Did Steve Spurrier want the Alabama job before CNS was hired??

I posted this question on another thread, but could not get a definitive answer. Can anyone, who was familiar with the situation, give me a summary of whether or not Alabama was in talks w/Steve Spurrier or if he wanted the Alabama coaching job. I know this is an old topic but I'm really curious. I had a TON of respect for Spurrier when he was coaching @ Florida and during that time of uncertainty, I would have been happy if he would have come to Bama. At the time, I felt that CNS was a long shot because he was coaching Miami and the press would have eaten him alive(which they did). Anyway can someone give me insight on this situation??

Can't say for sure if SOS was actually a candidate for the job. At that time there were rumors, denials and sightings everywhere. I know he had taken a year off after his stint in the NFL and was available, but to say that Alabama officials talked or met with him was never clear. Sorry that is all I can remember of those dark days.

Then my girlfriend, now my wife were outside BDS by the steps of the walk of champions the afternoon before the IB 06 and we were talking to a few UA employees about the season and one of them told me it was Spurrier's job if he wanted it and a plane was going to be heading to USCE to pick him up. I am really glad we didn't get him.

I know he tried to go through some back channels to get a gauge on UA's interest and as Earle said there was none on Bama's side. I am sure that Coach Oliver had some info concerning CSS interest in the job and CSS did have real interest.

Spurrier rumors were exacerbated by his wife's attendance in a skybox during the Auburn game. As Earle said, no interest on UA's part. His actions in the late 90's early 2000's blew up any chance of being hired at UA

I always heard that Spurrier was going to accept the job provided he could hire Bill Oliver as his defensive coordinator and Mal said "no way".

But I have no real evidence to back that up, it was just the rumor at the time.

Alabama did talk to Steve and he could have had the job if he wanted it.

Steve said at the time thanks but no thanks.

Steve had been at South Carolina for two years when Mal talked to him he told him he couldn't leave.

He said if Alabama had came calling two years early he would have loved to have the job.

Steve talked very open about this in the months after we got CNS.

Spurrier: No interest in Alabama job

In an effort to tamp out rumors, South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier gave a written release today to the media. Spurrier said he has no interest in the Alabama head coach job, referring to himself as "a South Carolina coach".

"I have no intention of leaving South Carolina," Spurrier said Monday in a written release. "It's always flattering when a South Carolina coach is rumored for these big time programs. This one will die down in two or three days, too."

UPDATE
Spurrier told his team on Thursday (Nov 30) that they are "stuck with him".

Spurrier met with the team Thursday in a previously scheduled closed-door meeting. A source close to the team told News19's Matt Barrie that Spurrier told the players that he came to Columbia, "to do things that had never been done before, including winning an SEC title," and that he's "not leaving until that's done."
He reportedly jokingly told them, "some of you might not like me, but you're stuck with me."

You sir are correct RTR17! Lou Holtz sold CSS on South Carolina and he pretty much decided that he'd retire at USC.

My own personal interpretation is that he wanted to use Bama's interest to either:
1) Take the Bama job
2) leverage a better contract with his current employer

whichever would have worked out better for him at the time.

How serious our interest at the time was, I really have no idea.

Again, no interest was shown on our side...

Was there interest ? Yes . Was it mutual ? Briefly . Some will say no , but those are also usually the same ones who denied Spurrier was even contacted at the time and things had started to leak out . The story I stick with is the same one which eventually became public knowledge - 1 - Spurrier was contacted by a "representative" . - 2- He was flattered over the possibility , but suggested Alabama contact Bob Stoops instead . - 3- The following year he made a public statement confirming #'s 1 and 2 then stated , "Gosh , I mean had it been two years earlier I would've crawled to Tuscaloosa ." .

BamainBoston confirms what I have heard through other sources. Spurrier realized that he could not leave USCe without causing irreparable damage to his reputation...the press would have eaten him alive from day 1.
