, Cody Johnson and DJ Monroe. Problem is we have a crappy O line, no TE and a bad scheme for running.

Garrett Gilbert is McCoy's backup and he looks very good. He has only had 26 pass attempts this year and has played mostly in mop up duty.

I was puzzled about that hire. My assumption was that it was a "warehouse" position until the staff could be juggled around to give him the QBs...

My family is good friends with Mac McWhorter, who is the offensive line coach and is one of the better ones in the nation. What are the main problems on your offensive line.
Biggest problem is depth and talent, we had a lot of young guys having to step up. Some are playing out of position due to injuries and lack of depth. The recruits that came in were mostly 4-5 star rated but haven't lived up to their potential. Another key is asking these guys to run block out of a passing formation.
Over all the line has been good but not great, the nebraska game was the worst I've seen in years. I don't expect that to happen again BUT with our OC Davis, he is so predictable that defenses pretty much know what to expect.

Um, move along li'l sip. I believe you're in Bama territory now. Quit talking about us behind our back or we'll brand your newest cow.

t.u. is gonna get dog-stomped in the championship game. I, of course, am basing that on the fact that your mentally-challenged little step-brother hung 39 points on your vaunted defense. Bama doesn't have the defensive gaps that we had, nor the offensive ineptitude of Nebraska.

This game's gonna be a blow out, and your li'l stepbrother is firmly in the Alabama camp.

P.S. I have NO problem with those chapped lovelies though, and I too have had more than a little fun on 6th Street. Austin is a great town, except for a few acres of concrete and ego in the middle of it. :D

BTW, Bama fans, looks like you have a pretty good collection of Horns on this thread. I'm actually finding their answers enlightening as well and, for the most part, pretty self-aware. We don't get to see that side of 'em much in Aggieland. ;)

I realize Bama's past history with Aggy (the whole Bear thing) but I still don't understand it. Aggy is our Auburn. What would the University of Alabama have in common with Auburn other than sharing a state border? The same goes for UT-Aggy. Add in the Aggy fake army thing and it makes them more weird than AU could even begin to imagine.
It's not our job to help you understand the ins and outs of our instate rivalry with Auburn. We don't like them. They don't like us. They obsess over us. We try to ignore them.

Y'all can keep your instate hatred on y'all's own boards or you won't be posting on ours for long. Read the site's policies on "ignorant sparring between posters."

OC Davis is the QB coach, many suspect he doesn't have a clue to what he's doing. You won't find many UT fans that like Davis, he's too predictable and cocky in terms of "talent wins ball games not schemes".

Major is suppose to be the OC in "waiting". He should be moved to QB coach I think he would be excellent for the job and bring in an experienced RB coach that can actually relate to them on all levels.
Only great thing he's done is cut down on fumbles but production is way down.

Savannah, I too offer a mea culpa on this one and will do my best to keep it minimized. The catch is that our two rivalries really are quite similar and despite protestations to the contrary, all four schools are significant parts of one another's history and - yes - even our personalities.

As an Ag, I completely understand why Horn fans would drag us into an "official ask Texas fans questions thread". I also understand why the Aubies are such a part of the Bama questions. Just happens, the nature of the beast.

But I hear ya - I get it. And I will do my best to comply as well, though I wasn't the subject of your reprimand here.

Hello :BigA:Bama nation!

First off, major hook'em for knocking off lord tebow and the gators!
Second, I can't wait for this game!

Some notes for you guys about Texas for those that haven't followed us.

Run O: Non existent, the backs are plenty talented, but not enough so to consistently make something out of nothing. The line scheme rarely calls for straight up drive blocking, and our lineman just aren't strong enough to maintain blocks while moving sideways in our zone scheme. Once in a blue moon it works, and our backs make the most of it.

RB Tre Newton has excellent vision and feel for where to go. Not the strongest or fastest or quickest, but has enough of each to hold his own. He is immune to arm tackles for some reason, not a big guy just great balance. It all doesn't really matter though because the line never gets him a hole to run through.
The fastest RB is Fozzy Whittaker, he has had injury problems and got behind on the depth chart, but he could be a surprise contributor. He runs alot like Jamaal Charles used to.
Strongest is 250lb Cody Johnson. Big man runs hard and strong but has suprising feet. Also would rather hit you in the mouth than go out of bounds. Goaline stud running behind Lamaar Houston.

WR's, one to look out for is Malcom Williams. 6-3 225 and straight line maybe the 3rd fastest guy on the team. Has occasional drops but also makes occasional amazing plays. If Colt has time, look for 2 deep throws off double moves or PA, if he gets a step, he's gone.

