it was officially called unsportsmanlike conduct, whatever.

the point is, despite me hating all things barn, it was a crappy call.
so eventually the refs will call it on us for some trivial thing- (like GMac doing the phone call symbol in the endzone).

sec refs are notoriously inconsistent so cant they define excessive celebration more rigidly so refs have less of an opportunity to influence games whenever they feel like it?

I think he was called simply because so much attention was put on him following the UGA game, and I think it was to tell him that he better watch his Ps & Qs. Notice that he didn't seem to do the things to draw attention to himself after the call the way he has at other times. Bad call or not, I think it served its purpose in letting players know that foolishness that could lead to Hugh tempers was not going to be tolerated.

^^^^I agree, thats what me and my Pops was talking about after the penalty happened, it was a warning for Fairly (because of the UGA game), and to his credit he did play a clean game. I don't think that would have been called in any other game played.

Obviously it was a terrible call unless something quite unsavory/unsportsman like was said. It also popped in my head that it might be a result of the cumulative talk of 'dirty/unsportsman' conduct by big #90. What I do agree with is it's the officials job to keep the borderline stuff in check which is where Fairly's stuff has been. Mark Richt was right when you don't throw the flags this is what you get, the players self-policing at the end of the AU/GA game.

However to the point jumping around like a fool as all players do after a big sack isn't exactly sportsman like. It's just a bonehead call unless the ncaa decides to enforce it across the board, & I'm under no illusion that is what was going on here, just saying it as a point of discussion.

I expected the refs to keep Fairley on a short leash. This was their tap-on-the-shoulder to him. While I didn't agree with the call, I understand where the refs were coming from. They did NOT want to lose control of another game on national TV.

Agreed. The spotlight was on Fairley (his own fault). After that, I was waiting for a make-up call to come against a Bama player who showed any emotion after a good play.

When you've got a rep, oh well.

All I figured was it made up for all the non-calls on his late hits and stuff.

I've heard from people who should know that it was strictly what he said. If you look at the replay, the flag came out late, after he'd rotated towards #12. They'll hit your for blue language a lot quicker than prancing around...

I'd buy that were it not for the fact that the refs clearly had an "anything goes" attitude towards the entire game.

Spencer Tillman was still having a hissy fit about the call today.:rolleye2:
A Herbstreit/Desmond wannabe. Not worth listening to. Relatedly, I was in the post-game funk, but I could've sworn I heard him equate the last 13 days of Cam rumors to the Cuban Missle Crisis. Did I hear correctly?

Back on point, I do think the flag reigned Nick the Pile Driver in a bit. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of cheap shots by him relative to other big games they've played.

Yes, you did.

I was stunned at that one, too, esp. since our own head coach got drilled for a vague comparison of the ULM loss to 9/11.

You're probably right but at the time I was saying "the refs were giving him warning. We'll not tolerate more of your antics."

Hopefully GMac knows better than to do the phone call symbol in the endzone after seeing John Parker Wilson get flagged for it at LSU 2 years ago...

The call against Fairley looked bad but we don't know what he said which makes it a good call. I couldn't tell if the flag was in he air as he turned to say something or if it came after that. I did notice that neither team went overboard with celebrations after this.
