It is the reason availability to AED’s should be standard equipment at all sporting events from little league on up. Not just for situations with Commotio Cordis but other heart arrhythmias/conduction issues that can suddenly happen in seemingly healthy, young athletes. Not to mention people in the stands.
Most churches have them too in this day and age.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

I gave a presentation at work advocating all of our facilities have an AED on-site just 3 weeks ago.

I just heard that they administered CPR for over nine minutes. That would be asinine if an AED was present.

Hopefully I misheard.
I have read that both occurred. AED and CPR. Someone on the scene would have to lay out a timeline. There’s so many questions.

Was the AED brought out by the ambulance?
Will AEDs fire once and that’s it?

AED's are truly automated and functionally idiot proof. I've maintained them. They're blindingly easy to administer.

The machine, once you place it on the patient, will basically handhold you through CPR. It will periodically tell everyone to STAND CLEAR, scan for a shockable rhythm, tell you shock advised then ask you to press a button to administer the shock once everyone is clear. It will then scan again, maybe asking you to resume CPR, and repeat the process as needed.

Chris Pronger suffered commotio cordis after taking a slap shot to the chest in 1998. Praying for a similar recovery and outlook for Damar Hamlin…Pronger was back on the ice weeks later and played 12 more seasons en route to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Big difference from that video was he was far more responsive as he was carted off then Hamlin was.

Just had CPR training last year. This is exactly how it was.

Got home from work and saw what happened and I am still shook. Seeing that lifeless body fall to the ground, reminding me of that HS SR volleyball player who suffered a cardiac arrest during a match and she fall to the court. She's still alive and going strong, so I have to believe he will too. To see a video of Hamlin hugging his mom before a game (is was not a video of the Bengals) really hit hard. I cannot imagine what his mom is going through right now.

This young brother is in for the fight of his life, literally and I hope he overcomes it.

Thoughts and prayers to his family. 🙏

I’ve been around a situation just a couple months ago where a guy fell out. As folks tried to work on him, the AED was brought out and they said it didn’t fire or work right or something. The gentleman was quite hairy and the pads weren’t making good contact with his skin.

I’ve been certified for years. Comes with territory with a nurse for a wife that is a ACLS certified instructor. Even my kids and their spouses are certified.

Being a heart attack survivor from 8 years ago, I tend to be overly aware of the circumstances around me. For example, when boarding an airplane I take note of where the emergency equipment/AED is located. I also look at the layout of the plane’s seating and determine “if I had to do CPR on someone, where would I position them? The aisle? The galley? The space near the bulkhead?

I don’t want to need to think too much in a situation like that. Just react.

Many of those AED stations will have a prep razor in the box for this reason these days.

If you have no other option than to slightly misplace the pads or apply pressure to hopefully get enough contact, that's all you can do.
