Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (will miss first half vs Rice)

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (expected to start against Rice)

In a very odd way, it helps A&M. A&M gets to give the reigns of the offense to a backup (true freshman Kenny Hill) to start and get some reps in.
What a bunch of baloney. It helps A&M look crooked, which they are.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (expected to start against Rice)

Listening to the radio, I'm not sure which is the bigger butt of the jokes, the NCAA or aTm.

aTm has released a statement explaining they will now suggest to their players that if they are asked to sign a bunch of stuff for one person, that just might be a red flag. (No, that's not a joke, that's actually what they have promised to do to correct things.)

edit:

With us riding high and feeling real good about the team, we can laugh at this pitiful deal.

But I can't imagine how upset this would make me if we were still floundering around, given what we've been subjected to by the NCAA.

The only surprise is the 1/2 game suspension. The NCAA can't help looking ridiculous, but aTm looks no less by suspending him at all. The only question I have left in this matter is whether any "reasonable" Aggie fan truthfully believes that JFF autographed thousands of memorabilia for free? Any visiting Ags care to respond?

Otherwise, let's play football.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (expected to start against Rice)

the NCAA said "Oh, noes!! Common sense says that JFF got money or some other consideration, but we don't have hard evidence (not that that has EVER stopped us before). If we don't punish him, we'll be subjected to even more ridicule (not that that has EVER stopped us before). If he's suspended for the Bama game, the networks will have us kneecapped. Maybe just two game? No, those two games are prime stat-padding games, critical to his chances for winning another Heisman; if we do that, he's likely to sic his daddy's lawyers on us. A half-game suspension--hey, Meyer suspended a player for a half for eye-gouging, and that's bad. We'll do that! We can say we did something, but since he is unlikely to play the full game, we really did nothing. Yay us!"

The NCAA at its most spineless.

If I am a star player I am reaching out to these dealers and signing all they want if the only penalty is a half game. The NCAA just made it a lot harder to police this crap. Imagine Mr. Big shot booster: "Mr. Broker, player X, the top recruit in the nation is looking at my school, how much will you give me if he signs 100 items before every game?... Oh, $100K, great..." Now big shot booster befriends someone who the player knew before 8th grade and offers him the money to get his buddy to sign.

broker pays booster, booster pays the friend, friend pays the recruit. No issue regarding payment since the player didn't know he was bought, Cam rule. Stud player knows most he will get is a half game suspension, Johnny rule. AU, Ole Sis and aTm probably have already updated their recruiting manuals...

Again......[yawn]......

I went to A&M and believe he got paid, I also think that the 1/2 game suspension is a joke along with the NCAA. Not trying to defend A&M at all, but it looks like we're just going along with their recommendation of suspension. Having said that, I'd of been fine if he got suspended for the rest of his amateur career.

In fairness to Urban, that player only gouged on one eye. ;)

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (expected to start against Rice)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but under the "rules" in question, isn't he ineligible if he did get compensation, in which case he should be out for the season, or innocent if he didn't, which means he should not be suspended at all?

If he did nothing wrong, why is he suspended? If he did something wrong, why is he playing? I guess, deep down, we all know the answers.

9/14 can't come soon enough... As someone posted earlier, it will either be the best payback ever, or the most disappointing loss ever.

ESPN reporters don't like to be called liars or made fools of. This may not be over until Johnny is long gone - but I think this is far from over for aTm. There were apparently plenty of witnesses to a few of these signings and ESPN is not above paying some of them to talk. Nothing may ever come of it from a punishment perspective but I suspect ESPN may decide to make aTm look as bad as they possibly can on this deal.

You can't use logic in understanding what the NCAA does.

My best guess is that Mark Emmert decided he didn't want to deprive his buddy Saban of the chance to teach Johnny a lesson, and this was the easiest way he could come up with to get there.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (expected to start against Rice)

I know he did it. You guys know he did it. But seriously and honestly. If there's no proof then he shouldn't have been suspended at all.
I'm sure we have several attorney's in this forum who'll verify--If you don't have verifiable proof then you pretty much don't have a case.

Mighty, what about the honor code? Why aren't "True Aggies", not the sidewalk fan, demanding he be booted for violation of the honor code? Aggies don't LIE, cheat or steal.... I think we can all agree he lied, and cheated by taking the money. My wife tells me the honor code means something but, apparently not to Sumlin, Hyman, JFF, or Sharp... Thoughts???

I always hoped it was going to be 2 games, but also knowing that wasn't enough...

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (expected to start against Rice)

Our guys didn't "sell" any textbooks. There was a flaw in the system which allowed them extra textbooks which they loaned to friends. Yeah, that was a competitive disadvantage.

It was even an advantage the regular students couldn't take advantage of. My friends with books scholarships would do the same thing.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA (expected to start against Rice)

One time at our school, we figured out that the Coke machine would give you 50 cents in quarters, and two drinks if you put a Canadian quarter in it (I think it was anything roughly the size of a quarter that wasn't, I think I used some Putt Putt tokens to).

So, a few of us would put one in at lunch, get the 50 cents and a couple of drinks. Technically it was stealing, technically it was wrong. But, none of us went far with it, honestly I didn't usually have lunch, so a putt putt token provided me something to eat and drink. I shouldn't have done it, but it was a manipulation of the rules so to speak. That's what the textbooks thing reminds me of. They figured out a way around the restrictions, they took advantage of it. It was wrong, but honestly it doesn't make much sense that it became an NCAA issue at all. It wasn't some special thing rigged for athletes, it just so happened that athletes knew how to do it. It shouldn't ever have been treated different than if they'd shoplifted or something.

This autograph thing though, that's a blatant violation of amateurism. I guess the thousand dollar autograph can replace the hundred dollar handshake now. Somehow though, it's much much worse to get free textbooks.

Wow, The NCAA continues to look incredibly inept!
