I’ve thought about this since the LSU game. I’m hard pressed to rag and blame college kids for playing a game. I put most of our problems on Saban and Golding. The strength of our D should’ve been the backside. We said last year that if we had Diggs then we might not give up the bombs to Clemson. After watching this year I’m not sure that’s true. DB’s are Saban’s strength and we never learned to play the ball in the air. I think Surtain has regressed. Some might disagree but just an observation from watching his season. Lots of young talent back there and hopefully this can be rectified. It should be at least.
As far as Golding is concerned, I know he was handicapped with only have 2 of his 7 projected front seven. But, idk if he fully grasps Saban’s system. It doesn’t seem he knows how to implement it effectively and teach it/prepare the kids to play. Again, I understand the injuries in the preseason. But, to me, the issues are bigger than this.
As far as the kicker situation is concerned I’m not sure what to think. We’ve not had a consistent kicker since Leigh Tiffin (let that sink in). I don’t think it’s talent. I do think it’s coaching and fundamentals. All of our kickers seem off from the approach, steps, and keeping their head down and following through. Consistently missing, especially in big moments, is preparation and development.
Not trying to be an eeyore just reflecting on the season and even the national championship game & the issues which have been apparent. Add to this getting gutted by the NFL, coaching turnover, and injuries 10-2 is an exceptional season. Just wished it wasn’t to the two we dropped. Hate losing to them both. First time since 2010 it’s happened.
Btw, we finished this decade 109-11 in the regular season since 2010. What a great 10 years it’s been.
