Screen Passes

I'm trying to remember, but it doesn't seem like we run many screens. Is this because there are so many near the line of scrimmage or what. I mean the O-line has protected pretty well in pass blocking, so I guess it's not an issue, but I'm wondering if we'll use it agains Florida, as I bet they'll be coming.

I also heard that screens are just plain difficult to execute, fyi.

I remember at least one that went no where fast. They work well if the defense is getting alot of penetration, and your lineman can get out quick. Baby steps,,, lets start with the toss sweep. :biggrin:

I'm pretty sure we ran one screen against Arkansas and I think it had some success. At the time I thought JPW was going to get sacked, the DL came through so fast. But he did a nice job of tossing the ball over their heads.

i agree, the screen pass is a great weapon against an aggressive defense. i deep imagining darby wide with only one def back to beat. or a mcclain, castille. this would be a great audible option for wilson.

Screen passes seem to always work well against our defense.

For whatever reason, we've never (at least not in recent years) been able to do much with a screen pass.........dunno why.

i can't stand the screen pass. i think they only work 10% of the time and the other 90% you give up yardage.

however, screen passes can be big yardage gainers if used at the right times. like from earlier posts, with a fast rushing defense and a quarterback who is quick on his feet and can get the ball out in the flats before the defensive line can get to him.

I love the screen. It doesnt have to be a complicated screen. I think it would be great for someone like KD so he can get a lot of confidence and use his skills in the open field.

Look at teams like ND. They run a screen a drive and move the ball quite efficiently.

notre dame = experienced quarterback

alabama = not experienced quarterback

Our wide receiver screens seem to work pretty well but the running back screens seem to not do very well in my opinion. In fact we have 3 touchdowns dating back to last year off of WR screens.

that was actually supposed to be a utah/shovel pass but the arkansas d-line got way too much penetration and kd and jpw turned it into a conventional screen pass.

Well, you do have to have a very smart an athletic OL to effectively run screens to the RB (that seems to be only partially true for Bama). We do run alot of WR screens and pull the LT into blocking lanes to spring him free (usually Andre Smith). Maybe we will get to see a few with McClain getting a little room... I would love it if it happened.

I recall A screen pass that went down to the 1 yard line for about a 25 yard gain against Auburn in the 4th qtr in 03...that remains the only successful screen play I've seen us run from 03-06 involving a running back.

We also never ran them under Fran...I think the last time we ran decent screen plays were when Shaun was here.

We do occasionally run the playaction WR screen...the play that went for a TD against Texas Tech...but, yeah, our screen plays/tight end plays have seriously been lacking since the offense was implemented. Strange for a "pro" style offense.

So you're saying you need to have an experienced QB to throw effective screen passes? :conf2: Sorry but that logic doesn't make much sense to me. Any QB can throw a screen pass.

Huh...a high percentage of our passes are downfield.
