Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I disagree. Until his deficiencies were exposed, Jalen was the darling of the Bama nation.

Not on this board but I've noted, since the middle of the 2016 season, Hurts' deficiencies at this level, and that it would probably get us beat. To say it wasn't well received is putting it mildly.

Man, I hope this doesn’t affect the team negatively. I don’t want Jalen to be disgruntled though. Glad I’m not the CEO in this case.

I tend to agree. However, what was said was probably not acceptable and may not have been really heard...

I am not on staff or “in the know” and would not bet my house on this next comment because I didnt see or hear with my own eyes. But I do still have a couple very reliable friends who do fall in one of those first two categories and it sounds as though Jalen was being honest when he said the coaches had not discussed anything in detail with the two QBs in private.

They were just told in larger groups that the battle would be an open competition and the player who won the team and trust of the coaches would be the starter. But even then they both may have roles in 2019.

I was pretty shocked by this to say the least. And honestly, had some of my own reservations about it being true until Jalen spoke on it this am. And I genuinely never question these two friends and take them at their word when it comes to Bama. Now, I do believe it 100%. Still very surprised.

From most accounts, and now judging by Jalen's comments, the team is behind Tagovailoa anyway, so I doubt it will affect the team negatively. As for Hurts, I really don't care if he's disgruntled, but I wish he'd just go ahead and transfer. Maybe St. Nick will "encourage" him to do so now.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Yes, I did watch the video and I read the article:

http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...ng-alabama-crimson-tide-handling-qb-situation

OK, maybe they didn't 'blow anything out of proportion' but IMHO they certainly added their own take on things in a way to create some controversy.

But that's what they do, I guess......

You can watch Jalen measuring his words. He said exactly what he wanted to get off his chest. He even added a few additional statements here and there to confirm his concerns or issues with how things transpired. I agree the reporters were leading him where they wanted him to go. He not only followed he blazed the trail for them. I hate it for the kid. He is a really good kid and has an enormous heart. He just seemed to have been holding this all in and had not felt he had another outlet to vent. This was a mistake to vent those thoughts in this situation. But we all have vented at the wrong time before and most likely were well over the age of 20.

Agree 100%. I love the guy. Things will work out.

As Selma said - it's part of football. And as Earle said - not sure what the staff could have done to help.

Fingers crossed for the best result for all!

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Anybody go to Fan Day? How did Tua look?

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Is there any question at all by anyone here that Jalen has lost the starter job?

I realize we still have a few weeks to go before the first game but just wondered what the consensus is.

Done deal?
If it's not a done deal he's at best on THIN ICE now imho. Like Thin Ice that's cracking and you better change course before you fall in and sink.

I mean before today he had a 50/50 dead even fair shot to compete to keep/re-earn the job.

I think most everyone feels/felt that Tua would win because he's world's better at 'distributing the ball' and the younger FR and Sophs's already have more of a bond with Tua.

The whole team was already trending towards following Tua in Dec-Jan.

But man.... I mean he just basically fired shots across the bow towards the coaching staff and specifically CNS. That was INCREDIBLY poor judgement.

But not only that..... he did exactly what CNS cautioned both QB's NOT to do..... draw attention to yourself away from the team.

You could tell the UA media rep finally cut those last two answer/rants off before Jalen put his feet in his mouth any further.

He's done himself in I'm afraid. CNS ain't gonna be happy about this AT ALL.

At this point I'm already penciling in:

QB1: Tua, QB2: Jones, QB3: Hatcher, QB4: Barker, Redshirting and Graduate Transferring: Hurts

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

It's been said, by some, that they understand how Jalen feels. So do I. it appears that the team is atuned to Tua. Jalen doesn't have the team as he did in competition with BB. I understood how BB felt also. That team was behind Jalen. That team wanted Jalen, and BB knew he was on the way to the bench. He quit trying to win the team over, then he just quit. Is there karma in the works here? Like everyone else, I still appreciate what Jalen has accomplished at Alabama, and I hope he realizes that he still has an awful lot to offer and achieve there. That being said, I wish him the best of everything, no matter what decision his future football intentions may bring.

Roll Tide!

That still doesn't answer what should have been said to the two. Jalen apparently feels that he was owed much more, I'm not sure exactly what. As I said, I don't know enough to judge if they've failed or not. I'm just not willing to say they have, based on Jalen's remarks. I'm not sure anything they may have said would be pleasing to him, not to mention his dad. I don't like having one side of a story, particularly in a situation like this...

