I don’t think it is losing players that has people upset- it is losing a chunk of our starters and star players. These aren’t the 3rd string guys bailing. It’s the guys who would be all over the field next year, and our future Heisman level QB. I’m not saying we can’t win next year. But we are currently going from having all the pieces to compete to having to completely rebuild. It’s frustrating as all heck.
It is frustrating- but change brings change. No one knew how far it would go, and certainly no one wanted it to go this far. There should never be only one reason for making such a monumental decision as to who’s scholarship/money you want to accept to play college football. It’s widely reported by many parents (truthfully or not) that the kid is making the choice, not them; a 17-18 (sometimes 16) year old kid.
As a coach, as a fan ( I would think as a teammate) you want players who want to be there for the right “reasons”. I would say we see a perfect example of both sides, I think, in Michigan and Alabama this year. We now have evidence from the portal.
More often than not, I’d pick the team with the players who are committed to each other to come out on top.
I think (hope) we’ll be pleasantly surprised next season. I’d bet on it in year two.

Don't think Smart would have made a bit of a difference. IMO, he is a good HC, but one of the more overrated coaches in the country. He has no imagination, what is he going to do now that CNS is gone? Can't ape his adaptations or take advantage of CNS' player or assistant evaluations. (In fact, he's stuck with TRob now - he, he. Mike Bobo - sounds like a late-career CNS hire.) Kirby is as focused and ruthless as Saban, but that's where the comparison ends, IMO. He's gotten a good head start, but his free ride in terms of SEC schedule is now over.

Assuming CKD and staff can figure out a way to stop UGA's power running game, assuming that Bobo/Smart have enough sense to use it, CKD will out-coach CKS probably every time they play. UGA may win, but it will be because of overwhelming talent.

I can't believe the number of fans and analysts who have such high regard for Smart. He's a good coach, but hardly elite. The primary reason for his success is that he trips over 4 HS AAs when he walks out of his back door every morning. If your team can complete the forward pass and get a few stops, he's in trouble.

And Sarkisian is a very good OC, but just a meh HC - his first 8 years 7,6,6,6,4,4,7,5 losses. Then this year. But he will do well with Saban's old staff and the trillions he has at his disposal now that money means more than ever. CKD beat him in each of the last 2 years with less than half of the raw talent.
Nobody would have made much of a difference, IMO. Change brings change, and now (big) money is involved.

It’s not one high school kid. It’s half of our 5 and 4 stars players. This wasn’t handled the right way. I don’t know who’s to blame but this is not going to be good for Bama and the immediate future and possibly long term if the coaches don’t work out.
How should it have been handled? There is no time for a valuable employee to leave.

Here's why - it's about Alabama, not Saban.

"Every coach that’s coached at Alabama in the past 100yrs has increased their winning percentage coaching at Alabama. Bryant 20 percent and Saban 20 percent better also., Coach Gene Stallings won 70 games and seven years in Tuscaloosa." (via Paul Combs)

Alabama will be fine.
Exactly. Every coach since Bear has won at least 10 games once. We are going to take an initial hit but will be good.

CNS first year coaching record was, as we all know, 7-6. Kirby’s first year was 8-5. Why are so many readying their pitchforks out if CKD has more than two losses. As Aaron Rodger’s said relax

My argument is we need our BoT, President, alumni, boosters, and fans need to understand you have to continue to work on the program so that you attract top flight coaches. We went through some eras where we didn't do that.

Mal Moore wrote in his book how bad things had gotten within the AD when he launched Crimson Tradition. Even still he and Battle would be considered old-school ADs even by the standards of their time. You cannot run AD that way anymore. So I would say that Byrne is the first AD we have had that the role wasn't too big for and is forward thinking and innovative.

Think about that for a minute... Im missing some people. Bryant was AD and full-time HC, Steve Sloan former player who launched Tide Pride, Hootie Ingram former player who got us on probation, that dofus who caved to fan pressure and hired Dubose, Mal Moore former player coach who simply loved Alabama, and Battle former player and retired businessman lured out of retirement.

When you look at from this viewpoint we have been incredibly fortunate lucky even that we have lured coaches as well as we have with the people in charge of making the decisions. We can't expect to be this fortunate or lucky in the future. We are gonna have to figure out how to pay to play...

Let’s not pretend that the situation Saban inherited in 2007 is in any way comparable to what DeBoer is inheriting now. If DeBoer went 7-6 next year, all hell would break loose. And rightfully so.

Well, bless your heart!
