Spring Practice Thread/News/Predictions

Reactions to that vid:

Good news: KP catches it! Jalen actually threw a pass over the middle with tight coverage, which is something he rarely attempted last year (trying to give credit where credit is due!).

Bad news: It was a terribly inaccurate pass that would be an incomplete pass about 99% of the time and an INT about 50% of the time. It also put KP in a terrible position to get a big hit. Bad news for JM too because even if he threw 50 more passes in this practice that were on target, this pass just simply is a bad reminder of the kind of inaccurate passes we've grown accustomed to him throwing and it reinforces the idea that it's hard to change the stripes on a zebra.

To be fair. It would have been a sack in a real game. Part of the reason it was inaccurate is because he had to throw off his back foot. That doesn't make it a good throw or absolve Milroe. It's just part of the picture

Because of his black jersey?

I can see the point, but I've never understood why these QB's don't step up in the pocket and step into these throws in practice because they know they can't get hit. You'd think that's part of the "no contact" rule of the black jersey to help them learn to go thru their pocket movements and use their footwork in traffic that they'll later need in games when they will receive contact.

But JM's footwork problems are really the start of his inaccuracies. Former QB and ESPN color commentator Jordan Rodgers has spoken about this very often.

Hard to get a good screenshot but Lawson is essentially walking up to Milroe but still gets close enough that I'm not sure he could have stepped into it. It's hard to tell from the camera angle exactly where Lawson is in relation to Milroe. Maybe he should have anyway knowing he can't get hit idk. But in a real game Lawson is going full speed not walking and probably gets a sack or at least the play becomes quite different

Me. I'm hoping that.

I saw enough last year.
I respect your honesty and your have the right to say that.

However, football players change over their careers. The window for that change is rapidly shrinking with NIL and the portal but even in JM's case he could theoretically make some big changes (that almost all of us agree he needs to make) to suddenly burst on the scene to being a very explosive QB.

I'm willing to wait and see if he can make the necessary changes. I'm not sure what a solid QB coach would estimate the odds of his changing to become that type of QB from year 3 to year 4 (I'd be shocked if the odds are greater than 50%) but in the words of the famous philosopher from Dumb and Dumber "so you are telling me there's a chance" I think it's worth it to "wait and see." If JM can beat those odds and become a complete QB by using his arm and legs he not only becomes a top 5 draft pick but possibly a Bama legend.

FWIW, if JM can't do it I certainly hope Ty, Mack or Dylan can.

Fwiw a famous insider has said Milroe has had a good spring. He's apparently been good in the passing game made good decisions.

But that same person also said Ty has had a really impressive spring. Ty seems to have "made a lot of progress" and was sharp in the 1st scrimmage with some "outstanding" throws.

And then I think I shared before apparently Mack has really flashed and looks to have a bright future. Big with a big arm and ability to throw on the run

Apparently there has not been a ton of information on Lonergan.

Edit: probably should have put this in the QB thread but honestly can't tell the difference between the 2 threads half the time 😂

That's a good report. I love hearing the QBs are all making improvements. Just what we NEED/WANT to hear at this juncture.

ANY quarterback who is making a lot of progress is a good thing for Alabama. I would love to have multiple QB's making significant progress because we are one play away from the backup becoming the full time starter. It's tackle football.

One difference I've noticed in the comments from DeBoer and the new coaching staff this spring is that the message seems to be all positive, all the time. Could it be too positive? I remember Saban always used to talk a bit about the areas where he was displeased, perhaps as a way to motivate players to do better. Hard to say at this point whether this positive attitude all the time is a good or bad thing.

Might just be a case of different styles. Players are different now than when saban was in his prime as a coach. Neither way may be better than the other. It just might suit Dabeor better to go that route with the media.

FWIW, Dabeor’s positivity hasn’t stopped him from winning at any other place he has coached.

It's how many younger coaches feel they need to be to effectively engage with today's athletes. Saban's "way" was only good because he produced NC's, so today's players would tolerate it. But take away the titles and his style wouldn't work in today's world.

Dig that but one thing is for sure...after a starter is named in the Fall then Mack will probably be the backup with the other two in the portal. Too much money and teams needing QBs out there for all these studs to remain on the roster in this day and age.

One thing I am not worried about is CKD and staff being too positive. After this coaching change we need all the positivity that we can get around here. Not only that, Coach has a pretty dang good track record in coaching so I think we are in pretty good hands.

The coaches mention making progress a lot. And how the players have been great making corrections. So there's been down times with mistakes.

I think Ty will stay if he's QB2. Then he'll be ready to take the reins in 2025 (if not during the 2024 season)
