Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (will miss first half vs Rice)

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

No, they still serve a purpose, they just dont do it as well as they should. They need a severe shakeup.
I don't think Tidewater is advocating 'anarchy', but I agree the NCAA is too far gone. The system needs an overhaul...

Re: Manziel Expected "To be the starting quarterback against Rice"

I don't see why he wouldn't. As the College Football Live crew said on their episode last night, unless they have concrete evidence he took money then this is nothing more than another Cam Newton situation. If they can't show he took money then he can and should play.

I agree. And now with their Eli Gold saying this, it appears he will play until they find a money transaction.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

the biggest problem the NCAA has is that it encompasses all of intercollegiate athletics...and each sport has different rules and regulations...which makes it very difficult to "rule them all"

perfect example is how a young man can sign with a professional baseball team and play baseball...but still have eligibility in football...while at the same time if a football player decides to run track in the spring/summer his football scholarship counts as a track scholarship as well...taking a scholarship away from the track team

sure the situations are different...but neither one really makes sense...and the NCAA created both rules

I wonder if the long term goal will be to have each sport operate under its own set of rules and guidelines apart from the NCAA. The only thing keeping that from happening right now is probably Title IX...but I don't want to go there.

The problem is, that a money trail does not matter according to ncaa rules. If he signed them knowing they would be sold, then he's in violation. But I agree that, like Newton, the "I didn't know" excuse will rule the day.

This is what I thought all along. I had no doubt that he would play. This will work even more in our favor, since I am sure he is now even more cocky than before.

Then, dadgummit, just throw the whole rule book right out of the window. That has opened the door for paying anyone connected with getting a student to sign with any college as long as they don't mention it to the student. "Hey father, where did you get that new Mercedes". "Oh, Son, I just found a lottery ticket, and also, I'm going to need your help in moving into our new house, and after that, will you help me get my new boat into the lake. And don't forget, we're going to Hawaii right after you sign your Commitment papers next year".
"Oh, great father, we are so fortuitous that you have found a really big lottery ticket".
"Yes Son, we are. I just happened to find it right after that nice recruiter from **********
left the other day".
Yes, I am being ridiculous, but so is the NCAA and their stupid, inconsistent rules enforcement. IMO, after observing what has transpired throughout this whole incident, the NCAA should tell JFF to just go ahead and concentrate on being drafted next year as his CFB playing days are over. But that's not where the $$$ is, is it.
Thank you Cecil Newtown, and now JFF for exposing, and making a total fool out of, the NCAA.

Roll Tide, Roll...A'ight!

Anarchy is so fun though! Seriously, the best way to make true revolutionary change is with a true revolution.

Oh I agree. But how long has it been since the NCAA has actually adhered to their own rules? They set a bad precedence with the $cam Newton case that has superseded the actual rule on the books.

Re: Manziel Expected "To be the starting quarterback against Rice"

In my humble opinion that 20 years from now, when we look back, the Cam Newton affair will be seen as the deal that broke the NCAA.

Some were saying the same about the Albert Means case. I remember my grandmother telling my dad she read an op-ed in the Chattanooga paper about tapes of Phil Fulmer telling someone he had to take down Alabama and those tapes would destroy the NCAA within a year. That was about 10 years ago.

Makes me wonder if the Alabama Athletic Department shouldn't re-claim all those forfeited and vacated wins. I mean, why not? If the NCAA objects we can just threaten a law suit.

I believe those drums are already beating - the fact that we've recently heard the commissioner from a major conference publicly floating the possibility means the discussions have already begun...

Sounds good to me!

Hearing that NCAA is doing all it can to inform A&M of its 'recommendation' ASAP...Aggie coaches are in an incredibly tough spot w/game prep

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

I'm hearing rumblings that A&M expects to hear the NCAA recommendations tomorrow or Thursday, but who really knows...

With the NCAA, it would be hard to know whether they made a recommendation in good faith that would get them out of the jam, or if they were giving bad advice to basically set up aTm for the hammer a little later.

Re: Manziel Expected "To be the starting quarterback against Rice"

IMO, aTm is being foolish. They need to give the NCAA a way out. The best way to do that is to voluntarily suspend Manziel for the first two games of the season for signing autographs for brokers who intended to profit from those signings. They do not need to admit to anything else, and the NCAA would likely accept that punishment and move on down the road. The NCAA does not want to punish Manziel, but they are being painted into a corner.
