Bama needs to buy out the Duke game

Bama needs to buy out of the Duke game. If they don't, then the ut game wil be their 7th straight game, in 7 weeks, against a BCS opponent with 4 of those 7 on the road. Again this season, the ut game will be Bama's fifth consecutive SEC game, with 3 of those on the road. Meanwhile, as usual, ut will have had the week off. We all know how that worked out this past season. A lesser team would not have won that game.

If no other opponent can be found to fill this spot, so what? Pay Duke to come to Tuscaloosa. They also will be unable to find another opponent.

By the way, my position on this subject has changed because of the SEC bye weeks. When Durham was announced as the site of the game, I was one of the few who was of the opinion that Bama had signed a "home and away" series with Duke and that, within reason, Duke could play this game anywhere they wanted. If I had known at the time that the SEC was going to give 6 of Bama's conference opponents an open date before their game with Bama and that all 6 of them were going to take that week off, I would have been on the side of those who said Bama should not play this game in Durham.

Re: Duke game

They are not coming here next year? If not I agree lets put Utah on the schedule pay them to come down here. Settle that jibber jabber once and for all.

Re: Duke game

if the future you are going to see more home-away series. It is costing too much to bring in a division 1a tem. WE are either going to hve to play teams like Jacksonville State, Samford and South AL at home or go to an home-away series with teams like Arkansas state.

That's beyond crazy. Maybe we could get Texas or Oklahoma to fill that empty Duke spot. The thread starter is commenting we need to ease the schedule not make it harder.

Bama played their half of the series in Tuscaloosa in 2006. This years game there was postponed from 2008 in order to play Clemson. Bama very rarely schedules such a series without playing the first game at home.

Cost is far, far from the issue. And hell will freeze over before Bama plays at Arkansas State!

I don't think we will ever see the day that Bama returns the trip to a team on the same level as Arkansas State. For that matter, we never returned the trip to Southern Miss and they are Conference USA.

Players get up for tough out of conference games. That would only be one other quality non conference team on the schedule. Remember we have Vandy back on the schedule now so that helps or hurts depending if it comes down to a strength of schedule thing. I for one believe we are at a place where we can play some tougher teams out of conference. I know the argument may be the other teams in the SEC always schedule cupcakes putting us at a disadvantage when we play them. To that I say we are Alabama and they are not. We are deeper, better prepared, better coached and our fans will be pumped up for any quality non conference opponent giving us just that added uumph. Either way I know it want happen and it may or may not be "beyond crazy" but hey I can dream and when I dream I always where my Crimson Glasses. Thanks for the response my first spanking by Bayou, I really belong now.

Have you even looked at the schedule? Vandy is NOT back on the schedule. Florida is back on the schedule! Vandy will replace SC in 2011.

Re: Duke game

2011 is when I assumed before the topic was posted that we would have Duke at home. After looking at the schedule we have a very exciting road game against Penn State and I was just thinking how nice it would be to win another exciting match up against another top tier team at home after we beat Penn State on the road the previous week. With the team and staff we have now I believe that we can beat anyone on any given Saturday. I just wished I was just starting school now and not having graduated last year to enjoy this ride. I believe we are witnessing history and the rebirth of a dynasty. yea I am drinking the Crimson Kool Aid and it is sweet.

;) Welcome to the club. I often comment when people want Alabama to play the SEC schedule plus as many top 20 opponents as we have off dates. Surely we are once again invincible and surely every team we call will make whatever arrangements needed to meet us on any given date. ;)

I am satisfied with our schedule at least most of our games are televised. :)

Re: Duke game

While we're at it, why don't we schedule the Saints and the Colts as well?

While I'd prefer not to have all of these games against rested opponents, it is what it is and we just have to work through it.

First rule to remember about Bama scheduling. Bama does not play the first game of a series on the road. Even the rotating SEC non-division opponents are included in that rule. Florida at Bama in 2010. Bama at Florida in 2011. Vandy at Bama in 2011. Bama at Vandy in 2012. Penn State at Bama in 2010. Bama at Penn State in 2011. Duke at Bama in 2006. Bama at Duke in 2010.

Yeah, we're at a position now where we can beat anyone on a given Saturday, but not Saturday after Saturday. Think of it like a man walking through a snake pit and doesn't get bitten, but if you keep adding more snakes to the pit, sooner or later, he's gonna get bitten.

Other schools aren't so foolish and we shouldn't be either.

SEC play yes, but not true for out of conference. We opened the series at UCLA in 2000 and they returned the trip in 2001 at home. Opened the series with Oklahoma in Norman 2002 and they returned the trip in 2003.

Re: Duke game

I for one don't think we should "buy-out" the Duke game. It was a scheduling snafu by Moore, one of the few he's made and I believe we should honor our horrible decision and play the game. It sickens me when teams such as Hawaii, Boise and other smaller teams have contracts with big time schools, look forward to those particular games for YEARS and then only have the team buy them out as soon as it comes time for them to play the game. I'll never forget 2007 when Hawaii had Michigan State and Texas buy-out on their contracted games. Surely we wouldn't have had to witness that embarrassing game in the Sugar Bowl that year hadn't not been for these silly buy-outs.

It's officially the off-season.... the first of 10,000 scheduling threads has begun.
