WKU wrap-up: New Regime, Same Old Domination
by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief

Maybe we should all learn to expect the unexpected.

By the time Alabama had snapped the ball for the third time Saturday night, the following events had occurred: Western Kentucky’s headsets had failed (twice), necessitating Alabama to relocate new playcaller Nick Sheridan from the booth to the sideline (and then back again). Left tackle Kadyn Proctor had injured a shoulder in warmups and couldn’t play. Two other offensive linemen, Tyler Booker and Parker Brailsford, had lost helmets on the same play and had to come out of the game, meaning that Alabama played seven different offensive linemen over three snaps, with an eighth lineman (Proctor) watching from the sidelines in street clothes. This coming after the remnants of a wannabe tropical system had dumped rain on Bryant-Denny Stadium for a couple of hours and made a general mess of DeBoer’s first pregame.

Thanks, Jess excellent observations. I love the fact that so many players got some playing time, I believe it will pay dividends as the season progresses. I also believe that seeing so many 2’s and 3’s and walk-ons getting PT will go a long way in locker room morale and team unity. Good win.

I enjoyed seeing so many players get involved in the game. I think we see more of the same against South Florida. I was impressed with the freshmen in the secondary. They looked seasoned. And they'll only get better. Red Morgan had the one Pi call, but otherwise played great. This game went a long way towards getting the offense fine tuned. I thought Pritchett did great at left tackle when Proctor couldn't play. After a couple early hiccups, the offense did great. It's hard to find weakness.

I think our DLine depth will pay great dividends as the season moves along. It was awesome to see explosion in the run game again.

Bravo! Thanks for noting the drop off in penalties after the first quarter. We were up in arms about that over on the game thread😆. Remains to be seen how CKD and the boys will deal with stiffer competition but the early returns are promising.

Jess, great summary. I would like to add unless it was mentioned in the game thread or post game posts, but the play of Lawson and Campbell may be the best performance I have ever seen in a season opener or Bama game in a long time! Suffice to say, the two are probably the best inside backer tandem in the country.
I don't like that Lawson changed his number to "0". It just doesn't look right on him. But he played lights out.

Great write-up Jess as usual. I'm going to have to watch the game again to look at the offense. You seem to have a different observation than I did, and you're the one that's probably right. It just seemed the offense was out sync most of the game outside of the obvious big plays. But I'll rewatch it minus the emotion this time around. Lol

Defense- Looked more than promising. It seems playing 5 DB's in coverage creates more int opportunities and makes passes harder to complete down the field with that many DB's. Playing as many players as we did no doubt develops depth but also should help in recruiting. As you pointed out, one of Sabans few flaws was giving playing time down the depth chart. Hopefully we can tell defensive recruits they aren't going to come and sit.

I agree. I felt our offense was opportunistic. Takeaway the explosive plays, I really dont remember a 10-12 play drive for a score.

It's hard to complain about the domination of 63-0, but the lack of drives and a few 3 and outs were my only complaints.

What do you guys want? Runners to go out of bounds so we can run more plays? Give me a break...
For the first time in a couple years I actually want to go back and watch the game. Very enjoyable because even with the long drives I felt like we were tinkering with things like you and someone else brought up. Building depth when the game still matters and not in the 4th quarter.
