shoot, catch phrases and cliches made keith jackson the greatest. This must be the off season and we need some thing fresh to talk about, so, how about 'its a new ball game ' . by the way, coach bryant always used cliches on his show.

I can't stand it when they ask guys like Holtz, or for that matter anyone what their keys to victory are and they say something to the effect of:
"They need to control the ball on offense, limit the big plays on defense, and avoid turnovers, and blank team will win the game." Well thank you for that gem! What a perfect strategy for any team to follow! They also need to "put the ball in the endzone."
... i used to think john madden was the worst for these things

... my favorite is: *he's got to make that catch!!*

... also, *if they don't move the chains, they won't win*

... and one that's not really a cliche i guess, but i see it a lot now days - it's the expression; *foot speed*, as in *he has slow foot speed*

... my first thought is always, what other kind of speed would a guy have when he runs?

... maybe as opposed to *bicycle speed* or *skateboard speed* :D
Madden is definitely the worst. In one of his videos games a few years ago I remember there was a commentary clip by Madden saying, "if you want to win the game, you've got to score more points than the other team."

Classic.

I don't know if it's been posted as I didn't read through all the pages....and it's not just a college cliche' as I hear it in the pros too. A player gets close to the 1st down marker and.......

"It depends on the spot" - really, Captain Obvious?

A relatively new one "they are playing behind the chains". Duh? If they were playing ahead of the chains wouldn't every play be a first down?

They Came To Play

"He's got a man!" - Oh really? I thought he had a girlfriend

"He's got speed in space" - So he can't run fast if someone is next to him?

"He's got all the intangibles" - Oh, I thought he was loaded with tangibles.

"He runs crisp clean routes" - So other guys are dirty and soggy?

"They're trying to feel out the defense" - Now that's just nasty!

"They have to stop the big play" - NO REALLY!?

"They are doing too much grabbing on defense" - Duh...huh?

Well, duh!!
