What was your toughest, hardest, most depressing, gut-wrenching loss to take?

I have some toss-ups that are all painful:

2010 Auburn game: First and only Auburn game I've actually attended. Bought the ticket outside of the stadium about 15 minute before kickoff. Guy wouldn't sell it to an Aubie, but gave it to me at face value because of my BAMA shirt. Game looked great for a while, but every tiny thing that could happen against us happened.

Clemson Championship Game: Pick play deluxe, but why did we quit running the ball?

Auburn - Kick Six: All I remember is, my son, who had graduated from BAMA the year before, asking me what just happened? All I could say was "we just lost".

Auburn 2013. They ruined our bid for the 3-peat we surely would have won. And then they promptly went out and blew the game against Florida State.

I have not re-watched that game and cringe in disgust any time the stupid replay is shown. That was one game in which we completely lost ourselves. Bad coaching and weird player effort (I purposely do not say bad or poor effort. Those guys were giving it their all, but there was just some weird stuff that happened).
We really did, and that's what bothered me.

In 2010, well, it WAS a good Auburn team, particularly the offense. Whatever the truth with Cam Newton and the bag man, they were a very good team. Losing that one was bothersome but it doesn't bother you so bad when an equal or better really gets you.

But 2013......I mean, you had an all generation Alabama team and the Auburn upstarts had been 3-9 a year earlier. I've always said they were not that bad that year and not as good as their 2013 record. The 2010 Auburn team was GOOD. The 2013 Auburn team was an average team, maybe slightly above, playing above their heads long enough to nearly pull it off. They were like the 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers, who didn't belong on the field with the A's but waxed them anyway.

OFC response: Hard to pick just one, so I'll just say a 3-way tie, '65 Orange Bowl (Namath scored!); '72 Iron Bowl; '73 Sugar.
Worthy losses all:

I watched 65 Orange Bowl with my Dad and Uncle. I thought Texas may run away with it when Koy made the long run. They looked strong and Sloan stumbled badly out of the box. Namath's performance on his tender knee was electrifying. Royal had a great team with Koy and Nobis. It is ironic that Bryant never managed to beat him.

In 72 I recall Charlie Thornton at half time saying Auburn did not have a 1st down in the 2nd Qtr. ? It was as unbelievable set of circumstances that had them walk away with a win.

In 73 it took an incredible throw from their 1 yard line to drive a stake in our hearts. Two highly deserving teams played for number one that night.

I'm not in any way trying to disparage those of you who selected 1994 Florida, but I might have been more relieved after that loss than I've ever been.

Because we were going to get hosed by the media's infatuation with Tom "Never Won A Title" Osborne. Remember - it happened to Joe Paterno and back in the day, Stallings wasn't in the same zip code as Paterno nationally for "does the right thing." Time has overturned that character issue, but anyone here who thinks we'd have won the national title that year is fooling themselves. We'd have played Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, beat them, and 1994 would be up there with 1966 in "Alabama went unbeaten but only finished third."

So I was actually more relieved when we lost than anything else. Not happy, no. But for Pete's sake, we were gonna take it royally that year.

When we played Florida, we were ranked #3 and, presumably, would have stayed there had we won. Under the bowl coalition at that time, I thought we would have been able to play Nebraska.

Nope. I thought so, too earlier in 1994.

But I was checking on that and looking at the newspapers.

The Bowl Coalition only applied if you were ranked 1 and 2.

We were ranked third.

Nebraska already had the Orange Bowl in hand on November 26. The Florida game itself - winner to the Sugar, loser to the Citrus.
We were effectively blocked by Penn State being #2.

Btw - the bowl games jumped the gun that year. The actually announced their selections SIX DAYS EARLY on the basis of the assumption
that even if we beat Florida, we were not going to rise in the polls.

Once Penn State and Nebraska finished THEIR seasons - we were cooked no matter what.

The only hope we had was both of them losing and us beating Florida St in the Sugar Bowl.

As an Alabama fan, this would be my clear #2. The only reason it isn't #1 is because of the "you never know" factor. We know that the loss to Clemson cost you a championship (and 3 in a row). We do not know if that Alabama team would have beat FSU (though it is very likely).
Jimbo Fisher said it cost Bama a NC.

Well that’s just pooh...so do you think Alabama could have even beaten Nebraska, Penn State, Miami, or FSU that year???

regarding the benefits of scheduling a home and home against Bama
"To be the best, you have to beat the best. If being the best involves playing Bama, I don't wanna be the best no mo."

"This is getting out of hand. An Alabama defensive end just jumped out of my television and knocked me over my couch." Or
"Maybe we shouldn't have started a ghost at left tackle."

"Their 4th string running back just broke one for 40 yards and all we could do was swing our purses at him".

"We had first&goal and had to punt" if I remember correctly.

All of the losses have been hard to bare for me as with each of you, but the '73 Sugar bowl loss to Notre Dame made me cry like a baby lol!! But even that was not the toughest, hardest, most depressing, gut-wrenching loss to take for me!!

That would be the total beatdown by Nebraska in the 1972 Orange bowl by Nebraska, 38-6!! That was sickening the whole 4 quarters and there was no doubt we should not have even been in the same stadium with them!! No contest whatsoever!!

Nebraska actually called off the dogs on us that night!! :mad2:
