This issue has been coming up more and more lately, mostly on the Non-Sports Politics and Religion (NSPR) board. In a totally unrelated incident, there's another poster serving a long sentence for a personal attack over there.

This new one was on the Football board.

A long-time poster has just been suspended for a material amount of time for a personal attack on another poster. Compounding the personal attack, the characterization was sexual in nature.

There's no problem if you disagree with the other poster. Disagree all you want. Just post your opposing logic without the personal attack.

If it's your first post, you just acknowledged the board rules and get no cover. If it's your 50,000th post dating back 20+ years, you get no cover because you already know the rules.

One way or another, this garbage will stop. You choose the way.

Weird it happened on the football board. Aren’t we all on the same side here?
When faced with a different point of view on any topic whatsoever, some people perceive a personal slight and react at a personal level.

Mix in a stressful environment and alcohol, and they no longer resist expressing amplified emotions.

That tends to be a bad combination in a lot of situations, period. If this happened last night, I'd say all of us were...a little stressed and emotional.

I think it's unfortunately become a part of the culture of discourse over the past 10 -15 years where we have become extremist in our daily relations and it's even modeled by our leaders. A sad reflection on our society.
Equally unfortunately, I agree with everything you said here, Slowpoke.

Here, though, that doesn't matter. Outside of my own personal interactions and as it relates to my duties as a moderator on TideFans, I don't much care about the general public's level of discourse.

People can comport themselves elsewhere as they wish.

On TideFans, and so long as BamaNation allows me a say in the matter, we will not be in the business of condoning personal attacks as a response to simple differences in perspective.

That is probably true. It's not a justification for personal attacks.

Similar logical processes on a far more serious level: "Judge, I'm really sorry her jaw got in the way of my fist. But somebody overserved me, and she made me mad....that makes it all good, right? Cut a brother some slack....please?!?"

As Ricky Bobby said, "I said with all due respect. That means I can say whatever I want !"

@4Q Basket Case if you don't mind I'd like to piggyback off of your post (because it relates) and also say there doesnt need to be anymore threads started for the purpose of"calling out" someone or a group of people who disagreed with "you" and now "you're" on a vindication tour. It's a waste of bandwidth and turns into nothing more than personal attacks.

Over the years here I’ve tried not to be argumentative, with the rare exception being a football official from the Hoosier state basically telling most of the people posting here they “didn’t know football like he knew football”. 😉

And it is the reason I’ve stayed off NS board. I have my opinions but I don’t have any desire to attempt to “shove my point of view down others throat”. Just like bellybuttons and other body parts, we all have them. And just because we do, doesn’t necessarily mean you have to “show them” because you want to prove yours is “better”.

IMO ask yourself “why do you come here?”. I do not just because I love sports, but in particular I love sports of the University of Alabama. It’s because I LIKE the members here. Above, I find it FUN and ENJOYABLE. And nothing sucks the life out of it like folks being petty and immature.

Today is my last day of full time work. I’ll continue to do some part time work but for the most part, the remaining time is for me and my family. Over those 45+ years, I spent far too much time with those that were “often wrong but never in doubt”. This board has been some what of escape from that for me over the years.

Kind of dovetailing on what @crimsonaudio said earlier, I think we all need to, before we hit that post button, revisit what we are about to post. Very much like that work email, are you being direct or being terse and condescending? Are looking for a discussion or are you spoiling for a fight? Am I looking to have a discussion or, as the late great Mike Leach would say, are you trying to prove how “great and smart you are? (no offense intended to “fat little girlfriends).

I’m not saying we can’t disagree. We CAN disagree with each other without being disagreeable. And we can do it without making it a personal attack.

Congratulations on your retirement! I retired a bit over 5 years ago and have enjoyed every second of it.

I miss some (a few) of the people I used to work with. I don't miss the large corporate politics, the agendas, the red tape, the people working to look good rather than be good, the bad incentive plans that led to behavior not in the best interest of the shareholders, etc., etc., etc.

The single best little thing about retirement is no alarm clock. We set an alarm on only those mornings that we have to leave early for a flight -- usually to someplace we have been looking forward to.

The best big thing is that you can spend time doing what you want to do.

My suggestion would be to do nothing for 3 - 6 months. Then something you like to do that forces intellectual engagement and gets you out from in front of the TV. For me, it's wine. I work 10 hours a week in a really nice wine shop and teach classes that attempt to de-mystify and de-snobbify wine.

For you, it might be golf, fishing, painting, gardening, cooking, whatever. It really doesn't matter much what the activity is, so long as there is one and you like to do it.

Enjoy the time.....you've earned it!

Two things here. First, I just don't understand some fans. My wife included, unfortunately. The GOAT is gone. New HC & staff. Roster gutted by grads, NFL & Portal. New system. Uphill climb, swimming upstream.
Secondly, HOW MANY times do we have to watch one team build a huge lead in the first half only to watch the opponent come roaring back in the second half! A rhetorical question. I kept saying at the half, "I've seen this before, we better be ready to hold on for dear life." i could add more but I will just stop here. Roll Tide. Boomer Sooner  PS. There is a reason I don't post on the game thread. I can't handle the negativity.
