Yup, and many of the old-timers here would remember him. I dunno what happened to him, haven't spoken to him in 5-6 years, but he used to bring a lot of insight into the discussion.

Maybe he's just toying with them, but I think he actually believes it.
Those 3 I mentioned are on pretty much every rival board “giving insight” and acting as “ambassadors“ of the Alabama fan base. BW had some good stuff, but the other two.... let’s just say I never was a fan of and they seem to like boards with less rules and facts.

I'm glad that even during our lowest years we never stooped to that....or maybe we just have good mods that delete it before we realize. :p
Oh, many of us stooped that low. I was probably one of them. Hell, I didn't give us much credit last weekend before the game, to actually win it. I thought it would be a dawg fight. Only one of them showed up.

But, man, those were some dark days, around that Mike Price-Mike Shula era. I don't believe Tidefans existed prior to 1997, but I started spending a lot of time here as a new grad, around 1999. That loss to La Tech that season was what got me looking for information as to how long DuBose would be around. 1997 was miserable. 1998 was a shade better, before getting shellacked by V Tech in Nashville. And I had hopes that 1999 would be a winner, which it was, but not before La Tech caught our secondary asleep. Then, we caught fire. Should have beaten Tennessee that year.

But I definitely spent some time in Negative Town, back during the Mike Price-Mike Shula transition. I didn't have high hopes for 2003. How could we? 2005 was glorious, until it imploded. Mostly, I just come here to make fun of Auburn.

I can't imagine how things got during the suspension era. At least you had a community within which you could commiserate.

Yeah, even more, Tigerdroppings.

I am forever grateful that the PTB here at Tidefans.com never let this place devolve into that absolute gutter of a message board. Waaaaayyy too many comedians on the internet, today, yesterday, and I'm sure, tomorrow.

And, hey, CrimsonAudio, that 2000 game in Pasedena, since I see it referenced there in your jpeg....Didn't happen to make that trip didja? Me and my new bride did. Pasedena is lovely, but good God....the crap began to hit the fan that very day. Milons special team TD was just about our only highlight for YEARS....The win over Iowa State in the 2001 Independence (might have been Liberty, can't recall) was nice. The 2002 season, beating the pants off Tennessee, LSU, and finishing with 10 wins and bowl-ineligibility was bittersweet. 2005 was going great, with Peprah, Demeco Ryans, the Catch by Prothro, and another win over UT. Everything else is a dark, dark memory.

Man that stirs the memories. I wasn't really on the Internet back then, my interaction was mostly listening to Finebaum in the afternoons. I remember the controversy about not taking the MDB, or only taking the pep band, to Pasadena for that game which is referenced in one of those threads.

I'll never forget that game. Keith Jackson. Playing in the Rose Bowl. Milons takes that first punt back for the TD. I thought we were about to take off to the promised land. Good Lord I've never seen something crash that hard that fast.

I found this board thanks to bayoutider in March 2000. I ran into him on a separate, long ago defunct board (ncaaboards.com, run by an Okie St guy), and I found it because I was a tape collector looking for old Bama games. sbott used to run a tape trading board here, and several of us (including yours truly) helped him get the games out to our geographical areas.

Probably the best around here - and I've been unable to locate the thread since it's in an era where a lot of stuff seems gone - but when Franchione was greasing the skids to leave. This board documented CLEARLY that the Alabama fan base represented here UNDERSTOOD "hey, the guy has to be concerned about his family's future, and we're gonna be crippled for a few years." I was amazed at the SUPPORT for Fran ON THIS BOARD - if he opted to go to ATM. No, it wasn't universal, but in general the adults here went with "I don't know if I could turn down 2.6 million guaranteed at age 51, so while I'm disappointed, I understand it." And there was a lot of talk about who the successor was since it was generally assumed he was probably gone.