None of us know for sure what, or if, CNS sat them down and told them how things were going to be. I am of the opinion that CNS does not always do a good job getting his point across, or rather he speaks in terms that are difficult to decipher. This is okay when talking to the media and booster groups, but IMO may not be how to address this with two young players, both who really want to know the pecking order or where they really stand heading into the new season. My point is that it is okay to be all business and aloof with the media, but I don't think this is how you address the issue with two 20 year old kids. If I am wrong, then I will accept the flack, but if I am right CNS has done both of them a disservice.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Okay, so if your employer starts asking you about your future and it doesn't come with a promotion offer or a firm statement on where you fit...what do you think you'd feel like doing when you get home that night? I'd start brushing up the resume.

Like they can't guarantee him the starting position so by broaching the subject at all it could be inferred that they're giving him the wink and a nod to go somewhere else. Since the job hasn't been decided, they just kinda decided to treat it like a competition anywhere else.

I felt long ago that Jalen lost the starting job, but after today I think he lost any chance of ever getting it back. He didn't just bring attention to himself but also to Coach Saban by basically accusing Saban of mishandling the QB situation. Not good. Maybe Jalen's right that it could have been handled better but it's wrong to complain about it to the media. He spent his time talking about himself today while Tua spent his time talking about the team. If The QB battle is about who wins the team then Jalen probably lost whatever support he had remaining. Seems pretty clear it's Tua's team now.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Here's the deal. It doesn't matter if Jalen or others think CNS SHOULD have talked to him or not.

Jalen should have never said what he said today. Bottom line, it doesn't matter if you feel CNS should have handled it differently or not, Jalen crossed a line that in my memory no other player has.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I really hate this for Jalen. I was hoping he would have a role on this team, but it feels like he wants to be “the guy”, and that probably won’t happen for him. He has been handling everything with class and I can understand frustration, but he has to know the repercussions of this interview.

I agree with you that I am not sure anything said would have made a difference in making Jalen feel better. He is lashing out. I can only assume if they had all cleaned the air, maybe the public would not be getting to see this side of Jalen and he would not have felt the need to vent as he did. He would still have been frustrated and hurt. But maybe that would have stayed behind closed doors and the confrontation that is about to happen that now everyone gets to see parts of its dirtyness would never have been seen by the public. Who knows, maybe this would have all happened anyway.

My issue is Jalen acting like the Staff and CNS haven't been clear or fully truthful or something? I mean only CNS, Jalen, and Tua know about private sitdowns but....

CNS has been completely transparent publicly saying multiple times that neither QB would be given anything. That they would compete during Fall Camp and implied maybe even into 1-2 games until 1 guy clearly 'Won the Team Over' because that's how the QB job is decided in T-Town since 2007.

It seems to me that Jalen doesn't feel he should have to prove he's QB1. That he has done so much for the team and school that that goodwill alone holds his spot and that Tua should be considered the clear QB2 trying to unseat him.

I mean I don't know a PC way to say this but it sounds like he flat doesn't want to compete.... or feels like he shouldn't even have to....that it's his job based on 28.5 games of performance.

It's almost like he's been body snatched because he doesn't even sound like himself right now.

I just don't know how he expected anything different to play out that what CNS has publicly and almost assuredly privately laid out with regards to the whole situation.

Jalen's Dad even point blank told him and I'm paraphrasing 'You messed up and left the crack open in the door'.

Did he really just naively assume Fall Camp would get here and he'd be taking all the #1 reps by default and Tua be relegated back to the 2's after being the MVP of the NCG???

Today's events have been beyond comprehension.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

To keep the fall practice thread on track I am moving these comments here:

I’m afraid Jalen is pointing fingers instead of taking responsibility for himself. If he feels he needs to talk it’s up to him to ask for the coaches’ time. The coaches likely didn’t want to add any more pressure to his situation so gave him some room. They likely also wanted to see how he would respond to being the obvious #2 QB on the field and if this is his reaction to it then he failed the test.
Truth is, this likely has little influence on the outcome since Tua has a much higher upside and is already playing above Jalen’s abilities; but he did himself no favors today.
I will support Jalen so long as he puts the team first and that includes putting a stop to this sort of nonsense. If he graduates and transfers I will wish him the best of luck personally. It has been obvious he was out-talented. I didn’t expect him to be outclassed.
