I was not clear. What I said intimated that the EU nations could not act on behalf of NATO on their own, and as I said, didn't have the assets without the US. I do agree that they would not do it without us...
Okay. Gotcha. Here is the Russian magic. Even if the EU (as the EU, vice NATO) were to do something robust and decisive, as the Russians would call it NATO anyway, since there is a 90% overlap between members of the two groups. In the Russian view, all the NATO allies are merely puppets of Washington and will do whatever Washington tells them to do.

Well Russia has officially entered Kharkov city center…

Gee these city names are already reminding me of the top 5 places that you don’t want to be in the Second World War.
This is what Day 5? It took five days for the Russian Army to get vehicles into Kharkiv? That is not good for the invasion timetable.
Plus driving vehicles through the main boulevards is not controlling the city. I suspect that really controlling will be a lot harder.
Outside of LPR/DPR, Kharkiv is the city that has the highest percentage of Russian-speakers (although maybe Odesa has that "honor.")

Taking major cities is always tricky. Especially when you are fighting against armies instead of rock throwers. But it does seem that everyone who invades Ukraine seems to either go in thinking about encirclements or are forced to do them.

Someone needs to remind Belarus that they will need the rest of the world more than they need Russia...this is not a winner for them, no matter what the outcome of the war.
This is not a question about what Belarus needs, but what Lukashenka needs. He had to cheat his backside off to “win” the last election, and he needs Putin’s help to remain in power.
He is not as concerned with Russia effectively absorbing Belarus in five years time. He’d be dead now if not for Russia, so however Russian troop presence in Belarus hurts Belarus, it’s worth it in Lukashenka’s view.

Encirclement is a tactic. I am not sure what the alternative is.

We consume close to 20M barrels/day. In most months what we buy from them would not even be a day's worth. Production could be ramped in various places to make up for the marginal (but not insignificant) loss.
ok, perhaps reliance is a mis characterization, but there is a reliance to ensure supply and price stabilization. Russia is our second leading net importer of petroleum behind only Canada. ( we import more from Mexico, but we export more than we import to Mexico) .🙂

I don’t understand in all this, why so many on the right, which is my lean, keep characterizing the keystone pipeline as Significant in keeping the US energy independent. It wasn’t American oil to begin with. The majority of that oil wasn’t for the US Market . That oil was to be piped from Canada to Houston to be sold on the world market to help control the price of oil. It was to make rich people richer. Keeping supply readily available and prices low to end users was a windfall.
