Alabama QB competition article

There is a point, I'm actually just trying to spare you a really lengthy explanation. First, the OC discussion is valid because you can't address the Clemson game in a vacuum. You can't be like, yeah Hurts sucked that game, without at least acknowledging yeah but he had a new playcaller. That's like bashing a race car driver for not winning a race the first time running a car. That's part of the narrative.
I don't think the issue is that Hurts had a bad game vs Clemson. The issue is that he struggled with the same things he struggled with in every other game. It was just vs an elite team and our D couldn't overcome that.

I get your point. There were other issues on offense in that game that can be placed on Sark. But, Jalen still struggled with what he has always struggled with and that's not on Sark.

Also, Id have to look at it and I will at some point when I'm in the mood but I'd imagine part of Jalen's increase in ypa was purely from the changes in the offense that Daboll brought.

Back the jet sweeps out of Jalen's totals, and you'll see much more pedestrian stats.

He's great at a lot of things. Passing downfield is not on that list.

I'll give one last try at this and leave this be. To me this is like peeling an onion and to some people it's an apple.

My mother died when I was 14. I thought I was going to manage the situation ok, because I still had my dad, but he moved out and remarried within 4 months. He didn't invite me. So, I ended up living with a half-brother. Even though I didn't know him very well, he treated me very well. I was about as happy as I could be in that situation. That is until he decided to get back with his ex-wife (I can't blame him, she had his kids) and then I was left living by myself in the house for a while. After that I lived with another half-brother, who didn't like having me around, and made me feel miserable. I don't think he did it on purpose, but when someone doesn't like having you around, and you don't really have a choice, it's a pretty bad feeling. Finally, I got out of that situation when my brother in Atlanta said I could come live with him.

Now, you can say I'm using transference, but in this example, Kiffin was my dad, Sark was the first half-brother, and Daboll was the second. Hurts had a guy he thought he could rely on, and he screwed him over in the Washington game. Hurts then had Sark, and while thrust into a bad situation, it had the potential to work out. Sark left him to though, and I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Hurts couldn't have been happy with that. Sark was supposed to be good with QBs, it was supposed to be a similar environment, this could have worked out for him. What does Hurts end up with? The next brother, the guy who doesn't really know what to do with Hurts, and I absolutely believe Hurts felt uncomfortable. I have seen a lot of evidence to suggestion Daboll either didn't know what to do with Hurts, or simply didn't want him to be the guy at all. I see people here citing how things got worse with his play, and I agree, it did get worse. But I see the psychological aspects to that.

If you've never been in a situation where you start to feel really uncomfortable, and unwelcome, I can tell you it really messes with your confidence, and messes with your head. People said they thought Hurts looked relieved on the sideline at the Georgia game, yeah he probably was. I just don't think it was all about Hurts physical limitations. I'm not making up this stuff, RTR talked about the turmoil, it was real. There was real pressure building. What do you think it feels like to face a locker room full of people showing their unhappiness with you? This stuff is hard to process when you're a teenager.

Now, I said it before and I'll say it again. Hurts has some issues that this situation didn't create (though I did say before he took his first snap at Alabama that playing him as a true freshman could mess up his development). But I saw a guy crack under the pressure at the end of last year, a guy afraid to make mistakes, a guy who relied on himself and lost his faith in others. I've been there. That's what I think I saw. I could be wrong, what ever, but I can't help but understand things that way.

For the record stability and a situation I felt comfortable in is what helped me get better.

By the way, my thought on Mr. Hurt's comments is that he's talking about leaving before the 2019 not 2018. Most of the young men who early enroll tend to be able to graduate in three years. I think he will be a big time free agent as a graduate transfer, possibly one of the biggest since grad transfers started. I could be wrong but I just doubt a HS football coach will let his son leave a team after fall camp if they don't like the direction of the QB battle. His statement was all about 2019 and we all understand that reality. Nobody expected him to be around in 2019.

Even though the dad went public, I don't think it changes anything from Sabans point of view. Let the process play out take the high road with your comments at all times. The only thing Saban can control really is his process and approach. He has learned the minute you get married to a needed outcome you are not in control. In this way whatever the outcome so be it and move on.

If Jalen leaves, as much as we appreciate him, does he make any team we face next year unbeatable? Imo, no, we just defend him the same way he was defended for us.

I would let him transfer wherever he wants to go including A&M or LSU.

If Jalen is leaving because Tua beats him out, he is not going to be at Alabama next season and set back his development at the program that will give him a shot at his dream - playing QB in the NFL. Jalen starts or he is gone, not at some point in the future, but as soon as he loses the job.

I think our ceiling is much higher with Tua, as we've seen on the field. I'm just getting frustrated with transfers after losing the job.
That line may work in recruiting but if you think our ceiling with Hurts is just as high was with Tua, I've got some land to sell you.

If you look back to 2017, two games where I believe Jalen had the most success, LSU & Tennessee, and even in the Tennessee game, Tua outshined him but there were a couple of drives where Jalen was on the money with the RPO passes, I wonder why we went away from that after the LSU game?

Good QBs “think”, Great QBs “react”

What success in the LSU game?

I’m sorry, but Jalen’s dad appeared to have a lot of class and tact like his son, until these comments came out earlier today (if they are indeed true). You would only make those comments, if you knew you were defeated, and had to make what amounts to basically a threat in a last ditch effort to change things. Jalen’s dad should have just kept all that in his back pocket, and just do what he and his family needed to do, if/when they needed to do it. Also, to have that conversation with Saban is one thing, to have it with a reporter just shows desperation.

I knew someone would bring that up but sometimes you gotta watch the tape and not just look at the stats and the passes he did make in that game were some very good ones. Maybe I just look at things different, also forgot to mention the Mississippi State game as well.

IMO, it was not a threat, but a statement of fact. I.e., Jalen would start at Bama or transfer and presumably start elsewhere. I don't think he was giving CNS an ultimatum because they had already frankly discussed the issue and knew where the other stood: CNS would do what was best for the program, Mr. Hurts what was best for his son. They are both right, those are their responsibilities. The statements by Mr. Hurts simply made public what both primary parties already knew.

I sympathize with your personal story and agree that feeling wanted or welcome is one of the most significant factors in any situation in life. But IMO, though there are similarities, it doesn't apply directly here. IMO, and all we can offer is an opinion, is that Jalen's sense of relief was that he knew that many of the players and coaches felt that Tua should be playing and most importantly, he knew it. Though similar, it's different than just feeling unwanted. In your case it had nothing to do with your failure or inability to fulfill responsibilities. In Jalen's case, it was not only that he was unable, but that there was someone else available who was able to do what he couldn't - and everyone knew it, including Jalen and CNS.

I think you come out and you don't let Jalen run in any of the easy games. You don't call any running plays for him and you don't allow him to run. Have him take sacks. He has got to get where he becomes a pass first, run to find time second, and the run to gain yards 3rd qb. If you want a qb to progress in the passing game you don't design running plays for him. Why we did that last year idk.

I don't like Jalen running, but to make him take sacks instead of running and trying to gain yardage is ridiculous. I agree that when he plays in any easy games on our schedule, there should be no designed running plays for him, but to have him just take a sack is ludicrous.
