New coach search...

I wonder if that's how CBB will put it to Marshall? 'look dude, we will pay you four MILLION freakin' dollars to come here and all we want is for you to finish second in the league'? :)

I think that most people would be interested in a job like that.

rtr

As long as Calipari is doing what he's doing at Kentucky, where else do you expect to finish on a consistent basis? Second in this league with good runs in the tournament is not a bad basketball program.

Speaking of Forde, you'd think that enough mediots would have gotten their noses bloodied by saying Saban would never come here that they'd show a little more caution before betting against Bama. Hell, Scabs was leading a chorus that Grant would never come...

His tune changed this time around. Link

The more you talk to people who know Gregg Marshall, the easier it is to believe that the only game he's playing in Cleveland is Notre Dame tonight in the Sweet 16.

If Marshall says he's happy at Wichita State, he's not playing games with his employer. If he says he'll listen when his season ends if Alabama makes an offer, he's not playing games with Alabama.

Marshall may or may not be the next Alabama basketball coach, but it sounds like it would be out of character for him to play games with Bill Battle.

Exactly. He also predicted that Bama would have a disastrous 2014 season and would not even finish in the top 3 of the west. :conf3:

Has anyone been keeping up with WSU message boards?

No but I have read where one of their boards is reporting that the media in Wichita has been alerted of a possible news conference around noon today. I would think that if Marshall was leaving the news would come from the Bama side so I'm not sure what to think about this. There is no confirmation that the press conference has anything to do with Marshall, perhaps the Koch brothers have donated millions to build a new building and they are making that announcement today. Could be anything or it could be nothing.

If I had to list criteria for success, I think I would go:
1. Get to the tournament about every year.
2. Compete for the SEC title (regular season or tournament) most years.
3. Peak in March.

Calipari has only won the SEC three times in his six years, so it's not like everyone else is just playing for #2. But between Calipari and Donovan, no one else has really maintained a presence at the top. We should at least strive to be a third team there at the top. If we did, we'd probably end up being a Sweet Sixteen team more often than not.

from 'shockerfan' on WS message board: "Don't want to get unto it. Today at noon, keep your eyes on the news."

I just want a program that has a legitimate shot at the sweet 16 almost every year. Build a program that does that and we will win our share of SEC championships. Every once in awhile we may break through and get to the elite 8 and perhaps even a final 4. Once you make it to that level it depends on a variety of factors but you have put yourself in a position to compete for a national championship. We may never be at UK's level but UK has been up and down for the past 30 years similar to our football program. When they are up they are competing for the national championship. When they are down they are still pretty good but other schools have had some good runs (e.g. Bama in the mid-to-late 80's).

TO ME and only TO ME it sounds like it is an announcement he is leaving. PERHAPS I am misinterpreting and it will be him staying. That is the part I am not sure. I don't know for SURE if it is good news or bad news. Just that as of right now there is something planned for noon.

IF nothing comes of it I will go into detail because that would mean something changed.

Sorry I can't give you more. But either way it sounds like we will know today
I'm not saying you're wrong, but if you're right this is about the best kept secret amongst 650K people that humanity has ever seen. You broke this news - what - an hour ago, and you're still the lone drum beat.

From Cecil... Alabama AD Bill Battle to meet with Gregg Marshall in Wichita

University of Alabama athletics director Bill Battle will travel to Wichita today to meet with Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall, the top candidate for the vacant Crimson Tide basketball coaching job.

The Alabama position has been vacant since Anthony Grant was fired on March 15. UA officials have considered Marshall as the top candidate to replace Grant throughout the process and have believed there was reciprocal interest throughout, even after the head coaching job at the University of Texas also became vacant. Texas is reportedly considering several candidates to replace Rick Barnes, including Marshall.

UA is expected to make a financial offer to Marshall that would make him one of the nation's Top 10 highest-paid basketball coaches. The deal would be expected to exceed the $3.4 million annually that Steve Alford received for moving from New Mexico to UCLA in 2013.

That certainly could be the case. However, it might not necessarily be a press conference that is scheduled.

True, it could be an announcement that UA has asked permission to speak with Marshall. Per Cecil's tweet, Battle is meeting with Marshall today. That sounds like very good new to me. :-)

@_DCReeves The intrigue of Bill Battle heading to Wichita is that AD’s don’t get on planes to have their first conversation with a potential hire.

Had a friend me that lives in the Kansas City market text saying that media has been notified of a possible press conference today (afternoon). (not confirmed)

I hope Battle already knew the answer to the question before he got on the plane....
