Changing the name of the Washington Redskins

According to this article the term "Redskin" is a translation from a word the Indians came up with to distinguish themselves from the white man. I'm not sure of the credibility of this particular article.

However, Colin Cowherd had a historian on his show a few months ago to discuss the origin of the term. The term (according to the historian) was created by the Indians themselves and not by the white man. So if any of the Indians are "offended" by the term then they need to blame their ancestors.

I suspect that those who view it as a slur are either: (1) ignorant of history or (2) upset by the descriptive adjectives that later came to be placed in front of the "redskins" word. Given the historical record, the word itself is not a slur.

As a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, I have a lot to say about this but I'm at work now.

But here it is in slogan form: if the plight of the Native American truly bothers you then give them the land back rather than empty gestures like this.

If the media is so opposed to the name "Redskins", why do they announce the games and say "Washington Redskins"? Why don't they just say that the game today is between the New England Patriots (or whatever team) vs that team from Washington, D.C. The D.C. team did this or it did that. That great run or that awesome tackle was made by a D.C.er.

Originally I thought a name change to the Washington Tyrants would be appropriate.
Now I think the Washington Reds would be better. It somewhat keeps the tradition of the current name but also adds in the current reality: From Native American beginnings to a Communist present.
