New coach search...

You know just looking around at other programs Jay Wright has an impressive resume at Villanova. He might be someone to take a look at!

Another example. He'd go to the pros or to a marquee Bball school which Villanova is much more so than an AL. UK, Duke, UNC, Indiana etc. would get to interview a Jay Wright.

Oh and he's the 12th highest paid coach already.

Pro ball can be very taxing. 82 games plus playoffs and preseason games equal a lot of travel. P5 Colleges probably play 65-70 PERCENT OF THEIR GAMES AT HOME. So we are looking at 15 road games, some very short distances.

That said Jay Wright is a reach imho.

I love the Scott Drew idea however. Good recruiter, Texas links/connections.

Well, there was some subtlety involved in CMM's maneuverings during this period. He wanted a bigger fish but had to obey his orders. His manipulation of the situation could still have resulted in CRR coming to Bama, but he did a masterful job of making the offer easy to turn down...

Don't get me wrong, I don't think CMM was perfect by any stretch - I just think the way he balanced the pressure from his bosses to get where he wanted was very impressive.

I remember RR saying In published reports after the meeting with Mal in NYC that he just did not sense that Bama thought he was THEIR MAN. It did not make sense to me at the time. Of course later it seemed to. If that was intentional on Coach Moore's part, it was masterful, as you say.

I think lots of people said the same thing about Coach/AD Mal Moore until the Coach Saban hiring. Then, he became a saint. Remember he hired CAG also.

I am a big supporter of Coach/AD Battle. He has done more than probably any of us for the University of Alabama. There is no telling what support Coach Battle gave Coach Mal Moore while Mal was AD. That's probably why he's in the position that he's in.

He was a great, great success in business. I really don't think Tenercee should have ever fired him as their football coach except he couldn't beat Coach Bryant. But that could be said about a lot of people. After being fired he became a great success in the business world.

P. S. I have sort of followed his career since he played for West End High School. By the way, does West End High School still exist?

I do admire him and respect him and am happy he is Alabama's A.D. Whoever he hires will be okay with me. I also had that same respect for another person who just loved the Crimson Tide: Coach/AD Mal Moore.

Yes, Coach Battle is what? 73 years of age? He is a Class Act in my book? I'm sure his tenure will be short because of his age, but currently I think he is an effective AD.
West End is closed. The students go to Parker, Wenonah and Jackson-Olin now.

Fair or not, I get the feeling ageism should come into play in determining who to offer next. As much as a young, enthusiastic coach could (although it's not a given, i.e. Grant) excite the fans and relate better to players, it would take someone with precocious confidence and an abnormal amount of charisma to go up against what the SEC has fairly recently turned in to.

Imagine being a 30-something with a mid to low-major resume trying to elbow in on a table that seats Calipari, Donovan, Anderson, Pearl, Barnes, Martin and Howland at the SEC coaches meetings or even more following them in a blue-chipper's home. It's a simple fact that most any coach now on our list would take a back seat to that group. It's not a definite even Marshall could've commanded his own space at all times, but to throw Prohm, Drew, White, maybe even Miller or some to these other guys I'm afraid wouldn't stack up too well, potential withstanding. This is why the Crean, Avery Johnson, etc. approach may not need to be overlooked so quickly.

People are saying we may have to do a trial over the next 2-3 years and then gear up again once the fallacies of this search fade. The SEC coaching club has turned into a decidedly more veteran dichotomy, and unless one of those guys above can command a room unnaturally well, I feel we may need to put a more golden tint to such a "trial".

Sarcastically think Izzo with the Saban connection.
I know you probably dont think we will land one of the final four guys, but its worth dreaming. I can tell you Wisconsin's coach is the only possible outof all of those, and that doesnt look possible. But then again, Barry Alvarez has rubbed big name coaches the wrong way enough to leave as of recenty (Bielema and Anderson come to mind). i dont think we would land bo ryan, but it is a lot more foreseeable than landing Calipari,Izzo, and Coach K.

Wishful thinking on Day 19*Groan* :cool2: :BigA:

Lucky for us Rich didn't decide coaching here with our history was worth Moore's low balling or any negative vibes he gave off.

Avery Johnson would probably be a great recruiter. He is a face kids know from television. I would only worry if he got us to the promise land he would leave shortly after. You know if he wins it all here he is straight back to the NBA.

That would be my concern as well, I think his passion is in the NBA. Just my two cents

I understand that, but at the same time say he stays 3-4 years the program will probably be in better shape than he left it and I will be ok with that.

I had heard the same thing. He was very diplomatic.

Some of the coaches discussed here are way out of our league. If we couldn't get CGM to leave Wichita how in the world could we get Stevens or Wright? Bama is just not highly thought of right now so it looks like it will be a Prohm or Hurley type hire.

Stevens would be an INCREDIBLE hire but I just can't see him leaving Boston.
