I think it's a dumb move, but didn't he get engaged just before the season started to a pro surfer? Maybe that played a factor? Young men and hormones...

Crazy to think ink he can play at a JC then transfer to a Div 1 team, say an Oregon and play in game 5. Is that what I got out of this?

I'm not even sure he made the right business decision. Are there JUCO schools that are going to take him this late in the semester? Can he even enroll in classes somewhere else and actually pass the classes legitimately? If he can't go JUCO and get his associate degree by December, then what has he gained?

I think this all looks like bruised ego more than calculated self-interest.

Ultimately, it comes down to this--when you recruit as many high quality players as we do, some of them, who aren't getting the playing time they want, are going to leave.
It's not betrayal. It's simply them trying to do the best they can for themselves and the people they love.
So give them a break.

I still don't see how he can enroll at a juco now. I know some of their football standards are low, but can he just start taking classes a month into the semester?

Someone mentioned Philip Sims not starting at Virginia after leaving. Star Jackson couldn't start at Georgia State after his coach said he was the best player at our spring game.

You'd think a future #2 NFL pick could beat out a true freshman here. Yes, he was an Elite 11 MVP. So was Sean White.

This guy left in the worst way possible but the reality is that a guy who quits on his team mid-season is no leader and QB is by far a leadership position. That is the issue I have. Everything else about it makes sense longterm.

At a local community college they have split terms for the semester, so he might be transferring to a college like that.

I don't think there are many teams out there planning to start a guy who is ineligible for the first 4 games of 2017. It is worth fighting for from the Barnett camp because it does add some value to his recruitment. Especially for a team who may not be incredibly sold on their QB group and would be likely to look at other options as the season progressed. Or just plain availability so he isn't a "dead" scholarship counter all of 2017.

Not while the season is still going. No, that is unacceptable. Period.

Maybe for extenuating family issues. (Those do happen. Trust me, I know.) No, leaving now is quitting. Transferring, at the end of the season, is transferring.

Arm talent; AND toughness and decision making. One out of 3 so far.

Exactly - there are loopholes but he has a tough road to be able to get into a Division 1 in January and even tougher if he doesn't go until August then expects to try to start game 5 or 6 that fall.

Saban only went as far as to say that Barnett met with him before practice Wednesday, for which he was not present during the team’s media viewing period.
“Blake is a fine young man,” Saban said. “He’s done a great job with his program, and we’d love to see him be a part of the program in the future, but we also want him to do what’s best for him.
“I don’t have a final decision on that. Nobody has told me that. You may know more about it than I do, so I can’t make any more comments about it other than that.”
Multiple tweets from Alabama teammates, though, appear to suggest that Barnett has left the team.
