Breaking down the final play - the UGA safety wasn't the only lapse

I was rewatching the final play from a few angles after a UGA fan said "If the safety does his job, it's an easy pick"

I noted what Tua did (only because he told me and I knew what to look for) regarding the safety, but found something else interest.

Georgia is running 4 DL, and everyone else in coverage. 2 deep safeties leaves 5 guys to cover the 5 eligible receivers.

The big thing is that there was double coverage on the TE #82, Irv Smith. On the winning TD, he's the one who is running from the right side of the line to the left on a slant.

That leaves #4, Jerry Jeudy, in the WR spot by the TE, running a deeper slant but inside the deep safeties. The guy that is supposed to be covering Jeudy operates almost as if he's playing zone - not sure if this is because he is unaware that the WR that is far right (Ridley) is streaking and is already well beyond his ability to cover.

While all this is going on, #3 for UGA appears to give a good bit of cushion to the safety valve, #34 Damien Harris, but floats back with Irv Smith (who is already being covered by the other LB for UGA).

Basically, if Tua doesn't get the look to DeVonta that he wants, he has an open Damien Harris for at least a moderate gain, and an open Jeudy (thanks to the guy who is supposed to be in man coverage with him breaking to focus on Ridley) pretty open and very close to the first down marker by the time he would get the ball.

UGA's safety bit, but UGA had two breakdowns on deep coverage on that play (not just one) and the safety valve is there in the speedy Harris who likely would get a good bit of yardage (if the guy who was supposed to cover Jeudy sticks with him, then the LB breaking to cover the TE would allow for Harris to get a pretty big gain).

In summary:
Harris, the safety valve, is open enough to get some yardage - with his speed, maybe to a manageable 3rd and 7, 8
Jeudy, slanting from the right to the left, is underneath the safeties and his cover has broken off. Tua has an option that gets him REALLY close to the first down marker (Jeudy is at least 17 yards by the time of the release)
DeVonta Harris, of course, blows past his cover man and the safety holds thanks to Tua (even though that safety really wasn't in position to break up a pass to Jeudy, he might be able to stop him from getting a first down)

The only people truly covered by UGA's defense on that play was Ridley (streaking on the opposite side of DeVonta Smith) and Irv Smith (the TE). With only 4 DL rushing, Tua had plenty of time to pick it all apart.

I think they were really focused on preventing a first down rather than a touchdown, and didn't really expect a deep throw. But the O-line stoned the pass rush, and BAM.

I think Tua knew where he was going the whole time. He froze the safety with his eyes just enough and trusted Smith to do his job and walk off

Well, sort of. He knew where he was going if the safety freezes (he did) - Tua is able to keep his eyes on the safety while surveying the half of the field that Jeudy is on.
If the safety doesn't bite and sticks with Smith, then Tua is already SUPER aware of how open Jeudy is on this play.

Yep, Ridley streaking is scary enough for the secondary so I bet that was on the safety’s mind. Either way we were gonna be in business or TD. He chose TD. I also think they underestimated Smith’s speed. Once that corner couldn’t reroute him it was over.

it was amazing to see how much faster he was than the uga defender. he had 2 yds on the defender in the picture. by the time he caught the ball, he was 5+ yards in front of him

There's another breakdown here:
How the sack on first down led to the winning play

This image (see #4 for Bama) with a huge cushion between him and all the defenders. If DeVonta is covered, Jeudy is going to get almost everything Alabama needs.

That's just horrendous coverage. Nobody is covering the back on the 37 yard line... that should have been Roquan and Aaron Davis (walk-on) is allowing #4 to have a picnic in the middle of the field. Malcolm Parrish, don't even get me started. He gave up and got whipped on two plays resulting in 14 Bama points. He graded out at a 23.2, which is mind bogglingly bad. Georgia has historically fielded a weak secondary. There's been so much talk about it since Monday there's no way Kirby can ignore it.

Truthfully, I’m not sure what they could have done with that group of WRs.

If the safety does his job it's not a pick because Tua never throws it. He knew exactly where the safety was and waited until he knew he was out of position before throwing it. If he went with Smith then Tua finds somebody else.

Your secondary was your weak link...we just couldn't attack until TT came in.

How often did we get beat deep trying to keep them from getting a first down when Kirby was here?

Not related to the score, but a still photographer ran out onto the end zone once the TD was scored and Irv kind of laid him out (accidentally) en route to celebrate with Devonte.

4 verts (Seattle in Bama/Pats lingo) is a flat out beater for Cover 2 Sink. We knew they'd likely go split safety there so we wanted to put a lot of pressure on their safeties to stay at home and not break until the ball got in the air. Heck, we may have just been hoping to sniff for a touchdown then use all that vertical action to toss it underneath and let Dame make a play in space. We got the "throw for the touchdown" execution from UGA though. Soft off the snap from the corners, no redirection toward the middle of the field. Safety opposite Ridley's side got turned into stone by looking into the quarterback's eyes.

We haven't gotten that kind of execution in pass game since the last two years of McCarron but UGA also kinda blew it. The key is having a QB who can cash it in when the other guys blow it.
