What is it with Vols and wanting to hurt AJ?

Gotta have a good week of practice culminating with a sharp game on Saturday. Tennessee is getting better and turned around what seemingly was a season on a tailspin starting with Oregon's fireworks show. They're not as bad as their record. Tennessee has a quality OL, a good back, decent young athletes at WR, and a scheme that protects their QB from having to shoulder the whole load. Their defense has played better than it had in the entirety of the Dooley era.

An improving, year-one program in a big rivalry game deserves our full attention. This weekend demonstrated looking forward is nothing we should be doing with the Vols.

Bama will win, but not by that large a margin. We don't play HUNH.

I've watched every game the Vols have played this year. They have made steady improvement and the team Oregon beat is not the same team Bama will be playing, just like yesterday's Bama team is much improved over the team that beat aTm in the third week of the season. I wouldn't over emphasize the only common opponent thing too much.

For any Bama fan living in Tennessee, this is by far the biggest game of the year EVERY year. Vol fans live to make Bama fans miserable after a loss to UT. My crimson flag is flying.

I think you can throw out Tennessee as a way to gauge them as an opponent. They've gotten better and Oregon is pretty good at detonating on teams that are not confident and balanced in what they do offensively. Tennessee isn't an explosive offense but they are coherent now. They also took Oregon rocking their defense on the chin and got much better as a unit. Factoring in that this is a rivalry game, there is no reason to believe Tennessee won't put together a good game against us. I'm expecting something closer than the majority of UT games recently.

I'm not too familiar with them since we rarely play them. The thing that stuck out to me was the level of trash talk and videos saying how they were going to come into Oregon and 'whip us' I was also surprised by their willingness to eat crow and make apology videos when they were wrong. At least that's how they acted toward us.

Tennessee fans are cocksure like most traditional programs even when they're on a down swing. Oregon was a team they wanted no part of but their fans didn't realize it I guess. There was just no way that early in the season in the first year of their program with a new QB and young receivers that they were going to score with Oregon. They've gotten better but if they played Oregon again it would still be something similar.

Tennessee's biggest improvement is in the confidence department. They knew they'd lose to Oregon and then played as badly as you can against Florida. They nearly lost to South Alabama after that.

Then they have UGA all they could handle. It turns out that giving a 4-3 UGA team a game isn't so hard after all. UT didn't know that. Now they beat USC. Good for them.

I will be very surprised if Bama doesn't win by 21+. This UT team won't know what to do when they're down 14-0 in Tuscaloosa before they can blink. Their defense won't stop us and you can't hide a bad QB forever.

The final score in this game all depends on how Tennessee comes out the gate. Their confidence is extremely high right now, if they play well in the first quarter we might see them stick around til the 3rd. If beat the confidence out of them on the first few drives I could see the game ending 45-3.

Spent almost 30 years in East Tennessee. It's a beautiful part of the state if it weren't for Viles fans who think their program was and is superior to Alabama's. Many revere Phat Phil as a devoted coach done wrong. After he retires from the NFL, statues of Peyton Manning will be put in place in front of TN county courthouses to replace Confederate soldiers or war memorials. There's a reason the Rammer Jammer cheer was created by Bama just for the Tennessee game some 80 years ago. There's been bad blood between the two teams for decades.

UcheaT is a different team than they were in that 1st game. Alabama has a different philosophy than Oregone. Results don't matter. The process is what matters. Resistance is futile.

Thanks for taking the time to fill me in on the history of bad blood between your two schools. We highly dislike UW and hate USC (well, doesn't everyone hate them?), but I wouldn't want our guys to try to injure their players. It's rotten when people want to injure the other team's players. As we all know one key player out with an injury can ruin an entire season. Win clean or go home. A rivalry game is always tougher. Is your fanbase's hate for Tennessee greater than their dislike for Auburn? I thought I read somewhere they tried to kill your school's ancient tree? Was that you all or a different team?
You have no idea about the bad blood here. Ucheat is hated as much, if not more than Allbarn. And playing dirty is their game.

As far as the tree thing...I think you've been told several times about this so I'm not sure if you are being serious or not. Look it up if you are so interested in it. As it is you are moving beyond ignorance by bringing it up over and over.

It would give me great pleasure to see Alabama deflate the confidence balloon that TN has inflated. I agree they are playing hard for 4 quarters now. I truly want us to make them quit.

Hey man, np on the lack of inner-conference rivalries. I love Alabama, but was actually until tonight still guilty of not really KNOWING where all the hatred stemmed from. Let me fill you in on some highlights:

-We've played Tennessee since 1901, meaning we've actually played them longer than our in-state rivals Auburn (we went like 40 years without playing them cause of some dispute.)

-Coach "Bear" Bryant (I'm sure you've heard of him) played against Tennessee with a broken leg (shin bone) due to sheer unabashed hatred. (actual articles online regarding this, how the AD showed the x-rays to media to prove it)

-Goosetree, the head trainer back in 50's, started the tradition of handing out cigars to the team (bama) after beating Tenn. The ncaa banned it, as it was a gift that wasn't allowed, and a tobacco product or something to that effect. Now, each player buys his own (on both teams as they both celebrate if they win with cigars). So if you watch the game, I assure you at the end you'll see a ton of players on one side or the other with cigars. This is the ONLY game in either teams season where they do this.

-"the third saturday" in october. For almost 90 years the game was traditionally played on the third saturday in october, but in 92 when we started the conference split/championship game that ended for the most part. Every now and again we get to do it, but sadly, it's less seldom - so it's actually celebrated now when it does happen.

-finally, Coach Fulmer, a previous coach of theirs during the 90s and 2000s was apparently credited in the NCAA investigation that got bama sanctioned around 2005. It wasn't that bama fans disagreed that we were doing wrong, it was that many suspected the Vols indiscretions were overlooked as a trade off for fulmers testimony (or something to that effect).

For many younger fans, it's been hard to understand this rivalry without knowing more of the history, but with some indepth searching, it becomes easier and easier to see how these border states genuinely want to beat the crap out of one another both on and off the field.
