It’s obvious that this whole NIL thing has become something other than it was intended.

The contracts are probably as varied as the sunsets.

It seems like there SHOULD be a standard used by everyone.

When I took Business Law, we learned that a valid contract consisted of consideration by both parties involved. For example, I pay you money for a service. We know that these student athletes are getting paid, but what value are they providing in return? Since you can’t pay an athlete to sign a scholarship or to play for your school, then what is going on? I haven’t seen any commercials or endorsements by any of these guys (probably has been, but obviously very rare).

There needs to be some sort of regulation of these deals.

Perhaps the NZAA needs to come up with a standardized agreement and require that these agreements are registered and provided to them. There needs to be some sort of transparency in all of this.

Another thing I am wondering is WHO is making these deals with the players? Companies, booster groups or individuals? It's obvious that the coaches are heavily involved in the offers and that is NOT supposed to be happening if the schools are supposed to be separate from the deals.

What are your thoughts?

There are two kinds of contracts. Some players have national sponsors. Like McKinstry was sponsored by Cool-Aid. (obviously) If he had moved schools three times It would not have changed his deal. But most are likely just pay to play. For those the person footing the $$$ isn't getting anything really. They drop a boat load of cash on this kid and 12 months later he's shopping around for more. THAT situation is not going to continue. Eventually the money will come with stipulations. Right now there are no stipulations what so ever.

Go look up where the Alabama NIL collective ranks among CFB and you will see why we are losing the players. We could rely on our coach alone to recruit and retain players. That is no longer the case and we are currently way behind on this aspect of recruiting and retaining players.

The only way to fix it is for the NCAA to cease to exist. Don’t see that happening anytime soon, especially if you’re one of these teams benefiting the most. They finally found an equalizer to slow down, if not stop the machine Saban built at Alabama.

This may be a bunch of random thoughts:

As many as there are that hate it, the LANK brand is how it’s supposed to work. Dr Pepper is how it’s supposed to work. I agree with a poster above, I haven’t exactly seen a slew of advertisements with college athletes in them. Or print ads…if those even exist any longer.

I wonder what Ed O’Bannon feels about how he completely changed the college game for the worst.

NIL was supposed to be about the guys who played and had their name and face out there because of their play. It was so they could make money off jersey sales, lending their face to be in ads, etc. if you wanted some of that action, then be the starter. We knew it would cause animosity between those with and those without. It’s turned into “I can’t make anything here as a backup so I’ll leave” and thus “we have to funnel money to the backups or we won’t be able to compete next year” then to “we have to pay the recruits to entice them to be here or they will go somewhere else” which results in bidding wars over immature kids who don’t know how to handle the money they are given.

As bad as I hate to say it, agbarn may have been on to something with the contractual type thing they wanted to do with scholarships a few years back. Maybe the idea of we can’t cut you and you can’t leave needs to be approached. Then on the flip side, no kid today is going to sign that.

The NCAA is absolutely toothless as an organization. They can’t and won’t do anything to correct this. The solution is for the Power 4 to pull out of the NCAA and make a new regulatory sports agency with the teeth and power to dig into a school the NCAA doesn’t have. That agency will have to put guardrails on this thing at its inception. Sadly that will be multiple years down the road after the game is so far gone it’s unrecognizable. If the NCAA had ANY inkling of cahonas, this could be fixed by Summer.

Do you realize, had Saban gone to Texas when it was rumored they were after him, they would have gone a few years in a row without dropping a game. Won several NC’s in a row and be currently sporting a roster of every 5* from every recruiting class. This has become about money and the conglomeration of boosters with oil money supporting Texas can’t be competed with if they are allowed to buy players. It’s really sad when a team has non-playing backups making more than NFL starters.

CNS will never say it but you know NIL, the portal, 12 team playoff had to play into his decision. Head coaches are spending tons of time negotiating the turbulent waters of college football rather than doing what they love most, coaching.
And most coaches are teachers at heart, that love the game. Teams are going to need CEO types to manage a roster like the NFL has. Oh wait…we got one of those now…🤦🏻‍♂️

I hate it. Everything about it reeks and it will ruin the game. Full stop, as the kids say.
Those of us who have been around awhile know how good the sport was at one time. I’m all for things to improve the sport but on the flip side there are things that hurt it. Consumers have a right to a good product but when the product is subpar then the consumers have to make a decision about what they are willing to tolerate…to support the product or not support the product. We the people have that power and don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t.

Where does it rank?

I fail to see where fans have any power in this situation.
