I don't participate in this forum very much, so my opinion should not carry nearly the weight of those who do. That said, the primary reason I don't participate too much in this forum is its very potential for volatility. It's not that I don't carry strong feelings and beliefs about various issues. Believe me - I do. It's just that over the years, I've never once seen someone's mind changed on a politically charged issue, no matter how shrill the argument gets, on either side of the argument.
I am not new to TideFans. I've been a member (and posting) off and on for around 10 years. Due partly to the demands of my profession and partly to occasional prolonged disinterest, I've let several memberships and/or passwords lapse or get forgotten. Hence, this incarnation's only recent join-date.
I used to post quite frequently in Non-Sports and enter into the fray. But again, I've never seen an opinion change. The same is true for my experiences offline. My brother and I are diametrically opposed in our political and socio-economical views. He constantly wants to debate and discuss these controversial issues. I am constantly trying to stiff-arm the debate. It's only led to argument, resentment and frustration. I'd rather just spend time with him as the brother that I love and as a fellow devoted Alabama fan.
So no - I'd rather not see the limits expanded here. For what, exactly? Will a louder voice somehow promote a more meaningful discussion or a better chance of finding agreement or common ground? I seriously doubt it. In my opinion and in my experience, in the arena of controversy, more latitude only leads to less civility.
But as I said: I already don't really participate in the controversial threads, primarily because of the risk/reward ratio that already exists in Non-Sports: high risk of tempers flaring, low chance of the reward of actually solving anything. So my opinion really doesn't matter too much in this case.
