Hey, we're getting new power poles! (y)

Much bigger than the old ones...which is always good when you're in a state that gets hit by so many hurricanes!

Right now they are just setting the poles. I assume they will then transfer the lines over and then remove the old ones.

This is looking North on North Atlantic Ave....the properties to the right are oceanfront.

Wonder why they don't use concrete like in Europe. Matter of cost?

Good question - I'll try and find out. Do the concrete versions have any rebar in them? If so over time corrosion might be an issue, given the proximity to the coast.

Otherwise it's probably cost like you hypothesized......

If the whistleblower needs a job it seems like he would be a great investigative reporter. With his connections in the State government, I bet he could find all sorts of DeSantis misbehavior.
It sounds like just one guy was able to save the pristine state parks from commercial development by taking it public.

Agree. Firing a whistleblower is opening a can of worms. Something's not right.
You're right. Some bureaucrat did a really stupid thing.

"Promote" the whistleblower out of all responsibilities. Sit him at a desk with a sporty title and zero responsibility. Continue to pay his old salary plus a 20% bump for the "promotion." Make up some goals like showing up every day, cultivating worthwhile relationships with colleagues, etc., and mark him Meets Expectations in his reviews. Be sure he has all the internet access he's always had.

He'll pull his hair out with boredom. And there's about a 100% chance he'll violate internet policies trying to fill in the time. Voila...cause for dismissal.

Yeah, you pay a bit of salary and benefits for a while. But it beats the pants off tons of adverse publicity, a bunch of legal fees (your own and the employee's) ending in a big judgment, and after a while you end up with what you want. It's a screaming bargain.

Patience, Grasshopper.

They don't have rebar as such; poles like that are "spun" concrete--concrete is placed in a mold, which is then spun to distribute the concrete, leaving a hollow core. Some sort of wire/cable is tensioned within the concrete to distribute tensile/flexural forces, which concrete on its own doesn't handle very well (they call this "pre-stressing"). The cable can be steel, treated to prevent corrosion, but they've also started to use carbon-fiber for the cable to avoid corrosion completely, though that can't be cheap.
