It may be time to go back and start re-evaluating three star recruits, looking a little harder at their potential, and start coaching three stars into five stars, aka Demeco Ryans to keep players in the program longer. If there are four stars not getting picked up in the transfer portal then that means three stars are even less in demand.

Here's the major flaw I see in expecting to consistently benefit from the transfer portal. There is a "thing" called team chemistry, it is the "humanness" of the sport that is as real as the oxygen in the air. I've been a part of teams and coached teams with talent all over the roster (baseball) yet won more with less talented teams and lost fewer games with less talented teams, because of continuity among the group that only comes with keeping the same core group of players together building something where the sum of the parts is much greater than the individual parts.

My fear for Alabama is this constant turnover of players going in and players going out is going to eat away at one of the foundational pillars of having a good team. Yes, all programs are going to have to deal with it, but Alabama has the furthest perch to fall from so we will see the greatest impact of it.
It will likely lead to more lightning in a bottle teams. Some team that wins the portal one year has a good year, all those players leave and some other team pops up.

A lot of the oline guys are probably looking at how the off season conditioning is going to be and spring ball and don't want any part of it. We improved our run game as the season progressed and I bet some know what's coming.

How would you like to put your whole soul into your freshman/sophomore years thinking that as a junior you will be ready and get your chance....only for the team to take transfers who immediately start? Players that werent at the early morning weight sessions, the off-season voluntary workouts, going 100% in practice knowing you werent going to get a rep on the weekend but thinking you would in a year or so....only to see someone gifted your spot....welcome to the transfer portal dynamic that will kill team morale

Michigan has 3....2 of which are already headed to Iowa.

TCU as 0

Ohio State has 2

Georgia has 0
Going into the playoff, the participating teams will never have as many in the portal as those that didn’t make it. Let’s see what happens after the CFP is over.

I still think it’ll be fewer players transferring for them — people tend to want to stay with a winner — but it might be a bit early to evaluate the fact that the four CFP teams currently have 5 total players in the portal. They’ll have more…the question is how many more.

That sounds good in theory but you need a GREAT staff of coaches to do it.

Right now we are turning a LOT of 4 and 5 Stars into 2 and 3 Stars.

Starting with players that are even rougher around the edges would be a disaster with the current staff.

Of course it is. But we can't be comparing Bamas exiting players to Georgia.....right now. After they are done, sure, but not now.
I think you're missing the context of my point. What I'm saying is that Had Bama play in the playoff, It wouldn't be a lot of players entering transfer portal by now. Even playoff ended today, Georgia probably won't have high amount of players entering portal.

Exactly. That's a good data to look at between now and Janurary and how it affects the teams in playoff and transfer portal.

They'll want to get in on the portal as well...Kids will want in...
There will be plenty of "forced" entries after the CFP.

No, I got the point. The culture at Georgia will keep them from having as many leave.

We have a coaching issue that needs fixing.

My point is its really pointless to even bother looking at playoff teams until they are done. Georgia may have half the players leave that we do though, yes.

Arkansas has 10 or more.

A lot of SEC teams have more....because SEC players are coveted through out the country and they know it.

Life (and football) is hard. There's no seniority rule for promotions in football, unlike our beloved State Government.

Youtube Mal Moore's story about his plans for quarterbacking the Tide his final year.

Also, I wonder how the 12-team format will impact the transfer portal as well. Granted, a lot of players transfer for lack of playing time, but as you've stated, they also transfer to be on a winning team and a chance to play for a title. With 12 teams being a part of that conversation, I wonder if that will slow down movement.

I believe this massive turnover due to the portal is also why the quality of play generally sucked this year and why we saw no great teams.

Crimsonaudio nailed my thoughts. I've grown more interested in the NFL over the last couple of years. Some of it is because of so many Alabama alums playing and starring, but a lot of it is all of this upheaval and change on the college side.

Kids just aren't gonna stay and get developed. It could hurt the NFL eventually, draft picks coming in less developed.

This is true…but how many did Kirby lose last year? Outside of Burton who I never thought was all that.
They lost a good bit but the only ones that jumped out were JT Daniels who had no chance of starting this year and Burton. The biggest thing is they brought none in. If you get the wrong guys in it can impact the culture of your football team.

in the past we were constantly looking who was leaving or being added in order to get within the 85 scholarship count. The same folk are on here shouting “the sky is falling” because players are jumping in the portal.

This has been happening all along. It’s been said that the college game is about getting a guy in the program and the next recruiting cycle looking for a guy to replace the one they just got. Freshmen have come in and taken spots over guys who have been there a couple years putting in the work. NFL is the same way and worse. Every position a GM is looking to replace at any point for someone who will either do the same job cheaper or a better job for the same expense. It’s not a “fair” world to anyone who gets in to it.

Its interesting that Tommy Brockermeyer is in the portal but his brother isn't? Just making sure their decisions are separate maybe?
He's been a head scratcher for sure. Was he overrated as a recruit? Was his development stunted by coaching? Does he not have the mentality to hack it at a place like Alabama? Very strange situation.