But then THE WAY he did it - vanishing without the decency to even say good-bye to the players he'd begged to give up their chances at national titles and bowl games - that brought the whole wrath of Bama Nation on him. Even Stewart Mandel, hardly a Bama partisan, said that the way Franchione exited suggested he'd believed every single stereotype of Alabama folks, right down to thinking we were dumb enough to think his refusal to sign the contract was an accident and then he was confronted with "lookie here, they want me somewhere else or I'd stay." He truly believed the Forrest Gump stereotype from folks who were willing to understand his situation and ours.

There are ways, though, that was almost a nostalgic, golden era in the sense that the fans here then KNEW - deep down - KNEW that all we needed was the right person running things.

A lot of us got through the bad years on this board consoled by other fans dealing with the same thing. I used to pop in and out and maybe go 2-3 years without posting, but I was always here for the big events: Price's transgressions, the coaching search, Shula's firing and the 600 names tossed out there as head coach. (Most of this board in 2006 DID NOT WANT Saban; I did).

Ah yes, sbott. I've got a small library of games, thanks to him.

We dodged a bullet with fRAN, as his Texas A&M tenure proved out. We MADE him, not the other way around. However, I figure we were head for a slide above and beyond what probation was going to bring, if I look at how his A&M stint went. So, we faced it anyway with Shula and I couldn't be happier with where we are today.

That's along about the time I first joined this board. I think it was in the 2001/2002 time frame. I had a different username back then, forgot the password after a long hiatus, and just created a new account in 2008.

I found this site by a simple google search in 2003. trying to find out whatever happened to Sherman Williams. I didn't post much because of architecture school taking up nearly all my time.
I don't believe I felt strongly towards any coach in 2006/2007. I know I wanted Shula gone. I know I didn't want Paul Johnson despite what his agent dabaxter wanted. Actually I think I was leaning towards Petrino or Wake's coach at the time. I am not proud of that.

Wow, this thread got off to such a good start poking fun at the viles. Next thing I'm reading is a nightmare trip down elm street - reopening those wounds, especially the psychological ones, isn't healthy, ha! Let's get back to bashing the toothless, it's way better for one's mental health. ;)

I hope UT has to turn to their 3rd string qb - in search of a spark!!!

That was year 2 of the forums. We were hosted on a record player spun by 3 hamsters on crack. It was bleeding edge in 2000 (and incredibly expensive relative to what we have value-wise now).

I watched bits of the UCLA game from the terminal at JFK. It was the day we moved to London. That whole season of watching games was via 24.4 dialup over British Telecom via Yahoo IM videochat. My brother pointed his webcam at his bigscreen and I "watched" it on about at 2"x2" vidchat. Many times at 1-4am GMT. I had to keep telling myself - "at least you're getting to live a pretty cool life right now" as I jetted back and forth each week London-Paris. Jedi mind trick for not feeling the pain!

My previous home was a well-known pay site. It was the 2004 season, and things were bad — Shula struggling, probation, UT problems, Auburn problems, Finebaum running amok, a largely unmoderated board.

Talk about eating their own....they started getting some truly nasty personal attacks among posters. I never had that problem, but a lot of those conflicts played out in public on the board. I mean, it was to the point of personal physical threats.

On multiple occasions, I begged the owner of the site to moderate. But he essentially said that if he did, he’d lose posters and therefore revenue. Since the board was his full-time gig, he said he couldn’t afford to do that.

I put forward that the prevailing atmosphere of the board was putting off both potential new subscribers, and existing ones, including me. I thought that, with moderation, he might lose some bad apples, but would actually attract more subscribers on a net basis. He ignored me.

So when my subscription expired, I just declined to renew. For a few months I was homeless, lurking on several boards. Then I came across TF.

What hooked me was when Earle smacked somebody for getting out of line. I don’t remember the poster or the specific transgression. But I do remember thinking he deserved the dope-slapping, and that that level of moderation was exactly what I was looking for.

16 years later, here we are, with the best CFB board on the net.
