2023 RIP Thread

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

One of my favorites growing up. Always loved how the bill on his batting helmet was shorter than the other players.
They don't make em like him anymore. Didn't much care for Baltimore, but always enjoyed watching him. I think he played for them his whole career.

Russ Francis, who played for the 80s dynasty 49er teams, has been killed in a plane crash in Lake Placid, NY.

Report: Former Patriot Russ Francis killed in Lake Placid plane crash (timesunion.com)

In a cruel twist of fate, Francis was an avid skydiver who, in 1980, was scheduled as a backup if nobody showed up for a particular event. They all arrived, leaving Francis at home - and their plane crashed, killing all on board en route to a drop into Aloha Stadium before a Univ of Hawaii football game.

He was a good tight end. Always enjoyed watching him play. Plane crash is a tough way to go. But I guess they all are. RIP

Walt Garrison, who was both a Dallas Cowboy and a rodeo cowboy, dies at the age of 79. Probably best known for his smokeless tobacco ads.

Walt Garrison is probably the most famous graduate of the high school from which my son graduated (Lewisville High Fighting Farmers, Lewisville, TX).

He used to do commercials for Bill Utter Ford about a mile from my workplace.

(The more famous commercial around here, though, was Burton Gilliam - the guy in "Blazing Saddles" that challenges the slaves to do "the Camptown Races" at the start - doing car commercials that were too loud).

In high school here in NSB ('71 & '72) I had two other buddies and we all had our favs in that NFC Eastern division. Mine were the Redskins since I grew up in Virginia. The others guys had the Cowboys and the Eagles. Every Monday we'd take turns ribbing each other depending on the games went on Sunday. I remember Walt Garrison from those days.
