Worst President in History?

ya know, the more I read nJack Bourbon's posts ,the more I think we're kin.

three way tie for worst

Grant - gave off the feeling of a tyrant to a recently subdued south

Jimmy Carter - made the same south look like a bunch of idiots... also a communist kiss-up with no testicular fortitude...next time I see him w/ Castro, I say try him in court for treason.

Bill Clinton - immoral, lying, stands up for nothing, yet pretends to every time a new poll comes out. Also was an example of how far our country has slipped in ideals....they voted him in TWICE because the current climate cares not about right or wrong, only about what benifits self.

p.s. the greatest ? sorry Reagan, GWB, FDR, and Ike....the best ever (even better than Washington himself) was Teddy Roosevelt. the very first conservationalist/president who had the same ideals as many orgs. like Ducks Unlimited, Save the deer so we can shoot the deer.... save the fish so we can catch the fish. Not a tree hugger, but a conservative conservationalist.

War in the Transvaal 1900: “when the soldiers going to the front were passing another body of soldiers whom they recognized, their greetings used to be, ‘Four-nine-four, boys; four-nine-four;’ and the salute would invariably be answered with ‘Six further on, boys; six further on.’ The significance of this was that, in ‘Sacred Songs and Solos,’a book of hymns, number 494 was ‘God be with you until we meet again;’ and six further on than 494, or number 500, was ‘Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine.’”
Can I edit this now? … just sayin.

"Worst President Ever" has been the "this week in college football" of politics.

For the record - every single President that I can personally recall being in the office (which is Carter) with the sole exception of GHW Bush has left office with a huge swath of the electorate saying that person was the worst President in history, which strikes me as more of a political partisan narrative than it does having any actual basis in fact. George Will stated when Clinton left that he wasn't the worst President, he was the worst human being the nation had ever elected President. (Will then jumped the GOP and voted for Hillary and told them to grow up in 2016, too).

But there's a difference between being a President who does something monumentally stupid though there was a majority/consensus among your advisors that "this" was the course of action and it went badly but with the best intention to do right - and blatantly and flagrantly trying to turn yourself into a "king for life" with no inhibitions from breaking laws and imposing an authoritarian regime. All of the Presidents I can recall and even a few before that were at least alive and in memory of my parents so that we could talk about (or for that matter grandparents) - every single one of them brought strengths and weaknesses to the job, some more relevant to that job than others, but in the end even when willing to go as far as Nixon did, they understood a point of surrender (largely because once upon a time the two political parties themselves had conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans who would hold them to account).

I gave Trump the same chance in the futile hope that somehow, some way he could channel all his hedonistic appetites (even accidentally) into something good despite the fact I didn't vote for him. He failed more spectacularly than anyone because he's a fraud who's genetically incapable of doing anything but thinking first of himself.

Donald Trump is both the worst President this country ever had, and he's also the worst human being that was ever elected President. Don't tell me "the economy and 401K", he didn't have anything to do with it. He wasted trillions of dollars, lied every time he opened his mouth, and weakened the infrastructural framework of the republic so badly that I shudder at the next person who has more political smarts than he does and is capable of pulling off the coup (imagine an effective orator like Obama with the street smart political skills of a Nixon or a Clinton and lacking Trump's self references in every sentence; it scares the hell out of me).

Sadly, this trophy is only the Don's until the nightmare takes shape.

Worst president in history?

Truman finished that war and started one in Korea.
North Korea never attacked us
.
From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost,
an average of 18,333 per year.
I know it's an ancient post, but worth pointing out something: Truman didn't have much of a choice in NK. History shows that he did the right thing.

South of the 38th parallel would be a hellish place if we had sat on our hands and did nothing.

And "we"(in this sense) meant several nations. Us, the ANZACs, the Brits, Canadians, and several other nations that took part in that war.

Yeah, we didn't finish the job, but Cold War brinksmanship entered into the equation. No one had the stomach for a nuclear outcome.

Carter's legacy has been unfairly impugned, mainly due to the Ronald Reagan mythology.

Carter inherited years and years of economic malaise. Nobody seems to remember Jerry Ford's failed "Whip Inflation Now" campaign. Carter's did appoint Paul Volker(sp.) to the Federal Reserve, which led to a painful(if desperately needed) tight money policy that sent interests thru the roof.

Carter's greatest legacy was Camp David. Egypt and Israel are no longer at war with each other. While I don't think the Middle East will ever be at peace, at least one big powder keg has been extinguished.

I have come to believe that MacArthur's excursion into North Korea that ultimately led to the Chinese Army crossing the Yalu River was one of the greatest military blunders the history of the US. His arrogance and lack of attention to military intelligence left his troops exposed, outmanned, without adequate supplies in frozen North Korea. His objective was to widen the war but most American's lacked the appetite for World War III.

Carter inherited years of overspending for Vietnam and Johnson's Great Society, winding down of missions to the moon, the first oil shocks, an economy mired in stagflation and the fall of Iran.

Reading back through the first few pages of this thread is like a trip down memory lane. All those conservatives I had forgotten about. Back then, we could never have imagined the board would be the way it is now. :)

Crimson Nan, Tommy Mac, and all the rest...we used to really go at it. I think history has shown which side of the argument during the Bush years was the correct one.

After watching Bush lie us into a war, I couldn't imagine a President could stoop any lower. I guess Trump showed me.

funny thing is, they thought this board was a cess-pool of liberal group think back then too.

I caused great consternation during my first tour here for daring to poke fun at the followers of Republican Jesus, a cult that no longer really reads the red letter parts of the New Testament.

I came back after a few years in the wilderness, only to find that my kind had multiplied. :D

In my earlier tour here, there were only a handful of us (if that many) who dared challenge the greatness of Bush-Cheney and the Reagan mythologies.
