I do think Jalen should have been taken out for a play or two for two reasons: throw out a new look, certainly would not have hurt and two might would have settled Jalen down and refocused him. He was not in top game mind form. It seemed we had one game plan and no one was changing their minds. RTR

And don't forget last year's NCG against Clemson where we were 2-15.
Oh and how about another 4-14 effort against Washington last year...

Somewhere in the program office they have historical trend of several key statistics so they see the influence of stats on each other. This cant be ignored.

It's not just that it wasn't working - they were flawless in their blitz pick-ups. I have never seen that before. You would send a guy off the edge and the RB would have stayed in on that side and picked him up. You would send a guy late up the middle and there was someone waiting for him. It was eerie - like that had your defensive play calls.

Sounds like someone was stealing signals.

5-14 (LSU), 3-9 (MSU), 3-11 (AU), 3-16 (FSU), and 4-14 (TXAM)

If that isnt a trend I dont know what is...
Especially when Phil Savage on the radio broadcast mentioned almost every third down this past Saturday "third down conversion has been a point of emphasis going all the way back to the spring". I assume primarily due to the abysmal performance on third down in the national title game versus Clemson.

It also makes me wonder if we were doing something (unknowingly) to tip them off pre-snap? Because Big1G is right. It was scary how flawless they picked up our blitz. No matter who much or how long we tried to disguise them before the snap.
i would imagine that with our losses in personnel, our blitz packages are a lot predictable than usual.

We didn't try to disguise them very much...just lined up close to the LOS and came full bore. If we could see it coming, you can bet AU's coaches and players could see it coming.

I just hope the old adage "you can learn more from a loss than a win..." comes true -- and we get a chance to show it.

I agree. I want our team to have a second chance so bad and to make it to the playoffs. I think we would have some things corrected by then and be healthy. I wonder if the players just assume we will make it to the playoffs. I hope they don't feel entitled that way. This loss could help the team a lot if we do get in the playoffs (mentality wise) but also hurt the team motivationally if we end up in a bowl game. I feel for Damien and Bo and their lack of touches this year. I hope at least Damien will discuss things with Saban or Daboll about the running back situation.

We've been bad on 3rd down for going on 3 years.

We kinda overlooked it since Jake Coker lead us to the promised land in '15, but I do remember the struggle then.

The common denominator, at least on the surface, is arm talent at qb. More specifically the ability to quickly and accurately, deliver a pass (often in tight coverage) to a receiver beyond the sticks.

Jalen struggles with accuracy and a quick release and, although JC was a little more accurate, he suffered from a very slow windup and release too.

Admittedly, our current offensive playcalling is part of the problem right now, but going back to 15 that was when Kiffen was still in control and doing an excellent job.

We were actually better last year than 2015.

Just rewatched the 4th down pass to Foster. It looked to me that Jalen may have waited too long to throw him the pass. If he had thrown the ball sooner Foster would have had more room. As it was he kind of waited to long and threw Foster into the waiting d.

I want an OC that can recognize what the defense is giving us and make adjustments. Any chance we bring CJM in as an "advisor" ?

Also something our qb said earlier in the year had me worried. He said after a game that he was driving the bus and people needed to figure out if they wanted to be on the bus or off. I think Jalen has been reading too much in the media. He isn't driving the bus, Saban is. Jalen is a passenger on the bus just like all the other players and he needs to get the ball to some of the other players better. A game can rest on his shoulders but it doesn't have to.

I remember that. Couldn't remember exactly what he said.

I think that if you watched all of the film on Hurts, throwing the ball late would be a recurring theme. It seems that he needs to see the receiver get open instead of anticipating some throws. Even when he hits a wide open Ridley on a play, he holds the ball for quite a while before making the throw. It has cost the offense some big plays.....

On most of his long passes to Ridley, Calvin has to break stride and slow down, if not altogether stop, to make the reception.
