Every candidate for President, for national security purposes, should be required to release their tax returns. Americans have every right to know where the candidate is getting money from, at the least; the fact Trump has businesses in five or six countries, at least one of which is our undisputed enemy, and no one seems to care, is just mind boggling.
The IRS is already questioning some of his deductions, which if it were any other American would be disallowed out of hand. Taking money out of a business that loses so much money you pay no taxes on what you take out is beyond absurd and should never be legal; if you own a business that’s losing money, the fact you are making money from it is not just incongruous, it is a blatant slap in the face to the average taxpayer.
I seriously hope two things (at least) for the new year: the IRS cranks up (rapidly) its auditing of the 5%, and the American people wake up and put STRONG pressure on legislators to rewrite the tax code to at least level the playing field a little for the working class (I know the latter is a fantasy but I’ll stop hoping when I die or permanently expatriate).

I’ll go further - all school, military, tax records should be required to show BEFORE you can even get on a ballot anywhere at any time.

I’ve thought that for 25 years now.

I'll go further still - a basic competency test to see if these people even understand what their jobs are supposed to be.
Not a bad idea.

I began voting in 1988. My first issue was with Clinton and, well, WHATEVER the truth was about his military draft history. Before anyone thinks this is me dunking on Clinton (whom I admittedly still despise), George Stephanopolous even had his lost of trust in Clinton over the draft issue. Shouldn't we know, though? If there's records to support a version of events, you'd think it would be important.

But I began to notice in every campaign - almost anyway - you'd have this whole "will X release his Y records." I mean, if you don't, you're kind of telling me to vote for the more transparent person with less to hide. Bush's ANG service - most notably the gap without an OPR - never made sense to me, but he wound up (kinda like Clinton did) with a pass because the media went into overkill mode and ran stories that were easy to refute.

I never for the life of me understood John Kerry's refusal to release his military records prior to the 2004 election (he released them in May 2005 - and they vindicated pretty much everything he said). WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? That tactic was so inept, it left me convinced it was for the best he lost because that's political malpractice. You think there weren't people, nonpartisans, who looked at Kerry and said, "Well, he's posing as a war hero, but he won't release his records. Is it because his service isn't as good as he says it is?" I mean, what else would you think?

I always thought it even in my first elections to be a GOOD thing as far as the taxes for the reasons you cite. I have the right to know if my President is under the influence of a foreign power. And you'd think the political parties would want to be sure BEFORE it was too late to make a change on the path to the general election, too. (One Dem consultant mused that the ONLY good thing about the Gary Hart affair being exposed in May 1987 was it prevented him from getting nominated and then getting blown up with it after Labor Day 1988.

As far as Trump...never forget this lying sack of refuse crowed as a USFL team owner that "players were willing to sign for less money for us than with the NFL!" Have any of you EVER known anyone anywhere in your lives willing to take LESS money to do the same job????

I always figured it was going to take an act of Congress to pry open his taxes.
As it turns out, I was right.

This reminds me of a skit mocking Reagan when he first took office. David Brinkley (obviously an actor playing the part) asks Reagan to explain Reaganomics and he says, "Let's suppose your Mom baked a big, blueberry pie. Take that pie and cut it in half. The top half is for defense spending, and the bottom half is for domestic programs AND THE OTHER HALF is for the national debt."

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump drew criticism Friday for posting a video on social media that contains the image of a hog-tied President Joe Biden painted on the tailgate of a passing truck.

The Biden campaign was quick to condemn the video for suggesting physical harm to the sitting Democratic president. Biden has portrayed his likely 2024 opponent as someone who freely evokes Nazi imagery with regard to immigrants, while also stressing in speeches that Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 elections ultimately led to an assault on the U.S. Capitol.

“Trump is regularly inciting political violence and it’s time people take him seriously — just ask the Capitol police officers who were attacked protecting our democracy on January 6,” said Michael Tyler, the Biden campaign’s communications director.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung responded Friday night: “That picture was on the back of a pickup truck that was traveling down the highway. Democrats and crazed lunatics have not only called for despicable violence against President Trump and his family, they are actually weaponizing the justice system against him.”

___________

Are folks ever going to stop giving him the benefit of the doubt... or do they continue to provide cover because they agree with him?

No and yes. He’s the Last Great White Hope of the racist, intellectually challenged and/or morally bankrupt fascist citizens of this country, and a hero to the millions of fascists worldwide.
There is an upheaval coming, probably of the nuclear variety. The response will dictate the aftermath, and I’m 50/50 at best on what’s left being suitable for a new start, and much less optimistic on that “new start” effectively and appropriately dealing with the issues in the world today ( not just the one(s) that caused it).
Just looking around, it’s hard to feel optimistic on the survival of the species in such a situation, or the chances that what’s left will resemble what the human race is now.
Every day, I’m glad I’m not 20. If we are even here in 30 years, I don’t think I’d like what we had become.

It came to mind today that the first thing forbidden in the bible was knowledge.
To be fair - I don’t think Adam or Eve became Mensa candidates after eating the fruit from that forbidden tree (of Knowledge ), so maybe there was something else at play here….
