I think another point to consider, Saban didn't fire PG, PG left and took another job. Coach Saban didn't really "DO" anything here except try to retain PG by offering a raise.
Lane Kiffin gaining basically one of our "inside guys" probably not the best feeling either.
I wonder about the whole "raise" thing.............I'm not too worried about PG being an inside guy............

Let see: Kiffin, Fisher, Smart, Napier, Muschamp, Schumann, Cochran, McElwain, Dooley, Lance Thompson, Sunseri, Kevin Steele, Pruitt and on and on. All of which either coached at some point for Saban, work with him or worked with him at Alabama. And I’m sure I forgetting others. All could be considered inside guys. Yet not a ton of success either.

So no I’m not worried about Pete having “the keys to the kingdom”.

We all remember. But it wasn’t because we had a world class defense. We won a national title in 2017 with a QB who couldn’t turn left. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t a problem. The 2020 season hinged on Mac and the offense of Sark. The defense was merely passable.

I don’t think anyone is saying that the defense has been utterly incompetent under Golding. Simply that it could be and has been better, especially with the talent available at Alabama. And the statistics bare that out. Under Golding we went from tops in the SEC and top 5 nationally every year to almost always at the bottom of or outside the top 10. Pick any defensive stat and basically all of them decreased under Golding. The man has been the primary coach for ILBs every year he has been here, and our ILBs have been one of our weakest positions, with guys out of position or lost most of the time. I’ve seen this blamed on the players, but really, how likely is it that every single ILB for the past 5yrs is just too dumb to understand his job? It’s a coaching issue.

Long story short, I don’t understand your position that we can’t possibly upgrade over Pete Golding. Could we screw it up? Sure, but I don’t think that is likely. I also agree that we need a new O-Coordinator as well. Both coordinators have been hampering us. 🙂
Absolutely. It’s also not like he was just given a minute to get better. It was the SAME problems over and over and thats what wasn’t going to fly.

Quietly following the thread and like almost everyone, happy that CPG moves on. I think it is a great talent that Coach Saban has with respect to getting people off the bus while leaving their dignity intact. Most people who get to exit in that way retain gratitude for the leader that pulled it off even if that gratitude is not immediate. I suspect you will never hear a negative word from CPG about Saban though I'd bet next month's income that whatever the cover story is with respect to retention pay/raises or whatever, that this move was orchestrated by CNS. I'm going to hope that CPG continues to grow, beat back whatever demons he may be battling and is successful in 11 out of 12 games each year he is with CLK--I actually root for Ole Miss against most everyone but Bama (and have since watching Archie and Scott Hunter duel it out on one of if not the first nationally televised night game, when I was a pup in high school.) Excited for the future of the Defense. Anxious to see where we go from Coach O'Brien as well. RTR.

There's been one blogger, who doesn't even know what defense we run but tries to write about it, and displayed a shocking lack of analytic ability in trying to say PG was a good coordinator, say there was a rumor saban tried to give him a raise. That's almost the worst source you could rely on and that info is counter to what the most of the connected buzz has been for a long time.

I don’t know what Saban’s plan is, but I know he has one, and has several backups in case the top options don’t materialize.

The fact that Leonhard has been on the market since Wisky’s bowl game, and there hasn’t been a word from him, gives me hope that he’s our guy.

It might be Pruitt. Or it might not be. But whatever is in the works, Saban has Plans A, B, C, and D, covering all the contingencies we’ve discussed, especially around Pruitt.

BOB, I don’t know. I think he’s headed for Tampa. But regardless, we’ll have a different OC in 2023. No clue as to who.

Sounds like a position coach I'm sure it'll shake out soon.
Just thinking out loud here, but the “pitch” to Armstrong might have been “leave your DC position at USM (obviously for more money you would think) and coach ILB’s. We’re planning bringing in (X, Y or Z) as our new DC. However, we don’t expect them to be here very long as most of our guys move on to other positions in short order. Then possibly move up to DC here at some point”.

Like I said, just pure conjecture on my part.

Nothing really to worry about even if he has them. We all know he's not giving the keys to anyone...especially if he's had a few. 🍻🥃🍸🍾🚔

With Armstrong likely to coach ILB’s one would think the DC would coach safeties. Jeremy Pruitt and Leonard have experience coaching DB’s but Schumann does not. Wondering if that is telling with who might be realistically up for the job?
Which is somewhat perplexing because, if I recall correctly, CNS prefers his DC to coach the ILBs because they are setting the defense. Is that right?

I believe you’re correct. I think the only time that wasn’t the case was when Kevin Steele coached ILB and Kirby the DB’s.
