The timeline in this story is what makes it appear to be a non-issue to me. UA knew of the issue (for a fact) in December 2010. At that point we had lost 3 games and had a healthy Mark Ingram on the field. So there's no logical reason that we would have jeopardized the entire program to try and keep TR eligible for the capitol one bowl. Had this been in the beginning of the season, when we were ranked #1 and Ingram was injured, then maybe I would be concerned. But, as good as TR is, he isn’t worth putting the entire program at risk. Especially when you consider the talent we have, and especially the talent we had at the position while all this was going on.

Here is the problem with this story. Perception leads to action. The more press and outcry over anything rumor or fact will eventually cause actions to be taken. This story has forced UA to make statements and release information to the public that would have never seen the light of day if not for this article. Even after all is proved to be on the up and up, you don't win in situations like this, period. What I don't understand is why we continue to get involved in situations that allows others to perceive wrongdoing. Yes we are under a huge microscope and have to be extra careful, yet we seem to keep getting involved in theses type negative events. Of course some of the rules are stupid, but they are the rules, you have to deal with them as they exist. Don't get me wrong, I think UA is on top of the situation and more is being made out of nothing. Everyone has got to start making better choices, including the media. These type stories are only going to get worse in the years ahead.

Yeah, good luck with that ;)

In all seriousness, what are the players supposed to do? Ignore fans and the people that help make the University what it is? They can't do that. It is what it is.

As long as we're on top of the college football world, and as long as there is still a university in southwest Alabama named Auburn, this type of stuff will continue to happen. Their crazies will keep digging as will ours for dirt against them. You can't stop it. College football has become a field full of landmines for fans. You pull for your team and you hope for the best, but you keep your fingers crossed that you don't step on one of the 100's of landmines somewhere out in front of you.

Now, he's making a big deal out of getting death threats from Bama fans and he didn't get any from Auburn fans.

There is a good idea hidden in that sentence. Since we could never get Georgia to claim/accept the barners, let's move their campus closer to the Mississippi border. Maybe they'll take them off our hands. It's worth trying!

I think it's telling when Finebaum discounts it.
I hope not for the simple fact that he has discounted the Auburn stuff, too.

You sound like some of the people on 247 who keep going on about this. Bama found nothing wrong. Let it go. The only people who continue to harp on this are barners.
Says the man who's been here under a year. I'll continue discussing it because this is a discussion board. That's the whole purpose. I'm not going to stick my fingers in my ears and pretend like this isn't a troubling issue. I'm asking for clarification regarding this issue as well as discussing potential problems. I'm not being disrespectful or argumentative--I'm asking for information and providing my thoughts. If you don't like what I have to say, don't read it...it's really that simple.

This is an excellent point. I certainly don't think UA would have covered up anything at any stage of the investigation. It's more an issue of, "Could and would the NCAA deem a player ineligible for this nonsense?" I would like to think they wouldn't do that, but then I think back to the textbook issue. I have faith in UA compliance. I do not have faith in the NCAA or unscrupulous businessmen.

Ha, my fault... southeast. Bad form for someone with a degree in geography.

Travis and his AU cohorts are trying to assert that since Julio Jones has been photographed in ten different suits, something must be amiss. The implication is subtly racist, and unless there's a smoking gun out there, I don't think the NCAA gives a fig about what suit a player wears on game day.

Someone help me out with this - the Tuscaloosa News described T-Town Menswear as "high-end." I have my doubts. What brands does the store carry and how much are we looking at per suit?

(Travis and his idiot trolls also forget that the players can still apply for student loans on top of their scholarships, which may provide a decent amount of spending money.)

I can't and will not claim that I was a Major D1 college prospect or athlete. However, signing multiple items in a store while being photographed on several different occasions is not something that I would have personally felt was the "intent of the rule" allowing players to sign autographs for fans. But that's just my opinions. So the question then becomes what circumstances would exist for me to do the same. Is it a one time charity type thing that was approved by my School/NCAA? Does it just happen to be a store that I frequent and purchase items on a regular basis and I autograph a few items for fans every time I come in?

This picture helps negate the idea the players were getting paid. It does, however, show that the owner was/is using the memorabilia has promotion, which is against NCAA rules. The C&D letter would be the answer to that problem though.
And in response to said letter, current player memorabilia has reportedly been removed.

Done.

I will happily read the responses that you have received from at least 2 mods, telling you in so many words not to worry, and I will go stick my fingers in my ears saying "La la la, I can't hear you". I trust their judgment, and considering the source (them), versus Clay Travis, I can wash the sand out of my hair and ears later, feeling just fine.