TE: we have none :frown: the blocking TE Greg Smith is serviceable, just not a threat of any kind. no depth at all, zero

OL:

QB: Colt of course, then backup Garret Gilbert who is a 5-star and split between Matt Barkley of USC as the #1 QB recruit from last year. He has played in mop up duty against the baylors of the world. If it comes down to needed him, well, nobody knows. Talented for sure though.

DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Muschamp Boom Squad

DE: FAST! S. Acho and Kindle on the ends, if they sniff PA you need to hope your QB gets his head around before its taken off. Kindle is very strong at the point of attack, especially for his size. Acho is also solid. backup end Jones is right behind Acho talent wise and will be a potential star next year as a starter.
DT: Lamaar Houston is a non stop motor running, very quick, fairly strong, do anything to make the tackle guy. He has been huge for us this year.
Ben Alexander has done very well filling the other gaps, but is for sure the week point on D. Backups have talent but very little to no experience

LB: Kinlde plays OLB when we line up in 3-4, and plays to the opposite direction should never think about cutting back, he is a missile. OLB's in 4-3 are E. Acho and K. Robinson. Robinson is very fast but not the strongest getting off blocks. E. Acho runs like a robot but is always at the right place at the right time. Clutch player this year and a huge surprise.
MLB Rodrick Muckleroy is the best LB Texas has had since Derrick Johnson, and his technique is far superior. always blowing up plays up the middle, chasing them down, and deflecting passes. Man is three places at once on the field.

CB: Aaron Williams is going to make Julio Jones disappear and thats no slight to mr Jones. The prototype corner, his absence alone accounted for 2 TD's against A&M. As a sophomore he is playing like sr year Aaron Ross. Cu Brown and Ch Brown are talented also but have occasional brain farts that result in TD's

S: Earl Thomas is Ed Reed. Do not throw the ball his way if you want to ever see it again. Especially a deep ball. He is ridiculous.
Blake Gideon is actually kinda fast for a white safety  but he will take bad angles or just get outmatched 1v1. However as a top free safety he does very well in coming across to help corners on deep throws, always plays the ball. He is a liability against the run. If Ingram gets to the secondary with any head of steam, he could be gone.

quick note on Special Teams

PR: Jordan Shipley is a real threat, don't worry about distance just kick high and don't let him return it
KR: Marquise Goodwin is a future Olympic track star, and he's pretty good at WR too. If he gets a single step on ANYONE you have, gone.

Kickoff: we suck horribly at coverage, really, i cringe every return.
Punting: Rugby style, with time is very good, without time its hard to watch.

The negatives: (I am not a complete homer...close but not lol)

Defense is used to three and outs every outing. They will get tired if you guys stay on the field and convert 3rd down. see the A&M game, that was the only game this D didn't shut the other team down completely especially after halftime.
Nebraska was the first real run run run team we played, but they are a bad run run run team. It was a good warm up for you guys, but just that, a warm up.

Offense is far too inconsistent. If the line doesn't block, Colt doesn't have time to breath, and things go no where. the running game is a second thought, and not dependable in any situation. If you get pressure with your front four, you win.
However Colt is very very good against the blitz, if he sees it, he will hot route you to death. Last year this kept us alive against Ohio State, but the clutch receiver we relied on from the slot is gone this year, and his replacements have dropped balls. If our WR's catch the ball when Colt gets it there, he will make you sick of blitzing. I know its your guys thing, but if Tx completes balls, you will pull your hair out.

This is far too long
I see this game being alot like the BigXII CG, except your O can move the ball and Tx will take advantage of your blitzing. If you pressure with the front four, you win. If you have to blitz, its a super close game and comes down to who makes plays.

no hard feelings but I'm taking the Tx O vs AL D over the AL O vs Tx D
it will be a treat though. I look forward to seeing how close the Tx D is to the famed SEC Defesnes. I think we are right there with you guys.

21-17 good guys with a score on D or special teams for the horns, and an AL field goal off Tx turnover
Hook'em!

Austin, I have a question. What's the pulse in your part of Texas on Muschamp? Was there any concern after that game vs. us or was it pretty much considered a hiccup. I happen to believe the guy's pretty brilliant, but many of my own kind would disagree. Defensing Nebraska wasn't much of a challenge cuz they had a gun loaded and pointed at their own foot.

In your opinion, where does Muschamp make adjustments to prevent another load-up like the T-day game?
