Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for numerous sexual assaults of minors

you've got to remember these guys are as isolated as a big university can be. we're talking 1.5 hours from the nearest town over 50k, harrisburg, which isn't exactly media central...just PA govt central

these guys walk around with an aura of being untouchable as they hold the university in the palm of their hand and, by connection, the economy of Central PA in their hand. They answer to no one and were likely not taking this seriously even after Sandusky's arrest. I think the water got splashed on their face either late Monday or early Tuesday leading to the canceling of the 12:30 press conference and having Joe not participate in the big 10 call.

I'm being 100% honest when I say that these guys (mcqueary, joe pa, spanier, the AD, the vp of finance that runs the campus police) did not understand and possible STILL don't understand the grave nature of their actions (or inaction i should say).

Joe is an egomaniac bordering on hitler and stalin so I'm not surprised he's walking around business as usual fully intending to coach on saturday. i am surprised that mike mcqueary hasn't stepped down and this can only be because spanier and joe pa are telling him not to.

btw, mcqueary's dad emailed the local sports show in pittsburgh yesterday saying that his son is very distraught but believes he did the correct thing in 2002 by escalating what he witnessed through the proper channel (joe pa then the AD). there is still no accountability even as the victim count rises above 20!

the only way to change the culture (and they do put the CULT in culture) at Penn State is to disband the football program for a few years and start from scratch.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

I can see the GA, but not Paterno. I mean, he had a moral responsibility, but basically he is hearing information second hand about a possible crime. I don't know that he has any responsibility at that point, at least legally.
I know it's hard for you legal eagles to take the moral responsibility out of things at times. So while you may be right about the situation in its legal tense, your thoughts are almost reprehensible to anyone outside of your profession. .

I shudder to think, that if you were to walk in on what the GA walked in on, that you would hang your hat on passing the buck. And it seems to me, that everyone involved in this sordid affair is trying to pass the buck. Sorry if that offends.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

Cowards hiding behind protocol?

Easy to pass the buck and absolve responsibility when one hides behind institutional walls.

PSU administration is sick to the core. JoePa led the parade.

It took high school officials to finally blow the whistle on the evil machinations from the fortress on the hill.

This whole affair is disgusting.
THIS...is exactly what was/is going on.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

I think these are all very reasonable questions. I don't understand why in this day and age we are ready to burn people at the stake the day after we learn vague facts about possible misdeeds.

Why you ask? Because protection of our children the most important thing we can do. It doesn't seem like the facts are vague at all.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

And why did he stay at PSU? Did greed outweigh his sense of morality? Did he receive promotions and pay raises to buy his silence?
Makes one wonder, especially when Sandusky was informed in 1999 - shortly after the first reports of his actions surfaced - that he no longer had a future with the State Penn coaching staff...

This.

And this supposed tough guy football coach, Mike McQueary, didn't even have the stones to stop what he thought was sexual molestation of a child? What kind of coward could walk away and not stop that?

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

I still just cannot fathom a grown man (McQueary) walking in on something like that and being able to not physically do anything to Sandusky... Its just unfathomable that he could just walk away.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

PSU and Joe Pa had multi chances to make this right, to separate themselves from Sandusky. Don't kid yourself, Joe Pa runs PSU, he actually threw the university president out of his house a few years back because he wanted to talk to Joe about retirement. Joe made a horrible choice, he protected a friend of many years without really knowing him.

There will be tens if not hundreds of law suits against PSU over this.

AP source: #PennSt football coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at end of the season -rr

In the state of Texas, school employees are required by law to notify school officials AND call CPS (child protective services), period. I have never had to do it, I pray I never have to do it, but if I suspected a student was abused or was the abuser, I will be making a phone call to save a life and keep my job.

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

The arrogance out of Paterno right now is revolting. This is from his statement: (http://www.twitlonger.com/show/e3btvp)

Paterno: "At this moment, the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status."

"With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

If Penn State lets him coach this week, I hope they catch just another wave of hell.

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

As some are saying, that's wishful thinking on his part. If the Big 10 has one iota of credibility, they'd suspend him for the rest of the year.

I agree, maybe they were just floating a "balloon"..... he should go no matter his past record/contributions.

Time will tell what really occurred. However, I think its quite sad that his career will end like this.
