i really believe this hire is the right one for bama. i think he is a solid offensive coordinator, and outstanding recruiter. he really did a great job at tenn in his brief tenure. i could not believe the improvement in qb compton at tenn after being the 3d string qb the season before. he had a solid rush game, and as some have said utilized the tight end to perfection. i was glad to see him go, because i really believe he would have been near the top in the near future with his recruiting classes. you saw what happened after he was gone, even with a big time program. he could make oj howard an all american and improve our young qbs to a higher level. we have excellent receivers to work with. we just need to get the off line better on the ends.

Well..... I'm taking a "wait n' see" stance on this one. I know he's a great offensive mind but this wasn't what I expected. Just gotta trust in CNS for now. Hopefully he's taken his lumps and matured along the way.

When someone who has 4 rings comes out and says it a bad idea, then I will listen, until that point I will trust the King. RTR

Looking back to his time at USC, his offense averages are below.

2005 - 50.0 PPG - 580.3 YPG
2006 - 30.3 PPG - 387.9 YPG
2010 - 31.0 PPG - 431.5 YPG
2011 - 35.8 PPG - 456.8 YPG
2012 - 34.2 PPG - 451.9 YPG

In his one year in the SEC at Tennessee, the numbers are below.
2009 - 30.6 PPG - 395.4 YPG

His numbers at Tennessee was only slightly less than our's (31.7 PPG - 413.8) with Jonathan Crompton at QB in a year we had Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, Julio Jones, and Greg MecElroy. He had a lot of defensive scores that year added to PPG as well.

I'd argue that he'll have talent similiar to his 2005 USC team here. His 2006 year at USC was after losing Reggie Bush, Matt Leinhart, and LenDale White. They also lost their starting TE, and 3 O linemen to to draft after 2005.

Totally agree. Anyone arguing with any decision Coach Saban makes in regard to his team is truly bucking the odds...

I hope to God we don't wind up regretting this.

Don't be taken in by the "he did this well at USC." It was Norm Chow, not Kiffin, who did that. Kiffin's first year as an OC was 2005, when the Leinart-Bush-White juggernaut was already in place. Keep in mind he's the same guy who only got nine points on UCLA's terrible defense in 2006 that cost the Trojans a shot at Ohio State.
Its worth noting that none of Norm Chow's offenses came close to the 2005 team. The 2004 team averaged 36.8 PPG - 442 YPC vs 50.0 PPG and 580.3 YPG for the 2005 team. USC's 2006 wasn't near as impressive, but they replaced Matt Leinhart, Reggie Bush, LenDale White, 3 OL, and their starting TE. (7 starters total)

I've talked trash about Lane Kiffin as much as anyone, but I am actually happy with this hire. Kiffin knows offense...he knows QB's...and he knows recruiting....all good things for Bama.

I think Kiffin was humbled a bit by the way he was dismissed from USC. I think he is here wanting to learn from Saban how to be a head coach. Saban's media blackout for coordinators will allow him to stay behind the scenes and worry about coaching.

I'm curious how the Kiffin attitude will affect the team. My perspective from following him in the news is that he is obnoxious, but I've never met the man...that could certainly be wrong.

Maybe being in Tuscaloosa, Kiffin will be exposed to some class and perhaps a little will rub off on him.

If you've ever been around someone clearly in over their head, there's a lot of ways they respond. Sometimes they just run away, sometimes they try their hardest and break under the strain, and sometimes they act out a lot. It seems Kiffin did the latter. He wasn't the miserable failure some make him out to be, he was just annoying, and entitled, but nothing he did indicated he can't be a good position coach, everything he did called his leadership into question and he's not Alabama's leader.

If all he has to do is recruit and run the offense, I imagine he'll do a fine job of both.

There is one aspect of Coach Saban' s football program that has been a constant, is when a distraction arises within the football program, as Barney Fyffe would say, Coach Saban "Nips It In The Bud" as soon as it happens..If Kiffin comes in & causes trouble from the get go, Coach Saban will take out the trash before it disrupts the team..

Kiffin needs Bama right now, way more than we need Kiffin, so I suspect Kiffin knows his role, and will stay quite as Coach Saban helps him to rebuild his image within the world of college football..Kiffin is getting a 2nd chance most folks can only dream about..So I actually think we're going to proud he's part of our football family when it's all said and done..
