They really want to pick up a first down here.

I also hate the term "Real Deal" It seems to be applied to just about any top recruit.

This may be more basketball related, but...

A player sits out - "he takes a blow"
A player subs in - "player A gives player B a blow"

... i used to think john madden was the worst for these things

... my favorite is: *he's got to make that catch!!*

... also, *if they don't move the chains, they won't win*

... and one that's not really a cliche i guess, but i see it a lot now days - it's the expression; *foot speed*, as in *he has slow foot speed*

... my first thought is always, what other kind of speed would a guy have when he runs?

... maybe as opposed to *bicycle speed* or *skateboard speed* :D

Don't know if it's "Cliche" but every so often I hear:

"They don't want to get into a scoring contest with ______"

(which I'm pretty sure Scoring was one of the silly "keys to victory" mentioned before the game started; so, I'm pretty sure that they do want to get into a scoring contest)

What I'm sure the announcer was intending to say is - the cliche':

"They don't want to make this into a track meet" Yes..yes I do a want this football game to be a track meet, and I want Terrence Cody as anchor on the 4x100

Not a cliche, but every time Chris Fowler calls an end around a reverse I want to reach through the television and strangle him.
Have you noticed that 90% of the pass attempts in a game he will call the pass as, "He loops it over the middle." Really?? The most i've ever seen the ball do is spiral, perhaps even wobble slightly. But, to throw the football in a loop, we'll that'd be astounding. Good grief, where did he come up with that? :conf2:

What's interesting to me is that almost all of these cliche's represent a valid concept. A cliche' is just a bankrupt way to express the idea. Some of them aren't the brightest sorts, so they fall back on previously memorized phrases. The dumbest apply the right phrases at the wrong places or just string a bunch together, hoping something will fit...
A cliche is a french term used to describe a print plate for the printing press using movable type. Common phrases were often cast as individual plates to save time. The english term for these plates is....du du dun uh...a stereotype.

Isn't etymology fun!

"This game is far from over," usually said with a quarter or two on the left to play. Or sometimes expressed as "It's not over yet, Verne!" Or sometimes they'll explicity say "we've still got __________ minutes to play in the ballgame."

And pretty much time someone misses a catch it's "he's gotta come down with those, you can't miss those." And then sometimes when describing Tebow Gary and Verne, not sure which one, would just say "Wow." Not shout, but say it like they've just been struck by some great force.

Each and every cliché mentioned is another reason I toggle the sound off when watching a game on tv. I don't need 3 hours of non-stop, over-analyized, cliché-ridden tautology in order to understand or enjoy a college football game.
