Question about legal fan practices (LSU phone gimmick on Saturday)

I was at the game on Saturday, and it had a blast. But I don't know if you could tell watching the broadcast, but at a certain point during the 3rd quarter LSU fans in unison turned on their flashlights when Bama had the ball. I was wondering if that was legal since the SEC makes a huge deal about piping music during a play, cowbells outside the confines of MSU, and just about everything else.

Idk if it had a real effect on the game, but it was sure as heck bright due to the number of phones lit up.

Verne and Gary mentioned it but CBS never showed it IIRC. This is on the fringe of being an unfair thing but I could not tell if it effected us any.

Mrs Basket Case and I were three rows from the top, near the corner. All the way on the opposite side of the stadium, it was impossible not to notice one LSU fan's strobing flashlight. It really shouldn't be legal.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen more of those laser pointers on strobe aimed at the QB's eyes. I know it's happened a couple of times, but given the way of the world today, I'd have expected more incidents.

If I witnessed that and was close by, we'd both get thrown out.

Eventually others (like us) will do it and the SEC will get all high and mighty and crack down on it, though I'm not sure the phone flashes are much worse than scoreboards and ribbon boards. LSU gets away with more than anyone. The Conference limited us doing Rammer Jammer till once at the end of games because the phrase "hell out of you" got their knickers in a twist. That's Sunday School language compared to what you hear (and read) in Baton Rouge. They've been blowing whistles for years, though that tends to hurt both ways, I think. A laser pointer should not only get you thrown out, it should get you arrested.

At least they don't have cowbells....

How to get it banned, or get the ban enforced? Start doing it at Alabama.

I was at the game and noticed it but it didn't seem like some huge competitive advantage to me -- certainly no more so that the crowd waving thundersticks during a free throw attempt in basketball. Doesn't seem like a big enough deal to outlaw.

I understand what yall are saying...but if the barn's big screen tv lights don't affect the game, I don't see how the strobes would. I notice it more than any other during their night games.

The barn's tv is on one side and elevated in a specific position. This is spread out all over the place. Fwiw I don't really have issue with them doing it because it just adds to their aura of a hostile host, I'm more curious on if there is a rule because it does seem to fall more in line with the cowbell advantage that MSU has but there has been no real mention before of this happening. Again I'm wondering if there is a line of unfair crowd advantage.

Isn't this somewhat similar to fans at basketball games with those colorful inflatable tubes that they wave and whack together while a player takes a foul shot? Do they still do that? Also cowbells always magically end up back at MSU and if they can't keep those foreign object from being used I doubt cell phones will get wrangled. Also, while annoying, those cowbells, have done little other than make their own fan base deaf.

The cowbells are actually an exemption that the SEC has made to the no noisemakers policy.

Call me simplistic but I don't see any difference in lights than the home crowd making so much noise it interferes with the visiting team hearing the signal. We seem to think that is fair, so why not other disruptive things? I used to sit at our high school games and look at the scoreboard which said "Home" and "Visitor" and think "I don't treat visitors to my house like this." Thankfully most electronic scoreboards have the team name now instead of home and visitor.
