I’ve been around a situation just a couple months ago where a guy fell out. As folks tried to work on him, the AED was brought out and they said it didn’t fire or work right or something. The gentleman was quite hairy and the pads weren’t making good contact with his skin.
With men that have lots of chest hair it can be a real problem. If you have 2 sets of pads you can use one set to get rid of some of the hair and then use the second set to shock with.

For once I have to give the NFL and broadcast some credit for a bit of foresight.

1) unlike the Joe Theissman leg snap, ESPN did not show me 17 different replays. They showed it once and after realizing his emergency, they never showed it again. Smart move.

2) the NFL DID postpone the game.

The narrative right now is that the NFL didn’t know what to do or had to be coerced into doing this and this was done by the players. But how about we wait and see if that’s really true. We have way too many instances of people thinking they know how other people should do their jobs. I run into this every day, and it’s all I can do at times to not just pop the person making the stupid comment.

Maybe the narrative is true. Let’s wait and find out before it becomes the canonical version that has to spend years being corrected.

Even if they would have shown the replay more, it wasn't anything different than 99% of NFL collisions.

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised that the "cancel culture' crowd isn't trying to cancel tackle football more this morning. Maybe they are and I've missed it, but it's something I've grown to expect anytime something bad happens.

I really hope this young man recovers and can have a normal life and possibly play again!

I've had an AED in my office for years. I didn't know until today that it is not a requirement for all dentists. I carried one in the trunk of my car for years.

I feel reasonably certain that there are multiple AED's in Paycor Stadium placed at strategic locations. The price of an AED is miniscule compared to the price of a lawsuit.

Also it appears the Jemele Hill (among others) narrative is nonsense:

“NFL executive Troy Vincent said there was no 5-minute warmup given to the Bills and Bengals to get ready and resume playing. "It never crossed our mind to talk about warming up to resume play. That's ridiculous. That's insensitive. That's not a place we should ever be in."

This was probably a TV musing that they had legit reason to believe but was incorrect. Maybe keep the networks better informed (who am I kidding, they make up stuff every day).

There is nothing at all wrong in these situations with just WAITING. You don't have to postpone the game immediately. Wait. Gather all the facts you can. Make your decision with the most information you have available.

It does not have to be that they had cynical motives in waiting to make the call.

Unfortunately, people can tweet without having to think.

This was very unusual and rare, but with the mass and speed of today`s players, the game is really not compatible with the human body. No, I`m not an advocate of banning the game that we all love. I do think that it`s a fact, nonetheless.

Yes. If you can bring a heart back to sinus rhythm ( sometimes ) with a pound on the chest, I would suppose you could take it out of said rhythm.
I read somewhere during all this that they found the pounding on the chest before starting CPR to be ineffective. Some of our resident medical personnel may confirm/deny what they know on this. I’d try to find where I’ve read that but I’ve been all over the place. It might have even been here.

There is a situation called Commotio Cordis. It is when a sudden, sharp blow to chest/sternum area causes sudden heart stoppage.
Had a cardiologist on Morning Joe talk about that condition this morning. Not only does it require a sudden blow, but apparently, the blow has to take place at just the right time during the heart's electrical cycle. So this was like the perfect storm of horrible.
