Anybody else find it odd that Kirby Smart's name hasn't come up?

Well, I have a hunch about it. Kirby Smart will be our next HC, and Saban is grooming him to take the spot, if he will just be patient and learn from the Jedi Master. Smart knows this so he is keeping his powder dry and his mouth shut.

There. That's my stab at it. What say you?
I don't see this at all. I think Kirby is an outstanding DC, but I think he is going to have to prove himself as a head coach before he is named head football coach at Alabama. Considering where our program is I just don't see us hiring a career assistant as our head football coach when CNS leaves or retires.

I don't think he will be hot again unless we have a defense like 2009 or 2011 again. He may have missed the boat as far as top-notch head coaching gigs go unless we roll out another great defense. I wonder if many people have begun to only see him as a puppet of Saban instead of some type of innovator. When people see OU run up and down the field on your defense, your reputation takes a bit of a hit.[/QUOTE]

This in bold^^^^^^!

Yeah, because it sure ruined Will Muschamp's reputation when Mark and Trent run roughshod over Texas' #1 ranked run defense in the BCSNCG. He was punished by getting the HC job at Florida...

Guys, seriously, a few games doesn't define a guy's reputation.

Not ruining a reputation but a "bit of a hit" takes some of the luster off of being a "super star". I am still glad we have Coach Smart and hope he finds some answers to get us back the defenses of 2009 and 2011. It puzzles me that there seems to be all this interest to change the offense. When are we going to adapt to what is whipping our butts on the defensive side of the ball?

Recruiting seems to suggest that we are working on it, but its not a quick fix. OTOH, the SEC has seen a shift in the QB play and different offensive schemes in recent years. We have played against NFL caliber QB's like Aaron Murray, Mettenberger, and tremendous athletes like Manziel and Nick Marshall in the last 2 years where were playing Jordan Jefferson, Barrett Trotter, and Jarrett Lee, and Chris Todd in 2011 and 2009.

Our defense was not the only defense in SEC to struggle this year. In fact, we still had by far the best statistical defense in the SEC this year. I think CNS realizes that this is the new norm, and you are going to have to score some serious points at times to beat people. I don't like that style of football, but I'm also glad see that CNS isn't staying in the mindset that you can shut people out and win strictly with defense. In fact, I'll go as far to say that if CNS wasn't concerned with getting more offensive production at this point, I'd be worried the game was maybe passing him by.

It goes without saying that CNS is going to be doing everything he can to figure out and slow these offenses, but I'm also gald he sees the need to boost the offense as well. I think its another example of why is the best there is right now.

Very good points. Let's all hope that CNS and CKS have a good look in the mirror and rededicate themselves to motivating these 5 stars to play with 5 star hearts. I got the sense that some were playing with 2 star hearts.

I don't think anyone is saying that. CKS is well -respected in the coaching community, we all know that. But, perceptively at least, when your defense is out to lunch or plain just getting beat in the three biggest games of the year, your name is just not going to be at the top of everyone"s list that's looking for a HC, especially when you consider the high standards that have been set here. Maybe last year or in 2011 that was the case, but not this year.

KS will have to be a head coach somewhere else before he could be head coach at Alabama.

There will be no more OJT for the head coach in T Town.

It's possible KS may just be a DC for life ala Mickey Andrews.

Coaching is all about what have you done for me lately. Lately, the defense hasn't looked too good.

We have really become a spoiled bunch. Our defense hasn't been too good lately? Really? Come on. How are we defining lately? We have consistently ranked been in the top 5 defenses for the past 5 years. Have we struggled against HUNH offenses? Yes, but most defenses do, that is why they run it.

We knew going into the season that we did not have as much depth and proven talent on defense that we have has in previous years. The injuries, some season ending, did not help either. This was a year when long, sustained drives on offense would have helped in two ways: our defense would not get worn down and the HUNH offenses would be on the sidelines. This did not happen and our weaknesses were exposed. I am confident that CNS saw the same problems that we did and will do everything he can to correct them.

Not spoiled at all, but by the standard that has been set our defense has struggled. It happens to every team at some point. Like it or not that's how it is in coaching. Fans and the media act like you forget how to coach. That's what happened to CKS. His name was really hot, now not so much because the defense struggled at times this past year.

I agree that the defense struggled at times during the year. I was taking exception to the notion that our defense hasn't been too good lately.

Overall this year the defense was not up to the standard we are used to. The last two games especially left a bad perception nationally and honestly they didn't play good. That's the truth. I'm not spoiled, I know it happens at times and we'll be fine but that's the reason CKS name is not hot. That's what this thread is about.

The truth is, we don't know that. Kirby did interviews for the last few year, which means his agent was putting his name out there for other jobs. That may not be happening this year. The fact is, we just don't know. There is only one HC job opening in the SEC this year, whereas there were several last year. I'd guess - no, I'd guarantee - that if Kirby wanted to interview for Vandy, he would get an interview.

Proof is in the pudding. The last several years CKS name was everywhere you turned this time of the year, this year it's not. The defense issues is not the only reason. Names get hot, then go cold for a while. It's just the way it works. Plus I think CKS is very smart when it comes to where he wants to go if he wants to take that next step.

And you don't think an agent putting names out there and Kirby actually taking interviews has anything to do with that?

A lot of people feel this Vandy thing is a real possibly, FWIW. ( I don't think it is, personally)
