And people wonder why I don't fawn over PSU and JoePa like others here do. Prior to PSU finally being given a MNC JoePa was the Rodney Dangerfield of college football. He cried so much you thought he was neck deep in a sack of onions. It was a great rivalry, PSU has some great fans but we got robbed on the field. Penn St couldn't beat Coach Bryant or Bill Curry but they did whatever it took to beat Ray Perkins.

As I recall, his nephew wasn't just any old player either, he was the one and only Mike Guman.
Mike Guman's uncle was the Field Judge in that game and signalled TD on the play. Jack O'Rourke was the Back Judge who waived off the play. He was banned the next week from ever doing another PSU game and retired from officiating at the end of the 1983 season.

The closest I've ever come to kicking the tube out of my television. I had to lay down for about three hours. That one call started us on a total downhill slide.

In reference to the above, yes I think it was his nephew. The same official made a similar blown call the year before that handed Penn State a "win" over Nebraska.

That was just horrible.

sip
Mike Guman's uncle was the Field Judge on that crew and actually signalled TD on the play. The Back Judge, Jack O'Rourke was the official that waived off the play.

The bad call on the pass from Todd Blackledge to Mike McCloskey in the 1982 Nebraska game was probably made by Mr. Guman because it occurred on the Field Judge's side of the field.

Speaking of this...

Did anyone hear the new Friday episode of CSS Talking football which named Bama as pre-season #1 pick and they pretty much spent the entire show breaking down Bamas attributes, schedule and season. In this episode Tony Barnhardt (I think was the one who specifically said this) made a comment that Paterno said recently to him that "they had had some success down there before".

Ummmmmmmmmm but Joe wasnt that 1987 when BDS was absolutely nothing what is now. Seriously we had 60,000 seats in 1987 and Bill Curry was our coach and hes comparing that team to a Nick Saban coached team with a complete 180 in talent, etc.
on a year after we went 14-0 with everyone else that we have NOW. HA!

Do you have a link for this? There's nothing at all in the link you provided. Also, it goes contrary to all the comments from the participants after the game and later years...

SI did a small story on this. They had the field and endzone drawn up where in the back of the EZ it was cut out and was short in the area, then another game a Penn State player made a catch and was out of bounds but the REf ruled him in and that area was drawn real wide.

At least the public got the real version there, but we still lost the game. And I do remember it very well. To travel so far and play well enough to win. Didn't they just win a NC?

My link was pertaining to the 1982 Nebraska game. I have known for many years that Mr. Guman was the Field Judge and not the Back Judge on that crew in the 1983 Bama game. I had forgotten the Back Judge's name over the years, but recently saw it on one of the PSU forums. In my search for that link, I did confirm that Mr. Guman was the Field Judge in the Nebraska game. I will find the link that names Mr. O'Rourke as the Back Judge who made the call and send it to you.

The best drawing I ever saw came from a PSU alumni group. It showed an equal amount added and subtracted. They stated that with the subtraction, the integrity of the total square footage of the field was back in place.

I don't think they let Joe really do that much coaching any more...

I would like to see it and also a picture of Guman signaling TD...

I watched that and most of those guys pretty much seemed like idiots.

Didn't UA renegotiate the contract so that SEC refs called the game in Happy Valley and let independent officials call the games at Alabama after that game? Does anyone remember this or am I making this up?

That was a terrible call. Seems like that was the first ball game Kerry Goode had ever played in and lost. He played on undefeated teams at Hazelwood in high school and Bama had not lost a game up until that game that season.

Like someone else said, I hated PSU and that official for years. Seeing that again just renewed those feelings.

In 1986 or whenever PSU won the national championship, they lost one game that season. Bama beat them in Byrant Denny.

The 42-21 whipping Bama put on PSU in 1982 REMAINS the worst loss a team that went on to win a MNC has ever had.

Bryant 4-1 and 4-0 against Paterno

Then we went 4-4 against them from 1983-90

Paterno did have success in 86 and 90 "down there" but dead even series since 1982.

One of the reasons I resent Joe Pa is his interview in the 1986 SI where he was named Sportsman of the Year

He was quoted as saying that Coach Bryant stayed on 1 year too many and he should have retired after setting the record in 81. He said "he'd never do that."

Well, he's doing it right now. He can't make it through an entire game with out going for a bathroom break or three and is just a figurehead and has been for years-

If he'd come out and say the TRUTH- which is for certain guys (like Bryant/Paterno) it's simply in their blood to coach and stepping away is like giving up your life, I'd respect him more.

I know he's a good man and has done great things but I just have always been bitter about that.

Guess I need to get over it!!!! LOL

PSU actually won that game 23-3 in BDS. It was a beatdown and was not as close as the score indicated.

You're thinking of 1982 I believe.
